The more I wondered from yesterday, the more it seemed like playcalling improved a little from what we've seen before. Some sets looked bad, but others, we looked good. We did get down the field and put points up, with field goals. And we did that against an Ohio State defense on their home ground after a bye week.I actually don’t think Satterfield is the primary reason Nebraska lost this game the more I’ve settled down/upon re-watch. I do think there were three sequences where I really did not like the play calling (post-interception drive starting at the OSU 7 + last two drives of the game), but NU missed so many plays that were there to be had that I can’t be overly mad, especially in the third quarter. Sharing a few obvious ones that would’ve potentially changed the outcome of the game:
2nd and 10 at the Neb 29 12:05 3Q: NU line blocks a Dante Dowdell run perfectly and he gets through the first and second level untouched. It’s one on one with Dante and Caleb Downs and if Dante can make him miss it’s a TD. Gets shoestring tackled and winds up picking up 14 instead of a 71 yard house call.
1st and 10 at the Neb 43 11:35 3Q: Very next play. Dowdell makes a man miss at the line and again has 1-1 against Caleb Downs where if he makes him miss it’s a TD. Gets tackled for a gain of 12. We wind up with a FG on this drive.
3rd and 4 at the OSU 18 8:32 3Q: We shift two guys at once (by accident?) and Raiola snaps the ball before Fidone gets completely set. We actually run Emmett Johnson off the left side for a first down but get called for an illegal shift and backup 5 yards which leads to….
3rd and 9 at the OSU 23 8:14 3Q: OSU brings a 0 blitz. Jacory Barney is WIDE open but Raiola doesn’t recognize the blitz/get the ball hot to his man. This is a walk in TD for Barney if he gets the ball out. Instead its a sack and we have to kick a FG.
2nd and 10 at the OSU 32 2:41 3Q: Man coverage from Ohio State. We call a switch route with Banks and Neyor both lined up into the far boundary. It’s executed perfectly and a remotely accurate throw is a touchdown for NU. Raiola throws maybe his worst ball of the day and misses a wide open TD.
3rd and 10 at the OSU 32 2:36 3Q: Very next play. Buttguys bring a 0 blitz, Raiola fails to go hot to the open receiver (Barney again- who beats his man and may have scored if the ball comes out) and instead takes a sack. Moves us back out of FG range and we have to punt. Side note- this happens again later in the game and then finally on the third time Raiola recognizes it and throws the little tunnel ball to Neyor in the 4th where we almost score and get 1st and goal before the Dowdell TD.
Again, I certainly had qualms with certain calls and drives. I think we are way too reliant on the screen game but at the same time if OSU is going to play 0 coverage or man you have to run man beaters, and screens are great man beaters when executed well. I would love to see more mesh concepts- we started running more bunch/tight sets in the second half and we actually started moving the ball. We have good TEs- would love to see us use them in the screen game versus just the backs and WRs as well as more drag/mesh routes… the big Fidone catch and run is a great example of what our TEs can do in space when being covered 1-1. I think the reality is we’re dealing with a Freshman QB (who even as talented as he is is having some Freshman moments he has to work through) and a lack of explosive playmakers outside of Barney and it is just tough to call a ton of great plays offensively with that combo. Moving forward in November - I’d like to see:
- More tight/bunch sets with use of an H-Back at times
- More creative perimeter runs, as well as trap and counter instead of running duo over and over again. Running out of tighter sets will allow us to use our TEs to open the edges instead of WRs- we actually ran a great example of this to open the fourth quarter at 14:53 where Fidone got a good block on the edge rusher and Neyor cracked the safety to get Dowdell outside for 19 yards
- Expanded TE use in the passing game (specifically option/mesh/screen routes). Would love a delayed TE screen/arrow route similar to what Michigan killed us with in 2021 repeatedly. Also would slow down the edge pursuit on the screens outside when we do call them to the RBs. Loved the Rahmir interior screen against Buttgers- would like to see that one again
- Continued scrambling ability from Dylan: Don’t want him to take big hits and certainly am not calling for designed QB runs (other than would’ve loved a naked boot on 4th and goal after the pick), but if teams are going to play a ton of man against us like IU and OSU have the last two weeks, we have to make them pay by Dylan being able to move the chains with his feet when needed. It was big against Colorado on the first drive and then felt like he was hesitant to go back to it again for a few weeks… was nice to see the big run in the first half and a couple of chain moving runs beyond that during the rest of the game as well
- More 1-1 deep shots: Lastly, if they’re going to play us 1-1 on the edges, especially if its 0 coverage, take the chances and let Neyor/Banks try to make a play. Banks is a great contested 1-1 catch guy and Neyor has drawn a TON of DPI in these scenarios.. would like to see us send Lloyd vertically in some of these situations as well and see what happens. I am wondering if we won’t see a few of the younger WRs now that we’re into the last 4 games of the year to try to take advantage of some of this… will a guy like Malachi Coleman be able to come in and run 9 routes for contested catches in November while maintaining a redshirt?

