I was joking about this with a buddy. As a kid I just wore tennis shoes and a cheap orange fleece jacket that I would layer up. As an adult it's hard to fight the urge to get the perfect "technical" gear simply because you can afford it. The guy with the realtree camo from Wal-Mart has the potential to shoot a big buck just like the guy fully decked out in Sitka gear.

Full disclosure, yore quoting a recent First Lite addict. Have another package showing up today.

I'm grateful for their "Pro Program" price discounts.

I thought about getting their whitetail catalyst softshell but was worried about layering. Turns out that was a non-issue for this year. I like their wool pants but their previous versions were much thicker. I wear them year around up here.

Got to Idaho yesterday afternoon. Got up this morning made coffee and went out on the front porch to enjoy the coffee with a smoke. My buddy was getting ready to go out for a buck. I put my smoke down, went inside to let him know the turkeys were about 30 yards from the cabin. I could hear them clear as day. So he went to lookie lou and came back to get his shotgun. I anticipate hearing a couple bangs in 3, 2, 1....

Good luck and be safe everyone.

No deer but saw a mom Bobcat and 3 bobkittens. She was the size of our German short-hair and babies were size or adult cats. They acted just like kittens jumping around and playing. Came out about 10 feet from my trail cam which hasn't had a deer on it for a month now. Had only a butt hole shot on mom but she's getting smoked if I see her again.

Extremely slow in area between Seward and Lincoln between I80 and north to a few miles north of Hwy 34. Heard 3 shots all morning. Friends that hunt in that general area said the same.

Just got back from Black Island WMA. Our hunt got "blown" immediately this morning by a nearby shot, followed by a group wandering our area looking for the blood trail. We waited for an hour or so, saw nothing, walked for an hour or so and called it for the day. Will try again tomorrow.

Well, a shit start to a Monday. Went back out to the ground blind this morning at Black Island WMA, and discovered I'd transition from this:

Yep, some sonofabitch stole my brand new ground blind. I was under the (mistaken) impression that hunters were - by and large - an ethical group of people. I was today years old when I found out, and I don't even remember fucking around first! Dadblammit.

I always get a kick out of the "Thank you Lord" people on TV whenever they bag a big buck/bull elk or catch a big ole bass. From my experience from fishing tournaments and dealing with hunters in general, a lot of those people are shady as fuck and do whatever it takes to fill a tag or win a tournament. The bro code doesn't exist anymore to leave other people stuff (sometimes wives) alone.

Bleh, a couple rifle hunters on the neighboring property got my target buck on first day of rifle. Guess I can put the bow away for the year now. I did get a 5x5 Thursday night to at least have my deer steaks and roast for the year.

While that definitely stinks to lose that deer, at least it went to a multi-generational hunt and make that young person's day. Maybe the good Lord will grow ya another one to track and ruminate about for next year. 🙂
