2022 Nebraska HC Board

I mean fill in the blank with the coach you like, that's not the point. I'm sure you'd prefer Monken lol
Honestly not Monken the "name" if that makes sense, but that offense, that discipline with a little more variety to it, yes. Nah if we're going to do this then I want an established name that has a commitment here that I don't have to google to figure out who he is or where he's from.

I know a lot of Nebraska fans have been out of touch with reality for awhile but I hope for the sake of what we’ve become over last 5-7 years everyone has/starts to realize we aren’t attracting the hottest up-and-coming coaches every time we have a vacancy. We never really actually have, with the exception of Frost only because of his ties to the state.

Shit, it’s gonna hard enough to snag a coach that has a average track record at an established P5 program. I find it highly unlikely that anyone in our 1st tier of candidates would actually consider NU, probably just use us as leverage at their current position.

I’ll be supportive of any new hire but I’m of the opinion that NU isn’t a place for a head coach to be cutting his teeth at the P5 level.
Yep--this is what made Frost an especially modern Nebraska situation. If Frost doesn't have NU ties at the time he's getting called up to the majors, he's going to do FSU, Oregon, Florida, and probably Tennessee over NU. That's not to say that people aren't interested in NU. If we had all of the back channel convo detail, we could probably glean a lot about the kind of coach who wants to coach at NU b/c there have been inbounds in each cycle. We're just not going to go toe to toe with LSU and USC and get the number one guy. Few schools can.

My pick is still Chadwell. Took Charleston Southern to their first playoff appearing ever. Moglia hires him b/c he said their offense has the hardest he had to play when CCU was FCS. Now CCU is a top 25 team. CCU is still a bottom tier school talent wise in the Sun Belt and they may be at the bottom of that list. We've also already started building in elements of CCU's playbook, so helpful transition point there.

Again, you're comparing Turd to Eichorst, whether you realize it or not. Probably deserves a bit more benefit of the doubt imo.

I guess. Maybe we can hope Lane can run the same offense that isn't worth a damn now, but has success with a different voice. Meh
It's a top 20 YPP offense. I don't know that I've ever seen an offense that generally grades out highly from all the stat heads, but most fans drag.

I
Do you really think it's offensive style and not JV level coaching and QB talent identification the is the problem?
I think it's all of that combined. I don't honestly know what makes someone qualified to coach at this level compared to not qualified until after the fact. I think Frost can coach at this level but I think at this point he's too stubborn or just simply too late to make all the adjustments needed.

No, I don't think Frost's offense can work in the Big 10. I think on paper, his vision looked great. Spread/speed mixed with Husker Power running game. Based on results, not how it's turned out at all. I think it's soft, and based on where the program is at right now, I don't think he can attract the speed to make his spread work.

QB: I think Adrian is talented enough for 7-5/8-4 every year, but isn't mentally able to do it. So that's a fail on QB eval. Jury is out on Smothers and Heinrich and Luke was a massive fail as well.

Not trying to. After a half lifetime of failed football and HC hires, my faith is just minimal at this point.

Chadwell has never coached at this level and likely has very limited connections in major college football. He's honestly more of an OC candidate than he is a head coach candidate

It's all spread, just different voices describing it. Has produced essentially nothing important for 15 years.

That Coastal Carolina offense is so much fun. They have done an awesome job there. I think Cutcliffe gets moved out of Duke and they look to hire Jamey Chadwell. And that would be a really smart move by Duke. I think hiring Jamey Chadwell would be a disaster at Nebraska. He has zero ties to the Big 10 and midwest. Zero experience in the power 5. Coastal Carolina is literally the biggest school he's ever coached at.

In no real order....
  • Gus Malzahn - was a winner at Auburn. Experienced. From high pressure atmosphere. He actually would be one of the ones I think the highest of that might actually be realistic.
    • College Football Reaction GIF by SEC Network
  • Lane Kiffin
    • lane-kiffin-ole-miss.gif
  • Matt Rhule - no clue, but rumors are that he is looking at getting back to college. If he wants to we would be one of the few jobs that would be able to get him that doesn't have their guy. I think it would be between us and TCU.
    • North Carolina Shrug GIF by Carolina Panthers
  • Luke Fickel
    • College Football GIF by Cincinnati Bearcats
  • Other names I wouldn't hate... Moorehead, Narduzi, Joe Brady, Chris Peterson, Hugh Freeze
  • I get Bill O'Brien, but I don't see it.
  • For some reason Campbell doesn't do it for me. I don't know how he would handle being in the fish bowl here. He hasn't ever beat Cockeye.
  • The one idea that I could see is promoting Chins and blowing up the offensive side. Pretty much the only coach I would keep on the offensive side would be Beckton. Promote him and make him WR/TE coach. Go hire a new OC, either make Busch a defensive coach or your special team coordinator. Hire a DC that handles it and work on instilling the culture he has built on the defense to the team.

This offense is very good (Top 30) at moving the ball. It doesn't matter if you look at yards, YPP, red zone trips per game (I think they are 14th iirc), etc.... But where they struggle is when you are looking at points per red zone trip. Part of it is kicking, but they aren't even top 60 in points per trip. If they were 14th they would essentially add 5 points per game.

The other big problem I think they have on offense is they feel like a team that has some deep valleys when things aren't clicking. I want to say there was 7 straight drives in the second half that ended in a 3 and out or turnover. I mean you do that and the fact our defense only gave up 21 points vs purdue is a minor miracle.

Kiffin sure would be entertaining.
We went from the crazy guy on the sideline that we all put up with but were embarrassed by, to the boring ho hum loser on the sideline, to the cocky stoic who can't win close games.

I think Kiffin would bring some much needed energy and swagger to the program. And he won't have to go through a rebuild like Frost did. He can come in, go get a transfer QB, and then start throwing YOLO bombs to Betts and Manning.

Kinda like the promoting Chins idea. Would he be ready though? I would invest emotionally into that. Might be a tad awkward though
