Lettuce discuss USCjr

One of the things that I have had discussions with @Yolo Bomb about is how Rhule almost always has a positive outlook on any player.
We know he does that in public. There's a good reason for it. Do we know that he talks that way in private with ACs?

It's hard to get as far as Rhule has practicing self-deception.

I doubt they made the pick on the basis of a recommendations. That's very unlike Rhule. I'm sure he also watched his film and looked at the analysis of his statistics. I'd be surprised if he didn't know what he was getting in terms of ability to read defenses. The thing he couldn't have predicted is the massive regression to freshman year in turnovers.
I'm sure they watched film, that would be the dumbest thing ever if they didn't. I guess my point is, who on earth was telling him Sims was an NFL talent?

I don't know if that's the case, more than likely not. But it's all based off the same stuff for the most part. I'm quite certain SC had more options at WR last year than we do in 2023 so it absolutely looks different.

I guess where I'm going with this one is I don't remember there being a lot of undercenter option or 22 personnel stuff last year. Haarberg (and Sims) are running a lot more than Rattler ever did. Some of that is personnel, but Rhule's vision on offense clearly has us leaning in a manball direction. Shit, what seems like our identity run/play (duo) is the same Langsdorf tried to lean on.

For those that don't like the play calling....what don't you like? Would you like to throw more with these QB's? Less running game with the QB?
I'm writing about this for my recap, but two things I was going into:

1) Our QBs needing to lead our team in rushing 3 of 4 games is a really bad spot to be in. But we can't run with just the RBs alone. I don't think Satterfield can do anything different, I just don't like that's how it has to be.

2) The first play of the game was a perfect description of what our issues are. LA Tech was awful at giving up deep passes so we tried a deep bomb to start the game with 7 players staying in protection. We tried to get a deep ball on film for Michigan, but what we ended up doing is showing how bad we are in pass protection starting the game with a sack allowed. Hindsight don't do that, but I get why he called the play.

Depends how you interpret NFL talent. Is there anything physically that says he's not capable of playing in the NFL? Accuracy maybe? His mistakes throwing haven't been because he didn't throw it where he meant to throw it. It's because he shouldn't have thrown it there at all.

He didn't say he's an NFL ready QB. Lots of QB's that have the physical tools to be in the NFL. Not many with the ability to read defenses and make the right throws.

Optimistically speaking is he capable of learning? Unlikely at this point for sure but possible? CJ Stroud is among the dumbest humans on the planet and he's done quite well playing football.

Think it was just coach speak to hopefully boost his confidence.

when you read draft site scouting reports on the internet - not the best source - accuracy is not the issue. Most guys say he can throw a bullet accurately to a spot. It is completely reading defenses and making progressions.

Most of these sites have him in the high 20's for class of 2025 QBs. I think the most QBs drafted in the last ten years was 15, so no way he will be drafted. Remote NFL chance.

Yeah that's kind of my point. It sucks that our offense sucks, particularly at the forward pass, I just don't know what he could do differently with the players they have.

Everyone clamoring for the more athletic backup receivers. I'd like to see more of them too for experience purposes but the last thing you want to do with QB's that aren't very good at passing is put in receivers that don't run the correct routes, run them not quite right, etc.

Even quick slants can be disastrous plays if the receiver fucks it up.

I'd start with 8 turnovers in 2 games compared to us now only having 1 in 2 games and work back from there. You can't give the ball over at the highest rate of any player to start the season and somehow increase the amount of times you give the ball over the first two games. No NFL team will come close to wanting you on the team.

Ya. They can't just hand off to the RB. We basically have to establish QB run to open up our RBs which is opposite of how good running teams do it. Sims has better completion percentage currently than HH so there's also that if we move forward with HH moving forward.

There was a piece that came out where Rhule said..... He doesn't want to hear from his ACs what a player cant be unless it is an offseason evaluation meeting IIRC.

Sims is vastly more accurate than HH over ten yards, and I can't tell if HH can read the defenses any better.

HH season to date. If Kemp and Fidone get jammed we probably have no passing game

that's a little different - he is simply saying not to say a player is incapable of learning how to do something. It's a different matter to say they are not doing it now.

We are fucked regardless. Rhule won’t fire Satt at the end of the year and hopefully Raiolas contract doesn’t get renewed either. We should’ve got John Garrison while he was available.
No ties to Rhule= no hire.

Absolutely true - he wants guys who will do things the way he wants. He doesn't want to hire guys who have a ton of experience and decide they need go do it their way.

I understand - he needs everyone going the same direction to build a culture.

He's done a pretty good job of developing coaches, too.

I think sometimes you have to go outside your comfort zone. Even Tom Osborne did it. The only two hires I’m really concerned about are Raiola and Satterfield. I do think the line has looked a little better, but I don’t know if he is the answer.

We need to have something developed in the passing game. You get Grant to 20 carries, Haarberg to 15, you RB committee for 5 more and then do you go to a jet sweep/reverse series for 3 or so?

Problem is that is only 43 plays. You are looking at 65/70 snaps a game.

Would be nice to get a quick passing game going with Fidone on Sticks, spacing, etc... concepts. He seems like the guy Haarberg has the most confidence in throwing the ball to.

Need to develop some sort of passing game or it is going to be a long 8 games.

They had some reasonably good looks on PA bootleg stuff this week. Haarberg didn't get it out most of the opportunities though.

But that concept has almost put Haarberg in the ICU twice in 2 weeks because we fuck up blocks doe.
