2022 Nebraska HC Board

He would consider a bigger financial offer, but would it be enough where he would use that as leverage. I think LSU goes after him and he takes it. We'll see though.

I’ve heard Mel Tucker more than Dave Aranda for LSU, but my point is that Nebraska will still be a top 15 job financially (based on what we pay Frost), with greater resources and a cushy conference spot than many other schools. There’s a lot to like about it as a job objectively.

I mean, there are only a few schools that you would consider that are the elite schools that are the final stepping stones. Alabama, USC, Ohio State, and maybe Texas. Every other school is technically a stepping stone to another opportunity, mainly the NFL.

With that said, I also feel like it's a double edge sword on who we hire. We may hire a good coach who is very honest, loyal, and modest who views Nebraska as their elite school. But then we may a good coach who will bolt at the first NFL or school-like USC when they get Nebraska rolling.

I'm really not worried at this point. Let's get someone who has a good track record of producing good teams with chances at years with a great chance.

This year showed that Clemson can be down. This year showed that OU can have its shaky moments. This year showed us that the top of the SEC will not always be Alabama. So let's find a coach that is going to keep us in that wheel when those other teams have their down years so we can leap on those opportunities. And if that leads us to a situation where that coach bails on us, then at least we had opportunities where we're on top.
What happens if that coach then bolts? I obviously know what happens but dammit if we aren't in another search in 3-4 years hoping for luck.

When the top guys like #2ndChoice, Kiffin, Aranda, Campbell, O’Brien likely turn us down and we’re evaluating our 2nd tier candidates where does Tom Herman fit in on that list? To me he’s a solid candidate that would be an intriguing interview if I’m Turd. He’s currently just a quality control coach on the Chicago Bears, so he’s someone that you could gauge interest with immediately.

He’s obviously not a hot commodity right now but he’s had success as a HC at a high profile program, is known as a top notch recruiter, has coached in the B1G, and you know he’d bring in the best staff possible. He checks a lot of boxes for me and I feel like he got pushed out at UT because of the political rift with the administration over the stupid “The Eyes of Texas” song plus his record over OU didn’t help. Either way a raw deal imo.
Vodka Tom? No thanks, already hearing enough rumors about our current coaches and drinking. Lots of smoke about Tom and his booze causing him issues in many aspects of his life. Even that whack job WR coach from Ohio St who was fired came out with all kinds of drinking/strip joint stories about Vodka Tom. Not what we need.

Welcome to the new dynamic of being a coach/fan in the 2020 era. Husker Fans complain about our turnover at coaching but if they did their research they would realize that our turnover of coaches since TO left is actually below average. If a coach is bolting in 3-4 years for another job that means he has done a good job for us. Then we bring in another coach to build on his success.

Also you structure the contracts so they have large Buy Outs so the university can make some coin if a coach bolts. It's just the way that the college coaching business is done these days. Gotta adapt with the times, which for many Husker Fans acceptance of change does not come easily for them. We are far from the most progressive fanbase.

You don’t think he’ll get a better offer with equal money but better recruiting base? The Nebraska name just doesn’t carry any weight anymore. Now when Nebraska knocks on the door it is closer to a call from KSU than from even Texas
It bothers me to see people hold Nebraska in such low esteem. It's a great college to coach at. Amazing fan support, top notch facilities coming, financially stable Athletic Department, tradition......... All I need to do to remind myself of the Debbie Downer Husker Fans is to think about our basketball program. Tim Miles was floundering mightily and the low self esteem Husker Fans didn't want to see him fired because "Who could we hire that is better? or no good coach will want to come here.". They were happy with a 500 coach because they didn't think we deserved better. I literally got ridiculed and mocked for mentioning that we should hire Fred Hoiberg. We are the only Power5 basketball program to never win an NCAA Tournament basketball game, and we got the hottest coach that was available. Zero tradition of winning anything in basketball. Yet you listen to Fred talk and he holds what Nebraska has to offer in high esteem. Fan support, conference, facilities, game atmosphere......... listen to how Fred speaks about our program and what we have to offer. He is proud of what Nebraska has to offer, and it shows. Fred also bitch slapped every Husker Fan who used the Urban Myth of "You Can't Recruit To Nebraska" as a crutch. Bill Callahan also laughed at the Husker Fans who use "You Can't Recruit to Nebraska" as an excuse.

In this thread we have:

Why would Dave Aranda leave Baylor to come here?

And

If we hire anyone they're potentially going to get poached within the first 3 years.

Either jobs are stickier than we imagine or anyone can be moved at any time, I'm going to go ahead and reject the idea that Baylor, Kentucky, Cockeye State, Cincinnati, can stave off quality challengers better than we could.

A friend of mine’s client is Lanning’s brother. Lanning isn’t leaving for anything but an SEC job. Cross him off.

We can attract a top candidate. We are going to need some serious money to be able to do that though. We’ve got it, but this is certainly gonna set us back. You’re talking about $22 ish million before you even talk about the other guy’s buyout. Which is what makes a guy like Lane Kiffin attractive as he doesn’t have a buyout currently.

Turd Alberts has made three hires for two of his bigger programs at UNO. All three guys were big time high profile guys, two of which were not coaching at the time that they were hired in Blaise and Warming. Mims was arguably the top assistant in his sport akin to a Brent Venables type. Point being is that while Turd hasn’t done it here, he’s done extremely well with every opportunity he’s been given previously.

Easier to get the next coach when your team has a better winning record as well as your coaches contract getting bought out by another school.

Okay well that's fine then put me in the camp of not liking the constant turnover. I hate progressivism. I believe in consistency when things are done correctly with positive results. Obviously that doesn't describe Frost like I hoped it would. But that doesn't mean the next coach has to fall into "the business of college football" with turnover. If you have the right guy for right now, and he wins, you shouldn't have to worry about that. And if it is a factor, then I'm out on the hire. Simple as that.

I don’t think he is a bad coach but there may be a riot in Nebraska if he was named coach
I know a lot of Nebraska fans have been out of touch with reality for awhile but I hope for the sake of what we’ve become over last 5-7 years everyone has/starts to realize we aren’t attracting the hottest up-and-coming coaches every time we have a vacancy. We never really actually have, with the exception of Frost only because of his ties to the state.

Shit, it’s gonna hard enough to snag a coach that has a average track record at an established P5 program. I find it highly unlikely that anyone in our 1st tier of candidates would actually consider NU, probably just use us as leverage at their current position.

I’ll be supportive of any new hire but I’m of the opinion that NU isn’t a place for a head coach to be cutting his teeth at the P5 level.

Okay but there's zero evidence the next guy will succeed here in the first place. We're basically 0/4 now. Not good.

Well you put your faith in Turd that he can hire someone worth a shit (ie. Lane Kiffin).

Exactly

When programs are floundering - AD's are brought in to evaluate and make moves. I thought this one would be different in that it would be providing a leader/mentor of our young HC that had a Ranch Hand leading the Athletic program prior - but history doesn't lie.

If those rumors are true I totally agree but I’m definitely not taking Zach Smiths’ or prominent Texas boosters rumors as gospel. Both had agendas. Plus if it were true it’s an interesting move by Texas to jump all in on a new coach with the same exact problems, but were actually publicly known. It’d be a bad look on the administration.

Regardless you’re probably right Tom Herman to Nebraska probably isn’t ever happening.
