McKewon: 2023 NU FB has one of weakest rosters I've seen at Nebraska

You’ll see that when that former walkon played well for Syracuse that their success tended to correlate. I’m assuming you can make that deduction. Going a step further you’ll also see that in the games in which Syracuse played well enough to win defensively the Moneyball number for Kevon appeared to be 4 solo tackles and 1 assisted ones. He played out of his mind against Clemson and as fate would have it Syracuse had a shot to win that one.

I appreciate that you pointed out that the short and small walkon is physically limited yet Tony White’s system around him appeared to allow them to win more games than they lost and had them play well enough in 10 of those games to win.

We’re not going to use any intangible metrics here. So you saying “Yeah 7-5 in the ACC is like 5-7 in the Big Ten” can’t really be measured. So it proves nothing. Let alone the fact that Syracuse’s defense played two big ten teams last year and didn’t allow more than 77 rush yards against them in either game.

Syracuse averaged 240 pounds across their front 7. Yet two big ten teams couldn’t muster over 150 rush yards on offense collectively against them. Minnesota outweighed them by about 60 pounds per man.

With what White has done with physically limited players against Big Ten competition; is it really that big of a stretch to say that one of our more physically put together guys can do well in White’s system with what he’ll be asked to do? All we need from him to win more games than we lose is about 35 total tackles. Not solo, just total tackles. He doesn’t have to sack the QB and he doesn’t have to get TFLs. For Nebraska to be good on defense Nash has to have that many tackles total.
The original argument was you calling me out asking me why i thought Nash wasn’t a good player. I laid it all out for you and now you are rambling to me about Syracuse’s great 7-5 season last year. You have yet to tell me one thing you like about Nash’s game or why he’s a good player. Do you think he is a good player or not?

The point you are trying to make is that Nash doesn’t have to be great for us to win football games… but that wasnt the argument. What do you like about Nash’s game?

Also, wow, if Syracuse can have a winning season and dominate big ten teams with a 240 lb front then we will probably be Big Ten champs this year now that Tony White has some big boys to work with right?

What you just said makes you sound pretty bullish on tony white and this defense. I know you’re bullish on Nash you always have been. I’m hoping you are correct we’ll revisit this later in the season.

The thing concerning me with Sims is his ball security. Guys that fumble piss me off and need a Shrek clap.
last year in 432 snaps (188 pass attempts) he had two fumbles, only one lost, and 3 INTs. His turnovers were early in his career

Freshmen year 13 INTs, 5 fumbles lost on 10 fumbles
Soph year 7 INTs. 2 fumbles lost on 5 fumbles
Junior year 3 INTs, 1 fumble lost on 2 fumbles

Malachi Coleman is going to be a matchup nightmare. He’s just going to be a freshman(obviously) so there will be obvious growing pains but once it clicks look out
Honestly it's Betts that has the talent to be that guy. But he's never been that guy and didn't play last year.

I think Betts is in for a good year. As far as the matchup that’s scares DC against their corners, that would be 6’4/6’5 Coleman with track speed. IMO

Call it what you’d like but the fact is Tony White’s front 7 last year averaged 238 pounds per man and didn’t have a single guy over 270 yet they found a way to hold two big ten teams under 80 yards rushing per game. I think his scheme has a way of clogging up some of the short to intermediate passing game and making the other teams’ running game predictable.

Nash had flashes of being a good player last year as did Robinson. Shoot, once Chin was gone it really appeared a lot of guys came along and Gunnerson is another guy in that category that got better last year.

I’ve grown accustomed to watching DL show all of the physical tools to be good but not really show up until their 3rd or 4th year here. I’m not sure Nash will be any different than that.

I worry about the offensive design and if there is a receiver on the team that scares any DB coach in the Big 10.

But I also get paid a stipend to coach 2A football in Kansas while these guys get paid millions to coach at the University of Nebraska, so what the fuck do I know?
There's 4 guys I can think of on offense who have the physical ability to scare a defense, and all 3 are complete wildcards at this point

in order of most to least likely to be the real deal:
Fidone - has everything you want in a TE, just needs to stay healthy
Betts - needs to show he can be consistent
Coleman - crazy measurables, but needs to earn a role
Gilbert - I don't think his waiver will be approved, so this is more of a hypothetical

Kemp. I think the kid is a gamer. Quick and physical. He’ll be a real asset I think.

I'd add Ervin to that Unproven group as well.

So basically all of these are unknowns:
  • starting QB
  • starting RB
  • starting WR (wide, not slot)
  • starting TE
  • starting LT
Those, along with C and slot WR are probably the 7 most important roles on offense and 5 of ours are unknown. It's obviously not an ideal situation but we can't assume that all 5 players are going to be terrible - I think saying that isn't really an honest way to do this.

I do want to make the point that this "unknown roster" thing is only going to be more and more prevalent. That MSU team in 2021 probably looked very unknown in July before their season ....but they ended going 11-2. So just because you have unknowns doesn't mean it's inherently a weak roster. It might turn out that way, but really hard to know in July before the season.
ervin inst unproven. hes proven that hes not good. hes been here for 3 years. every once in awhile, you'll see a kid develop into a decent player by year 4, but those are more walkon types.

if a scholarship player hasnt popped in year 4, its not going to happen. next

brother he was hurt for the majority of his first year from a major injury and was probably not 100% healthy last year, so honestly a weird take.

edit: i'm taking last year's performances with a grain of salt, especially when it comes to the running game. once Frost was fired, Whipple had fuck all interest in running the ball.

I'm pretty that if you were survey 25 Power 5 Coaches who want a dual threat QB whether they would take Jeff Sims or Adrian Martinez, the majority of responses would be in favor of Adrian.
Think Tim Robinson GIF by NETFLIX

I don't think Adrian has a lot of admirers left in the coaching ranks. Maybe PRE KSU. But once we saw that he was exactly the same flawed QB at KSU that he was at NU that did it for most. And then when Adrian got benched for a younger QB that was the nail in the coffin.

I think Sims will be a better game manager than Adrian was. KSU tried to make Adrian into one but they actually lost at home to Tulane doing that. The guy was just incapable of being a competent, chill game-manager QB.

why don't you think Gilbert won't get it? There are only a couple circumstances left that allow for a waiver, and he seems to fit one of them.

If you all are asking me whether I will take Will Howard, Adrian Martinez, or Jeff Sims, I'm taking Will Howard. But I'm taking Sims last.

Look I want to believe, but I've watched a whole lot of Georgia Tech games. Sims is just fucking dumb man with the football. He looks like he could play the game like Robert Griffin III, but half the time he plays the game like Peter Griffin,

- Jeff Sins will be the worst day one starting QB of the last 20 years.

- linebackers need career back ups like Sherman and Borders to even reach below average status. Bullock is a nice story, but he's going to start next to Reimer. 2 best linebackers are former walk ons.

- Two true Freshmen are needed to start on the defensive line. I like Prince, but he's going to get killed vs. Minnesota.

- Interior DLine has game experience, but they've never stopped the run before.

- Nate Boerkicher is your starting TE.

- Gabe Irvin is incredibly overrated

- And the offensive line is one of the worst units in the Power 5.

Btw, Gilbert isn't going to get his waiver. The NCAA has set a pretty strict precedent so far this Summer about denying waivers for two time transfers.

I think the Panda isn't too far off in this assessment.
I am now going to bet on Sims being B1G Offensive POY and go heavy on the w/l over

This thread has gotten me really excited.

My only hesitation is that @Cornicator knows his streak of terrible predictions and is trying to trick fate by not expressing his real thoughts. I don't think it works that way though.
