You boys have any recommendations for a guy who prefers scotch and wants something in a bourbon or rye that's not a vanilla or oak bomb? In a rye, especially, I'm okay if it's hugely spicy otherwise. Bonus points for anything that's a little bit "funky" or otherwise oddly complex and integrated.

Woodford, Buffalo Trace, Basil Hayden, Calumet, hell even Makers, they're all good to start with to start getting your taste of bourbon. I'm not a rye guy, just never have been. If you're feeling wild, for a barrel strength proof maybe go with a Bookers. That should get you started out just fine. Once you've passed the 6th grade, we'll initiate you into Junior High with some better options. 😉

Thanks for the reply! Sorry, I should have been more specific: I've had a lot of these bourbons before; I've got decent experience with the spirit, but I tend to focus more on scotch. I was curious if anyone had something a bit more off-the-beaten-path.

I've been drinking. Finished off my Basil Hayden the other day and just broke into my new favorite bourbon Rowan's Creek since I can't find any fucking Blanton's anywhere.

How about you all?

I’m a big Buffalo Trace, Dickel and Bulleit guy

My usual go to's are Blanton's, Blanton's Gold, and Weller 12.

Have not had Weller 12. Blantons? Plenty. I've met them, well some of their distillers and marketing people through events in Louisville. He was feeding us Blantons and Gold all night. Was a good night.
POS “iam4nualways” commented on the rss that Blantons is overrated and overpriced. Phvk him

You know what? I bought a bottle of Kirkland Bourbon and it isn’t half bad. $30 for a 1L bottle. It’s made in Tennessee so it’s probably Dickel but it makes a good Old Fashioned.

I'm calling every little store in Aurora and offering $10 over MSRP
Yeah, I definitely paid a mark up. About 90/bottle... which is unfuckingbelievable considering I used to buy the shit 9 years ago for around 45-ish. Oh well... the things we do for love. I'm not sure when he'll have it in again, but in your call list add E-470 Wine and Spirits. They're just up the hill from us. Good dude who runs the place.

$90 isn't terrible. I pay around $100 usually secondary so you are still under that. I see some guys sell for $120
