Breaking Interesting quote from John Cook

The issue is 3 members of the BOR are in the so-called Tradition Coalition. They are the bosses of the Chancellor and University President, and approve contracts of the AD and the head coaches, so they do hold A LOT of influence. Several of them are very close to TO, who in turn carries a lot of weight with several big donors. Twice in the last 10 years: 2013 with Bo, and 2021 with Frost, they have literally stepped in and prevented the AD from firing the Head FB coach, through a combination of mostly financial but also political pressure. When you influence the people who write the checks AND you approve the contracts, you’ve got all the bases covered.
By all means, let's take it to another level and elect one of them Governor!

The reason why I hate this so much is because the Frost apologists are going to point to this as the reason why Frost deserves a fresh start under Turd. That’s complete and utter horse shit. Every indication is that things were bad under Moos but Moos wasn’t coaching the FB team to a losing record every season he was here.
To be fair, this was something I was saying that needed to be a factor in Turd's decision before it became public.

I truly don't know what all happens behind the scenes, but I do know I had a few people who I talk that have a peak under the covers to mention they felt things weren't set up for Frost to have success. That does not absolve Frost for his record, but the decision Turd had to make was if I fix x,y,z is Frost successful?

The best result in this whole situation is for Frost to be successful. You have your coach for the next 20+ years, your big $ donors are happy, the fan base is happy, etc... Thats why I felt if the answer was maybe you had to bring him back.

The "TC/Tradition Coalition" stuff is always kind of annoying because it's been used for 15+ years now as a mysterious all-encompassing boogeyman group to blame for all our problems. We've seen the TC get blamed for: Solich being hired, Steve Pederson being hired as AD, ironically... Callahan being bad, Osborne being hired as AD, Pelini being hired, Pelini not being fired fast enough, Riley being bad, Eichorst being bad, Moos being hired, Moos being fired(?), Frost getting extended, Frost not being fired, and plenty of misdemeanors inbetween.

It's easy to blame a shadowy conspiracy for everything, but isn't it easier to just say there are some dweeb boosters/politicians who throw their money around because they want Tom Osborne to think they're cool? And they keep sticking their noses where they don't belong because we've been in a power vacuum due to sucking for most of the last 20 years? Is that all the "Tradition Coalition" is?

Don't get me wrong, people like that are incredibly annoying and power-hungry and very often wrong, but it seems like the type of thing that is common for just about every big time program.

I do not see many other big-time programs that keep coaches with 4 straight losing seasons. In fact, it has never happened in the history of college football. Most big-time programs do not let their past get in the way of their future success. Trying to recreate the past is a fool's errand.

I hate conspiracy theories as much as the next guy, but the TC was never blamed for Solich being hired. TO went behind everyone's back and hired him. And since it was TO, nobody said shit. This was the beginning of the end of Husker Football.

It's pretty obvious that all the coaches w/o alleged "ties" to the program never got a fair shake here compared to the ones that did. Why is that? What Frost has done to this point should have gotten his ass fired. And he would have been fired at any other program with his shitty results.

Now the apologists will say that Frost wasn't set up for success b/c Moos was an absentee drunkard. Well if Frost is so goddamn smart, shouldn't he have surrounded himself with the best assistants he could get when got hired? Who let Frost make all the important decisions if it wasn't the absentee Moos? Why is Frost just now hiring established coaches instead after year 1 or 2?

If this works out and gets turned around, everyone will praise Frost...while anyone with a shred of intelligence knows it was Turd pushing for the changes. Frost would have stayed with the status quo.

It’s perfect that TC also works for Tim Claire. Such an incredible piece of shit to his core.
10000% my Uncle is a small time booster and a TC'er at heart. We have battled over the years when it comes to Husker Athletics as he wanted "All Things Nebraska" and I wanted "The best coaches/AD possible". Whatever TO told him he wanted. He was so excited Solich was hired to replace TO, then pissed Solich was fired, hated Pederson, refused to support Callahan, was pissed Pelini was fired, hated Eichorst, wouldn't support Riley, makes every excuse possible for Frost, blames Moos, loves Turd....... his ties go back to some of the ole time TC'ers & TO. He worshipped what they told him.

