So um, Bourbon thread? Yeah, Bourbon Thread.

Sounds like something that sits on the shelf of the bar gathering dust, but I get it.
It’s tasty. I’ve definitely gotten more interested in the odd liqueur options out there than bourbon. I still mostly drink bourbon but I’ve got too much already to spend time finding more.

From Death and Co in Denver:

Circuit Breaker

1 fl oz Mezcal Vago Elote
1/2 fl oz Charanda (Sub options: aged rhum agricole or a split of blanc agricole and aged spanish-style rum)
1/2 fl oz Corn Liqueur (Nixta)
1/4 fl oz Cynar
1 dash Angostura Bitters
1 twist Orange

Ice: single large cube

1. Pre-chill glass.
2. Stir with ice and strain.
3. Express orange twist and add as garnish.

An old fashioned variant:

North American

1 1/2 fl oz Rye
3/4 fl oz Corn Liqueur
1/2 fl oz Chili Liqueur
1/3 fl oz Maple Syrup
1 dash Orange Bitters
1 drop Saline Solution

Stir with ice and strain into a rocks glass with one large ice cube.

And a sour:

Blaze and Maize

3/4 fl oz Mezcal Joven
3/4 fl oz Ancho Reyes Verde Chile Poblano Liqueur
3/4 fl oz Corn Liqueur
3/4 fl oz Lime Juice

Shake with ice and strain into a coupe.

I’m normally a neat or rocks guy, but the old fashioned variants look interesting.

@cwessel76 has a good old fashioned recipe. Not sure how original it is but it's my go to.

Not sure I’ve ever had the original old fashioned recipe, but most I have are some level of drinkable. I’ve had a few variations some friends found or made up and they’re all generally pretty good.

My typical struggle (if there is one) is giving up drinking a good bourbon straight to drink an old fashioned.

My favorite OFs typically use Elijah Craig but anything over $40-50 a bottle is just a waste like you said.