I agree with most of what was said above as well. I think a lot of us need to take a step back when the game is over and realize we have a 5 Star True Freshman starting. Sure he misses some throws (every QB ever has) but he’s going to continue to develop. Raiola and Rhule have actually showed us promise for the future.Agree mostly. We just weren't quite ready to win that game.
Mozzee doesn't need to be an AC. Get a guy who people want to coach them. Everybody will be paying players, so you need a coach who knows his stuff. We can have essentially the biggest staff we can afford and everyone can help in practice. No need to put Mozzee in an AC spot.Let's put Mozzee at WR and move boy wonder to TE.
I think in reality Nebraska needs a larger assistant budget than currently allowed and larger than most power 5 teams. In the current set-up - paying players and large staffs - you can have a huge staff, guys focused on recruiting and who help who coach, ACs who are top notch coaches, developers and technicians who do not need to recruit, just relate as coaches. The 'salary' money sets the baseline in recruiting anyway. Kids in P4 will be looking mostly at which school out of the one who can pay will get them to the NFL. So, coaching and facilities count a lot. There is no need to find an AC job to dump a guy into anymore.
Yup… there is still lots to improve on don’t get me wrong. The amount of times Raiola had to tell people where to line up, the procedural penalties, still some mind boggling play call sequences and lack of creativity in the run game stand out.The more I wondered from yesterday, the more it seemed like playcalling improved a little from what we've seen before. Some sets looked bad, but others, we looked good. We did get down the field and put points up, with field goals. And we did that against an Ohio State defense on their home ground after a bye week.
With that said, I think we were limited by the playbook that we have in play and the offensive schemes.
Even if Glenn Thomas was calling plays, we're still operating in a playbook that isn't giving our offensive line, QB, WRs, TEs, and RBs the plays they need to make plays.
Would love it. Have a hard time seeing him leaving a HC gig after 1 year tho.
Huh?He might work out long run. What does a TE coach do that can't be covered by the oline/wr coaches?
Cockeye’s defense is better than Ohio State’s I thinkYup… there is still lots to improve on don’t get me wrong. The amount of times Raiola had to tell people where to line up, the procedural penalties, still some mind boggling play call sequences and lack of creativity in the run game stand out.
But frankly the second half we had our chances and moved the ball. Ohio State had the #1 scoring defense giving up 11ppg coming into yesterday and we’re 2 missed throws from having put up 31 on them. Need to just keep working and keep improving, we won’t see another defense as good as the 3 we’ve played the last 3 games the remainder of the season.
The RB rotation drives me crazy. Feed Dowdell!! 2 straight 14-yards gains, and we take him out. He needs 20 carries a game, not 12-14. He seems to get better as the game goes along.I actually don’t think Satterfield is the primary reason Nebraska lost this game the more I’ve settled down/upon re-watch. I would offer Indianus's OC $2M and anything he wants.I’d like to go the G5 HC route - hire Joe Moorhead or Tyson Helton
Here’s a good list of candidates. Hire any of these guys but Brennan Marion and you’ll get more out of Raiola
Joe Jon Finley, Brennan Marion, other candidates to replace Seth Littrell as Oklahoma Sooners offensive coordinator
Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator Seth Littrell was fired on Sunday after eight games as the Sooners’ play caller.www.oudaily.com
He’s makes a pretty good salary and is fairly young. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the succession plan for whenever the wrinkly old ballsack dude retires. He’s never left his sideI would offer Indianus's OC $2M and anything he wants.
