Thinking about the White era, and wondering if the fact that the defense was good last year allowed Rhule to be complacent about the offense in the offseason.

If the defense had been more average, would he have been forced to address the Satterfield situation? The 2023 defense maybe created the impression that we were closer to getting over the hump than we actually were.

The team was so close to making a bowl and surpassing expectations, it was easy to stay the course. If we had only won 4, for example, there would have been more pressure to go back to the drawing board.
You're coping

I don’t really think whites defense is exotic.
CFB teams should only run a 3-3-5 or a 4-2-5.
If he wants to run a 4-3 or 3-4 we should probably fire him.

We aren’t playing just big 10 west offenses now most of the season.
Well here's a difference of opinion we will have.

4-2-5 and 3-3-5 are largely different. If we are going to a 4-2-5 which would be far more "traditional" in that you're not as reliant upon bringing added pressure outside of your 4 down linemen. The 3-3-5 by it's nature is always bringing someone else from somewhere. And Tony is one of the most prominent poster-children of the 335. So - if we want to go away from it, Tony ain't learning and implementing the 4-2-5. It's as simple as that.

I don't understand how this is a bad look for Rhule? He knows what he's doing. Sure Tony's defense kept us in close games but where were they for the Illinois game? Has TW ever help an RPO to a less than 4 yard gain at Nebraska?
That and this is big boy P5 football. You lose assistants, especially if they are good coaches.

Continuity is amazing but very rare anymore in P5 coaching staffs. People get hired and fired much more quickly which leads to the snowball effect of coaches moving, bringing their people with them, etc.

I'm sure Rhule has had a shortlist contingency plan in his back pocket for this.

I think Rhule for sure expected the defense to perform at an Cockeye level where it could drag an offense with a tr freshman QB still getting its footing to 8-9 wins. You could've also just brought in Kyle McCord to bridge to Raiola if you thought the D might take a step back. White has no doubt improved the floor, and while it might've been some personnel issues, I do think the picture is a little muddied when you take into account how we performed against top units v. weak offenses. That 2023 slate had some bad teams over the home stretch.

It's ironic that WiscyDicks has since installed a garbage offense that Bo could probably stop. They've dumbed down their program that much for us.
Wisconsin is just beginning their simulation. Fickel is their Callahan for wanting to run the "Air Raid" offense and next they will counter with Leonard similarly like we did with Blo. Have a few good years and hire a Riley. Going to be fun watching them cry for awhile.

I think there's some merit to this. BUT I don't think Rhule was firing Satterfield under any circumstances after 2023. He felt like the Sims thing fucked him and it wouldn't be fair.

But it definitely would have spotlighted the 2024 offense in a different way if the D was 55th in 2023.

Unfortunately Rhule was bringing Satt back regardless.

They're really not that different, They're both 8 man front structures.

I think there’s a decent amount of non walkon transfers. 10-15
Probably. There's already been two in Ervin and Thompson. As long as it is those kind of guys, older guys who have not cracked the starting lineup, then I think fans will be OK with it. Though I am sure there will be a guy or two we really like that will leave, too. Especially if they follow Pot Roast to a new team.

Add Carroll Jackson. And Coleman

Rhule is probably knew this was happening and the reason why he brought Snow in as a consultant. Probably playing 3D chess while everyone else is playing checkers. Or, I'm wishful thinking and Rhule is clueless.

I sometimes wonder if Rhule is listening to advice he maybe shouldn't with Snow.

*Rhule shows footage of the defense*

"Well, in this case I'd do things the same way I always have in the only system I've known since the 1980s!"

*Rhule shows some other footage of the defense*

"Oh yeah, right there I'd do basically the same thing I've been doing since you were in middle school, Matt!"
