I disagree. Northwestern and Purdue are far better teams now.
They've improved, but the overall strength of the B10 West has not. NW improved and won it 2x because teams like Wisconsin have declined.

That and NW's 2 highest rated teams in the NU B10 era were in Pelini and Riley eras (2012 and 2017).

Bo won some games however the quality product was going downhill every season plus Pelini left the cupboards so empty. Much of his success was in the weaker Big 12 and I think Carl Pelini was a big help as when he left Bo seemed to go off the deep end a bit. We were not as well of a run program without Carl. Wonder if he didn't balance Bo out a little bit. B0's recruiting was plummeting and the last few seasons the roster was coming up with more and more issues. We had the most depleted roster I have seen in my time as a Husker Fan. So many major holes in the roster. ie Riley was forced to start 3 Walk On Offensive Linemen his first season, and 1 was a Freshman. You can't compete in the B1G without decent offensive linemen. Plus Pelini went scorched earth when he left the program. Peed in the Punchbowl, actually more like he took a massive dump in it. Left a Floater for Husker Fans
I always thought Bo had issues after Carl and Marvin left. It seemed like they were the adults that could keep Bo grounded, they were replaced by yes men and the program headed downhill as did Bo's attitude.

On top of coasting in neutral his past 2 years Pelini was fired in 2014 which was before the rise of: Cockeye, NW, Michigan, Penn State and Ohio State was just entering the top stratosphere after being an “almost” team.

Pelini would not have won 9 games in 2015, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 or 22.

If you look at Pelini's schedule his last 4 seasons at NU, each schedule had a minimum of 3 freebie wins on it and those freebie wins have completely disappeared.

Sometimes NU actually needed luck in their freebie wins too. People forget but the Ron Kellogg Hail Mary win vs NW... NW finished 1-8 in the B1G that year. So we needed luck to win some of the garbage games.

A backsliding Bo vs this version of the B1G would have been ugly. Minus the 3 freebie wins he would be at 6-6 maybe. 5-7 also likely. A change was needed.

Pelini would have had more NCAA records (forcible rape) set on him if he had continued to he the head coach at Nebraska.

LEST WE FORGET, he was the Defensive coordinator at LSU since he was fired here and had NFL talent everywhere (including 1st rounders at ever level of the Defense) and he still still STILL had NCAA records set on him.

Northwestern has declined a bit, but still better than any time during Riley or Frost eras. By a lot.

The last two years they've been awful. They had a solid run of about 5 years they were decent.

They won 1 game last year?

I was curious and bored….

NW records in Frost regime era:

2018: 9-5

2019: 3-9

2020: 7-2*** (Covid year, probably would have been 10-4 or 11-3 with a regular schedule)

2021: 3-9

2022: 1-11

vs.

NW record during Riley era:

2015: 10-3

2016: 7-6

2017: 10-3

NW record while Pelini was here:

2011: 6-7

2012: 10-3

2013: 5-7

2014: 5-7

- Nebraska vs. NW while Pelini was HC: 26-24.

- NW only had 1 winning season

- Nebraska was 3-1 vs. NW during that time. 2 of the wins were end of the game heroic wins. AKA pure luck.

- NW record while Riley was here: 27-12

- NW had two 10 win seasons in a 3 year stretch

- Nebraska was 1-2 vs. NW during that time, 2 close loses in Lincoln to 10 win teams. Not depression causing losses by any stretch, especially considering how bad Nebraska was.

- NW record while Frost was here: 23-36

- NW had 2 winning seasons in a 5 year stretch

- Nebraska was 2-3 vs. NW during that time, 2 close loses and 2 close wins

- NW won the Big 10 West twice during this stretch
