So I caved and my kids are going to be getting a puppy in May...

Yep. We basically call it “brain doesn’t match the bladder.”

There’s a genetic relationship between the physical size of the dog (including it’s bladder) and the part of the brain that allows it to hold it in. When a dog gets excited, it sends some impulses to its bladder that it needs to pee, much like when humans get nervous we feel we need to pee.

Most large dogs and small pure bred dogs are able to hold it in. With small hybrids and designer breeds, the females will typically release the same or similar dopamine levels when excited as their larger counterparts. The problem is that while this signal is the same size, a small designer/hybrid female may have a bladder 1/4 or 1/8 the size that it’s brain was designed to control.

It can sometimes happen with bigger hybrids like standard golden doodles if there was a significant size difference between the parents, but happens 90%+ of the time to varying degrees in and designer breed where a large dog was bred down in size using a mini-poodle. Hence why I recommend the larger poodle-hybrids.

Wow, that might some explain some things with my wife’s dog that I thought were just random. She’s a mini golden doodle. She’s insane and pees everytime someone walks through the door with excitement, excluding me and my wife cause she obviously sees us the most
Used to have a black lab/german shepherd cross that did the exact same thing

Aaahhhhhh that makes a lot of sense, exactly what happens. Sooooo just get used to it then, sounds good lol thank you!

Got talked into a dog last winter…. Now have 2. They are good pups though and keep each other company while we are out of the house.

Neither shed.

F1B goldendoodle, supposed to be 50 lbs… 8 months out and pushing 90. Huge dog like Clifford but a great pup. Immediately potty trained and listens. Loves to chew though and collect and vomit socks. How do those who don’t kennel when gone do it? Our doodle would eat all the trash and socks in the house he could find, and he would find it.

Coton du tulear, wife found it from the same breeder. Never heard of one but great little dog. Pretty much potty trained and non shedding. Although like 10 pounds gets along and plays great with the giant doodle.

Should be good with a male in terms of what I was talking about.
Any thoughts on when/if to get your male dog neutered? Have a standard f2b goldendoodle. Ours is about 5 months and 30 lbs. Should be 50 to 60 lbs full grown. I've heard around 6 months and I've heard to wait a bit longer with larger dogs. TIA

You know if you guys would just get normal dog breeds you wouldn’t have to make excuses as to why your breeds suck

It’s not great when you dog is it’s own sister and cousin lol

Have got a 3 year old inbred mut that was abandoned and abused as a puppy, got him at 3 months old and is the best dog in the world. Sweet as can be and gentle
I'll never understand why people get a dog and then abuse them. Like, if you aren't happy with it, just get rid of it, why abuse the thing? The easy answer of course is to put it on Facebook for $3000 and someone will buy it.

The long and short of it is that there are a lot of idiots that don’t understand the responsibility or cost of a dog.

He was pretty messed up when I got him, cost a ton in vet bills but when I first saw him I was sitting down and he crawled up in my lap and napped, the couple that was fostering him said he never would approach anyone, had to have him at that exact moment

Wait until at least 12 months. The best numbers I’ve found say that if you do it at 6 months, he’ll be 4+ times more likely to get a few cancers. There’s this old fashioned idea it has to be done by 6 months and that idea has led to a lot of suffering for dogs and early loss for families.

I usually have standard poodles wait till 18-24 months and golden retrievers wait at least 12, so if it was my own personal dog, I’d probably wait 15-18.

It’s ultimately up to you though, just my 2 cents.

Thankfully I WFH, so not an issue for us. The dogs get as much time outside as they want, but if we’re need to go somewhere for the day, they have never peed or pooped inside for up to 12 hours (never been longer than that).
Both took less than a week to potty train, and haven’t been in a crate since. Neither will even let you put your hand in their mouth, let alone bite anyone or gnaw on them. Some of that is luck of the draw, some is the breed, and some is training, but I’m unlikely to ever have any other type of dog. English Setters have spoiled the shit out of me.
My dad had one of them. She was a good dog.

Do they create some bad unbreakable habits by then though? Our vet acted like 6 months was fine, no I’m concerned.

Temperament is temperament to be honest and humping is humping. Research is starting to say that if there is a difference in humping and temperament between neutered and late/un-neutered dogs, it’s minimal.
