I was invited to go to the range with some State Troopers this morning. I haven’t been to the range in 6 years and I haven’t ever been great shooting handguns.

Forgot how much I hate .45s (1911 and a G30) and I did decent with the 9mm (G19) BUT absolutely crushed it with a .380 (Sig P365), including 10/10 rapid fire at 20 yards.

Fellas…. is rocking a .380 as a conceal carry a girl move? Cuz I think I’m gonna buy one now.

Maybe you'd like the P365 in 9mm too

Libs and limp wrists stay out.

Looking at purchasing a few guns after selling off basically everything several years ago.

Hunting rifles and shotguns I'm good. Handguns all I have is a Springfield xd 9mm.

I'm looking at getting a .45 1911, a subcompact 9mm for wife (she used to have Glock 19), and an entry level AR. Possibly another full size 9mm for myself.

Suggestions for each? I did like the feel and weight of the Springfield 1911 Defender and Garrison, and Kimber Custom II.
Converted from Glock to Sig a few years ago. Have 5 of them now. Shot everything under the sun before I made the switch. Would suggest you do the same as well.

There are many excellent handgun options out there. They all feel and shoot differently. Find what fits/works best for you. It matters.

On the Sig end, would look at the P320 series. Many different options to choose from. Just purchased 320 Macro and it’s fantastic. Compact, but larger grips. I have big hands, so works very well for me compared to the 365 I have, which I love also.

Bottom line, a ton of great choices. Find a range, where you can shoot different brands and models.

Good luck!

I ended up getting a Sig P365 xmacro, P320 x compact, Springfield XDM 4.5 elite, Glock 45, and Daniel Defense M4 V9. Throw in a few red dots and lights.

My father in law has a six HK4s (.32 ACP), he fucked up his right hand decades ago and taught himself to shoot left handed and prefers a lower caliber.

Rolls with a HK4 cuz when he was in the army (india) he had a Makarov which is just a shitty Soviet knockoff of a H&K

What's the consensus best model & method for concealed carry when the top consideration is compact/concealability & not printing while typically wearing thin/athletic clothes?

Preferably 9mm.

Nothing wrong with a .380 round. It’s a “knocked down” 9mm in the same way that a .40 cal is a knocked down 10mm, a .38 Special is a knockdown .357 Magnum, etc.

A few years ago, I sat next to a former OPD guy on the plane. He led their SWAT team and was the guy you frequently saw on the news. I asked Chuck what he carried, and he told me that it was Sig P238 in .380 ACP, which is my daily carry as well. Light, easily concealed and comfortable to carry all day, every day.

Let’s talk ammo. You’ll need different ammo for the winter than you’ll carry in the summer. Why? Most of the hollow points for smaller rounds (9mm included) risk getting plugged with material from heavy outer garments. If the tip is plugged, it may prevent the round from “mushrooming” out or not penetrating deep enough to cause a wound channel significant enough to stop the attack.

Lehigh Defense makes a couple of solid core copper bullets that are excellent rounds to consider. Since you probably aren’t reloading your own rounds, go with the Underwood Extreme Defender ammo here. The tip of both the Extreme Defender and Extreme Penetrator round look similar to the tip of a Philips bead screwdriver.

Now consider that pistol (& rifle) barrels are “rifled” (grooved) internally to spin the bullet so that it rotates and flies straight (unlike a musket bullet, which made whizzing sounds as it zipped in a random direction down range). When that screwdriver like tip - spinning at 60,000+ revolutions per minute- encounters a varmint, it acts like an auger and creates a YUGE wound channel AND penetrates to an FBI targeted depth of roughly 14-18 inches before coming to a stop … fully intact. And VERY effectively stopping the attack.

I could also point you to a study done a few years ago that compiled data across a variety of firearms that were involved in shootings (10,000+ IIRC), and the study concluded that anything from a .380 ACP and above was an effective self-defense firearm and capable of stopping an attack.

Also consider how advanced bullet technology has become in the last decade and you no longer need a massive firearm to stop an attack.

Of course, ANY gun can kill with the right shot placement, but a self defense concealed carry firearm’s purpose is to stop an attack and allow you and your family to relocate to a safer location.

Helpful link to the Underwood Extreme Defender ammo show here.

Preferably 9mm.

Of everything I handled since my original post, I'd go Sig P365 xmacro. Also consider the Springfield Hellcat or Glock 43x. Similar size and print on all. P365 xmacro has 17 round capacity and compensator. Hardly any recoil or flip with it.

Comparison on those 3, https://www.handgunhero.com/compare/springfield-hellcat-pro-vs-sig-sauer-p365-xmacro-vs-glock-g43x

Lower left in picture.

Agreed. An iconic firearm that belongs in every man's collection. The .45 Automatic is what John Moses Browning had in mind when he invented them in ... wait for it ... 1911 in support of our soldiers during their war in the Philippines, but they're also available to shoot a multitude of cartridge sizes these days, so if someone has a 9mm pistol and ammo, they can get a 1911 that shoots that cartridge.

I'll add another couple of "must own" suggestions to the thread:
  1. A revolver (a.k.a. "wheel gun"). I love them for their versatility (e.g. a .357 magnum revolver can shoot both the .38 Special cartridge for plinking and a .357 Magnum cartridge for hunting or personal defense) and their consistency. You pull the trigger - they go "bang". Failures with revolvers are extremely rare, and that's a good thing if the firearm is needed in a defensive situation. Small ones (e.g. .22 LR/Long Rifle) are great for new shooters to develop good firearm shooting and safety habits, and there is a continuum all the way up to the monster handguns discussed earlier can can handle the most dangerous "game" on the North American continent.
  2. A lever action rifle. Another American icon, literally the firearm that won the west and helped settle our great nation. There are a couple of fun things about lever action rifles, too:
    1. Cowboys generally carried the same size cartridge in their revolver and their lever action rifle. Sources of ammo weren't as abundant as they are today, so being able to keep one size of ammo in your gun belt was a pretty handy thing. I have lever action rifles in .357/38 and .44 (Special or Magnum) for that very reason. The .45-70 Government rifle I keep around in case I need to kill ANYTHING. That gun fucks.
    2. Simply put, they're less likely to face any governmental regulation and oversight than the modern semi-automatic rifles. Henry's slogan is "Protect and Provide", and it's a good one as they make great hunting rifles that can be used for self defense, if needed. They're just not viewed as a massive threat to society ... and yet we won the west with them. 🤷‍♂️
    3. They're fun AF to shoot.

You got that right about the 45-70.
That thing is an animal.
I think you and I have the same rifle. Stainless, composite, night sights. Fuck them bears.
In case you're curious, magnum research makes a 45-70 revolver.

IIRC, it’s a “BFR”. I’ve read that some bush pilots carry them under the seats if their planes. Just in case. They’d have to VERY unpleasant to shoot!

The demo ranch guy on YouTube can't decide which is more unpleasant to shoot, his .500 magnum or his 45-70 revolver.

He’s a fun, crazy kid to watch. Making a boatload of $$$ on his reviews, too.

I’m a Paul Harrell fan and can always burn some time watching Hickock45 “smoke some pots”.

The demo ranch guy has the YouTube stuff all figured out. It's crazy that he has two completely unrelated channels that have millions of subscribers.

Hickock does some great reviews. I really like the military arms channel as well.
