Yard Care

Well after all our grass died because of the runoff from the new build behind us, we decided to build a berm, add some rock, and then new mulch. It was some shitty work, but definitely made it look better and hopefully helps with any big rains in the future. Still got a lot to do to finish everything up, but the hardest part is done. Looks sharp

That looks incredible!

You know, there's something satisfying about walking outside and hearing a little rustley crackle under your feet, and realizing that you're hearing the sound of a dead weed that you treated for last week...

Killed this on of a bitch last weekend. Bout time for some Grass Pad Fall Fertilizer. In the process of figuring out my aerating plan as well. How long do I need to wait to put down fertilizer after putting down 24 hour grub killer? Grass Pad recommends two applications of their fall stuff, about a month apart after over seeding.

Think I'm going to take a crack at aerating myself this year. Ace has a deal to rent an aerator for $25 for 2 hours. Think it's $35 for 4 hours. Fine either way. Sounds like the back patio is finally getting done late next week, which is going to tear up that grass you can see in my photo above. It's another skill I wanna get good at over time, so figure might as well pull the trigger this year. Probably two weeks out then I'll over seed and lay some fresh fertilizer and lawn food down.

If you are in Nebraska, you’re pushing it waiting another two weeks to overseed. That baby grass needs a chance to mature a little before the first hard frost.

So yeah. My entire front lawn has died in the last few weeks.

I guess we had just the right weather conditions for an explosion of armyworms around here, and they're wreaking havoc. Shit sucks.

Aerated and overseeded one week ago. Been watering like crazy. Results will turn out great though

Fertilize it and water a lot. Should come back to life if it was armyworms.

Yeah, I really don't think I need to be doing any more watering, lol. Over the last 90 days we're like 12" above average, with more on the way.

I know. My best friend that’s done the mowing has done the aerating the last couple years, stopped last year, and the buddy I had do it last year, wasn’t doing it for a month when I reached out a few weeks ago. I was planning to do it this weekend, but then the patio plan wheels were dropped into full motion the other day, so I don’t have much a choice. My buddy at work referred me to his guy a couple weeks ago, but he was simply too expensive for only aerating, and said he would still be a few weeks out. Trial and error for doing it myself this year, get it right on timing for next year I guess.

Really late and I understand that, but finally got all aeration, new seed, and new fertilizer down over the weekend. Sprinklers are still on so I'm hoping to get enough water down while it's still barely warm enough to make an impact. Haven't gotten my email from the sprinkler company yet so I'm crossing fingers that I still have a few weeks left.

Feels good!

Anyone deal with voles (field mice) in their yard? I had them bad in 2020 when first moved in got them under control then but they are back now. A couple weeks ago while in the back yard a hawk got one about 10 feet from me and that was bad ass. I put poison down their holes then fill them in with dirt but they keep coming back. I live right off 156th so no one is killing the ones that live between my yard and the street. Was thinking about putting some fake owls around my back yard to see if that helps.

Regarding water, it’s not the time but the amount. A good way to test this is tuna cans around your yard, test how long it takes to fill them and then adjust the time from there. If it takes 5 minutes to get half an inch in the cans run that zone for 15 minutes to get 1.5”. If another zone takes 10 minutes to get half an inch run that zone for 30 minutes etc.

Just had one that annihilated my back yard in the last month. Late in the year obviously so I just let it go, but it had its way with about a 10 yard area. I didn't do enough in the early Fall to prevent it unfortunately.

I've seen a few posts of that trick. It's probably why I have voles where I get them due to not much run off in certain spots. I need to simply put the effort in for that trick.

Saw a video where the guy filled their holes up with a gas and then ignited it. Saw the ground squirrel fly.

Been reading in to it, poison not a good idea as it may kill predators. Going to try traps inside turned over 5 gallon (so my dog or squirrels don’t get in to them). From there going to spray a mixture of castor oil and soap in my yard as well as the green space behind my yard.

Another tip which was try to attract hawks or owls. Not going to be able to do that but will probably get a fake owl or two. When I first moved in there were hawks posted up nonstop on power lines behind my house but that didn’t do anything.

PVC elbows with poison in the corner so pets don't get to it.

I’ve done that but really more concerned with something eating one after they have been poisoned

Unrelated but saw this guy while walking my dog recently. Was very close to a creek, think it’s a muskrat

Correct.

When I was about 16 I was in the basement about 2 am. Dog stayed in the kitchen in a pen. Heard running around upstairs and thought dog got out. Came upstairs to find dog sleeping in pen. Something runs across room into spare bedroom under the bed. Had no idea what it was at first. Got a flashlight and shined it under bed to see the muskrat staring back at me. Was a true wtf moment.

Took a while but dad and I finally caught it with a net and put it outside. No idea how it got in the house.
