A little late to the party, but let's face it, Rhule was looking for certain characteristics in his coaches. He didn't go out and get the best offensive and defensive coaches, but certain traits in those coaches that he can tutor and get the most of them.

In his previous stops at Temple and Baylor, he brought in coaches that had very little experience at the P5 or any college level and then turned them into some of the most respected coaches as of this last year.

He brought in Satterfield because I am sure that Satterfield, which not the best OC, had characteristics that Rhule can coach up and turn into a good OC/play caller.
I disagree a little...I think he did go out and get one of the best up and coming DCs out there.

after he apparently was turned down by Elijah Robinson

do people forget how close we were to getting Peetz?
the B1G is riddled with top defenses. I hope Satt can out scheme them but I'm suspect
Peetz wasn't going to be OC - he was going to be a 7 figure QB coach

  • Shocked!!

The folks at Syracuse thought that White's next stop was a HC, not another DC job. I really like that hire.

The other assistant hires I like a lot:
  • Knighton - I think he'll be gone to the NFL in a year or two. Rhule just knows how to hire DL coaches. I'm guessing Simpson will take his place.
  • Barthel - I think he's a star in the making
  • Wager - I think him being talked about as a "head coaching legend" in Texas is a little overboard, it's not like he's G.A. Moore or Gordon Wood, but he is a great coach, with great connections and a wonderful reputation in Texas
This by the way is a kiss of death. Nebraska's likely to be terrible at DL, RB and TE now that I've posted this.

So who was calling plays when they went ham on Tennessee and South Carolina? The ball boys?? You guys think their head coach is stupid enough to not see that it wasn’t working only to take away his duties late in the season. Some of you seriously are on the same mental plane as Dean

I think the jury is definitely out on Satterfield. Usually not a good scenario when your old team cheers you out the door. What the hell is our identity going to be?

We have 3 running QBs now on the roster but we are recruiting pro style dudes and then have coaches saying we will run a pro style offense to get guys ready for the NFL.

We best find something to hang our hats on and in a hurry.

I bet these southern dipshits would consider Whipple a great OC last year & I didn’t think he was all that much better than Frost. The main difference was Thompson & Whipple sticking to what works(Trey Palmer post is about it) so I think Satterfield will still be an upgrade from what we’ve had, maybe not anything crazy but slightly better.

I don’t listen to cover 3 but every time someone tells me they listen to it, they think it provides em with superior knowledge like the PFF fanatics. Kicking dirt on us in year 1 seems like they’re mostly picking easy target to prop themselves up.

Jesus we're 3 months from the first game and people are already out on some assistants? Donnie, sure I can see it...but the rest have a clean slate IYAM. People were freaking out about McGuire when he was hired, and now he's a whiz-kid and a dawg on the recruiting trail. This fanbase is bi-polar.
The whole "I would be better at hiring a staff than Matt Rhule" angle was a really fucking dumb angle (that many Husker fans took).

I generally don't go to a dentist and say "I could perform that root canal better than you" or an architect and go "I could design that skyscraper better than you did".... but 60% of our fanbase actually believes they can perform the daily tasks of a HC better than Matt Rhule. It's a bold stance, Cotton.

Dunning-Kruger effect in full force.

This is my thread, and I doubt there's anybody that supports coaches and coaching staffs as much as me.

I'm just pointing out what others in the business are saying, including people that covered the team Satterfield coached for. Bud Elliott is a great listen on the Cover 3 podcast. And is the #1 guy I lean on for college football gambling. But he's also very overboard on analytics and recruiting and values power rating over EVERYTHING so there's no feel for the actual sport sometimes with him.

As I always say, you pay Matt Rhule what you pay him to make these hires and decisions, and you should trust that if that decision turns out to be the wrong one, that Rhule also gets paid to fire those guys.

I just worry when I hear that offenses aren't very QB friendly. If anything your offense should be friendly to your most important player.

South Carolina did go through 4 QBs his first year. Rattler did perform the same for the QB whisperer Lincoln Riley as he did Satterfield. Nobody knows Satterfield's coaching abilities more than Matt Rhule.

I think that part of what's being missed this is going to be Rhule/Satterfield offense, not Satterfield on his own. These 2 have worked together for a long-time so I'm sure they will be on the same page and if they're not Rhule doesn't seem like the guy that wouldn't hesitate to put his foot in Satterfield's ass if needed.
If it doesn't work out year 1 or 2 then fire his ass and throw the bank at Nixon or someone else.

I stopped judging coaching hires and pretending like I knew what I was thinking/talking about when I realized that just being professionally labeled as a professional coach doesn't make someone eligible for whatever level job they wanted.

I recall a lot of people cheering Tim Beck out the door…
