Breaking Interesting quote from John Cook

Not one just gives people money
You are correct. There are always kick backs…and there can and should be benefits. And those should not be the ability to have the input on people decisions and the type of influence that some do. It’s that, which has got us to where we are.

Donate big money, get your name on buildings, get priority access to the backstage, but you don’t play in the band.

You don’t think T. Boone Pickens (RIP) or Phil Knight had/have some major say in what went/goes on at their respective schools. They donate the money so they can have influence on the program, that is the whole point. Their ultimate goal is for the program to be successful, and by donating that amount of money, they want a say in how that gets done.

I never said that I don’t believe they think they should have a say. Never said that at some institutions they don’t. I know exactly how it works.

What I said or was alluding to, is that because they donate large sums of money, it should not entitle them to decision making in regards to who holds what role in those respective institutions.

And, when those respective institutions allow those type of situations to arise or occur, especially when there are multiple constituencies applying for that decision making…it then creates situations where those institutions suffer.

Perhaps not to unlike what our university has experienced.

Money and the opportunity of power does strange things to people. Board of Regents like the idea of being close to big money and power. There is opportunity in those types of roles. Deals and promises are made and leverage is well, leveraged.

Even more so in a small pond like Nebraska.
