Keep in mind that this was Dean, but he feels pretty strongly that White will be back next year. No idea what his source is, but he says that White and his family are extremely comfortable and happy in Lincoln. He said that if he wanted to be a HC, he would have made the move last year with the options he had.
Dream scenario is he’s a Venables type and will hold out for an elite job.

What if Rhule goes to Notre Dame though

That was my exact thoughts too.

If I'm being honest, I think he is gone after this year. But, I also can see what Dean is saying. I know that he and his family have some pretty traditional, conservative beliefs. I can see them definitely enjoying life in Nebraska and wanting to stick around if we continue to pay him like the kind of DC he is.

I guess in the end, I'm not worried about it. Rhule will find someone else. I don't see both White and Butler being here next year, but you never know. It's hard to leave a place if you are happy with what you do and who you work with, especially in a tumultuous profession like coaching.

I'm selfish, I hope there are only shitty spots open and White decides to return for another year. Unlikely, but possible.
Yup I feel the same way but if we are lucky enough to have him just one more year for year 3, ONLY because the HC jobs that he is offered he turns down because he doesn’t like the support above the AD/NIL. I’m guessing he will find one this season though and I will probably be a fan of his and follow him closely. Hate to lose him but hard not to root for him to achieve his dream of HC.

I can see the argument though that these jobs like SDSU, Wyoming, Western Michigan, Boise St are not worth taking anymore if you're a DC at the level of Ryan Walters or Jim Leonard or Tony White. You're starting too far down.

I actually think that we're close to a point where KSU, ISU, Baylor etc will be too far down for an elite B1G/SEC DC to take. The B1G/SEC just too far apart. You might get to a point where the money at an Illinois or Kentucky is just so far beyond what KSU or Virginia can offer that you're better off waiting for a lower B1G/SEC job to open up (as opposed to an upper level Big 12 job).

But is a lower-level B1G/SEC job the smart business move? Generally those teams are at the lower level because they have less resources or some other reason and are harder to win at. G5 schools seem to have more parity and the gap between the top and bottom teams has more to do with their coaching. Justy $.02

It would be tough to go from a Nebraska/B1G budget to a Big 12 budget. He's not going somewhere that will give him the resources he has as DC here.

IMHO it’s all relative. He may have less resources in the Big 12, but his conference opponents are in the same boat.

The only way I could 100% turn on Tony is if Kirk finally goes to pasture and Cockeye hired him. Good thing they are a bunch of racist fucks and we really don't need to worry about that.

I'm not too worried there. Their special teams coach, LeVar Woods, has garnered a bit of respect over the years with a lot of conjecture about when, not if, he eventually becomes a head coach. I could see him being part of a succession plan when Ferentz is done. He's a great recruiter for them, and if he can keep Phil Parker around on defense (an in house promotion might be the only way they can), I could see Cockeye considering him the one to maintain the discipline in play Cockeye is known for on defense and special teams while being open to bringing their offense kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