Well after all those years of promoting the TC Agenda and defending them he was part of a business deal that involved Tim Claire and he realized what a scumbag he was. Tim's true colors showed and my uncle was shocked that someone like that could be on the Nebraska BOR, and that he was believing what he was telling him all these years. Now he is questioning things like how could Claire have been receiving a 6 figure salary from The Bo Pelini Foundation? Before he defended them and now he is second guessing everything he has been told. He's also learned of some of the other financial and political shenanigans they have been pulling for the last couple decades. To an extent it has really rocked his world the more he has learned. He worshipped what TO and many of the ole TC'ers were telling him. He still blames the "Outsiders" but no longer believes what people like Claire are telling him as to what is best for the program. I feel sad for him because he really is crushed that he was so blind to so many shady things. To him Nebraska stands for Trust and doing the right thing. Now he has seen firsthand and he knows to "Follow the Money" or politics

It's a wild obsession with no change or getting back to the good old days.

I live in a small town, we are about to go through a football coaching change. I have had a few friends who are lifers here say "Wish we could find someone who is from here"

I just want a guy who knows how to win and is willing to do the drudgery that it takes to actually win.

I completely agree with this by the way, I just think it's a problem that comes with the entire program/fanbase though rather than just the dreaded "TC" standing in the way. If Frost would've gotten fired this year there would've been a furious response from far too many fans and a gigantic split in the fanbase (again...). It's crazy, but it's absolutely true. The "TC" just takes advantage of that old-timey-county-fair outlook of the fans. I don't think they would be able to throw their weight around as much if their views weren't shared by so much of the fanbase.

I agree. To some extent it almost feels like a fear of change or insecurity. Like they don't think an outsider will want to stay in Nebraska or can be proud of coaching at Nebraska. I have relatives that are worried outsiders won't understand our values or fit in. Or will get us successful and then leave. That's a good problem to have. Give me the best coach possible.

Ironic part is I am walking the fine line of having to eat some Crow for the hire of Mickey & Busch. They both have their Nebraska Ties but were IMHO some of the best hires possible also. I was 100% behind hiring both of them as they are proven Power5 Coaches, and I loved their recruiting chops. Their pride in Nebraska and the recruiting energy they have brought has really appeared to give the remaining staff a shot in the arm. Also I like having Busch on staff because I have families ties to him so will occasionally get some minor info. He won't share the true Insider Stuff as he is too professional for that but at least will hear some tidbits.

Any coach out there...literally any coach...could justify hiring Joseph & Busch.

I think the TC is just an easy way to refer to the people making the decisions. Its not a conspiracy...its all real and out there in plain sight. The decisions made behind closed doors aren't always public, but connect the dots. Jim Pillen, Tim Claire, and Jack Stark are loyal to TO and do his bidding. Jim Pillen is one of TO's best friends. TO along with Pillen have a lot of influence on major boosters. They control the purse strings for money coming into the AD, but also the contracts because the BOR approves everything. They've closed the loop.

I hate opining on stuff like that when I don't really have any clue whose idea that was. Evidence certainly leans to Frost being on board with it but who knows where the idea came from and how far the plans even got. It all fell apart anyway so it's kind of a moot point.
Was 100% Frost. We'll never get an official answer, but there shouldn't be a doubt in anyone's mind about what went down.

The TC, Bounds and Green. We have had poor leadership from within the University that is far too influenced by Donors money. The more I have learned the more I hate, and don't like using that word but it is true, but I hate the TC. They undermined so much stuff in our Athletic Department to get their way. Now they have even divided our boosters. Moos and other AD's get blamed for what looks like doing a shitty job but if they are following directions or have their hands tied what are they supposed to do? Go against the TC and get fired? Or follow the TC's agenda/rules and have a shitty program?
This is spot freaking on. Money gives some people the idea that not only are they a donor, but they are also administration/decision makers.

Spot on.

Someone (I don’t remember who) I thought put it well, they said everyone imagines the Nebraska AD being run like the show House of Cards, but in reality it’s probably more like The Office.

Are there boosters who throw their weight and influence around? Of course. Those exist at every major program. I just don’t buy that it’s as shadowy and nefarious as some people make it sound.
