Marcus Satterfield - Who is he?

I’ve been on a couple teams where players lose faith in what’s being taught/emphasized/scheme & are simply going thru the motions & that’s the vibe I got yesterday.
I think this vibe was palpable at Memorial Stadium yesterday and probably so strong you could feel it in Scottsbluff.

This is the #1 reason I believe Rhule will move on from Satterfield. When the offense is so bad it is actually destroying players' will and motivation...then you get performances like you saw against UCLAbia. And then you know you absolutely have to make a change.

He wants to coach, I agree. That doesn’t mean he has the urgency needed for this job. He’s fat and happy and what happens at Nebraska means little to his future in the grand scheme of things.

He has 0 pressure to make necessary changes to win and it’s obvious he doesn’t have a clue what to do anyway. If he did, he wouldn’t have started with this abortion of a staff. He would’ve have hand picked Jeff Simms as his QB. He wouldn’t constantly clamor for this NFL model or make remarks that oh gee, it’s the Big Ten, every game is going to be close. The games are close because we fucking suck not because the league is some juggernaut.

I’ve got no idea where anyone is getting this idea he’s under no pressure to perform.

There were plenty of times yesterday and the TV commentators mentioned how DR missed people wide open or just didn’t flat out throw it. Satt and Rhule need to point this out to DR or bench him because DR is becoming a liability on the field. Additionally, if DR is the master of practice but sucks when things go live, then Rhule needs to reevaluate who’s on the scout team to give the 1s a better look. To me, DRs problems are a result of poor preparation

Announcers are generally morons and they don’t know shit.

There were multiple times they pointed out people Dylan “missed” and then you look at it and realize the throw they’re asking him to make simply isn’t there.

The large opportunity that was missed was Bullock on the sprint out on 4th and goal; he’s “setting the pick and suppose to roll back to the middle of the field. He doesn’t. He rolls back to the corner with his defender and we have what we have on 4th down.

The play was there and our 12th year senior Alex Bullock messed it up.

I think two things can be true. Early in the season when we were playing teams who didn’t know what to expect, we had guys open and DR was finding them.

Now, the book has been written on Satterfields offense. There were red flags in the second halves early this year that teams were able to put a pin on what Satt was calling and adjust. Then Indianus completely outed him as a fraud.

DR makes some freshman mistakes when things tighten up. Puckers up. Loses faith that Satt is going to call anything that he can work with. Now you see DR indecisive and not trusting his arm or eyes.

To me, that’s not on your freshman QB. That’s on your top ten paid OC for not putting him in position to be successful.

Hopefully Satt hasn’t done so much damage to his confidence that he transfers or never recovers mentally. We’ll see.

A lot of it falls on Satterfield, but Raiola can’t be throwing a pick 6 out of halftime like yesterday. He has been holding onto the ball too long missing hot routes and open receivers for big plays in the last few games. If he is money in the OSU game we win.

He's a true freshman. He's absolutely shook. He's lost confidence in the play calling and scheming. His receivers are not playing with enough urgency. He's not seasoned at all in P4 CFB, there is always a steep learning curve for a true frosh QB.

DR doesn't even get his feet set much at all anymore. He's got happy feet because he expects pressure and to have to be creative. But this goes against one of the main principles of being a good QB - you have to trust you blocking to a certain extent, while also using peripheral vision and keep tabs on an edge rusher bearing down. Being a QB isn't easy. Being a good or great one is tougher. Throwing off your base seriously deliniates from good consistent QB play. Sure, it is great if he can Mahome's it up when needed, but at this point he rarely has his feet set and his mechanics in line.

All of this boils down to coaching, really. Not just QB coaching, but offensive play calling/scheming, receivers running crisp routes, and the QB trusting the receivers to be at their spots at the designed (right) time. You can't have confidence to throw to a spot where the receiver is supposed to be, make that throw before the receiver has even turned his head or completed his route (DR was throwing to spots very well earlier in the season - so he knows this and CAN do it). Since opposing defenses now have the book on how to stifle DR and the Shitterfield offense, it makes it VERY tough on a now shook, true frosh QB, to settle into being comfortable.

Shitterfield needs to go. At the very least once the season is done, but for the last 3 games, since Satt can't dial up an offensive scheme worth a shit, hand the play calling keys to someone else (who would almost certainly be Thomas).

Raiola might want to transfer then. Glen Thomas another Rhule guy isn’t getting it done either if it’s all on the coaches.

This-along with everything else in the article-hit the nail on the head:

"Worse than the numbers were the frequent looks of befuddlement by Raiola. He appeared to be what he is: a freshman going through on-the-job training with a questionable supporting cast and an unimaginative coordinator with no logic in his play calling.

It is difficult enough for a freshman quarterback to succeed in the Big Ten. But when he lacks a coherent offensive blueprint built around the reality of the roster, it is hopeless and damaging."

For only the rest of this season, if Thomas calls the plays, that's all you can expect. Not like they will hire a new OC with 3 games left.

I think Thomas just taking over as OC long term is a bad idea. Rhule needs to go outside of this staff to fill the future OC role, and it absolutely has to be a very good hire. And also one with the idea of DR still being our QB.

Yeah I don’t always agree with Farrell. But this article is dead on. Satterfield will ruin a 5 star qb if he continues. Get rid of him before permanent damage is done. Dylan can work with his own coaches in the offseason to restore his confidence and mechanics.

I don't know if anyone's brought this is or not, but why the hell did Turd allow Rhule to hire all the no-names? It's not like he hasn't been around the game? Just sayin'!
If I had to guess it’s probably because Rhule wouldn’t have come here if that was a stipulation. Buddy hires have arguably sank 4 of the last 5 head coaches. (I’m including this one, it’s already too late.)

Will we ever learn?

No we are fucking retarded

I’m all for it.

There are hundreds of good schemes we could run. We chose to employ none of them and run what you see now.
I'm of the opinion that until a staff comes in and doesn't cater to this idea that Nebraska is somehow special, and we need to do stuff a certain way here to win...I think they fail.

"We need a fullback"

"We need to play this way because of the wind"

"We need to play this way because of the B1G"

Shit's exhausting. Run what the hell you want to run.

You forgot about going in and making the walk on program a game changer when it’s really a drain on the program.

Completely agree.

That being said, we would be smart to utilize some under center snaps. And we can use a fullback - just not like it used to be used in a traditional I formation way. I am thinking along the lines of how the Niners use their fullback - in a multiple design. I know it is wishful thinking with Satt, but a heady different OC could snag some of that concept. A FB/TE/RB hybrid. Gotta have the right player who can do all those things as a "fullback", though. Think a TE that also plays "fullback" at times.

But overall, the idea of catering to how "Nebraska" "should" play on offense needs to be flushed.

I agree. I think Raiola has the potential and we have seen glimpses, but I’ve seen plenty of 5 stars not live up to the hype when it’s all said and done. I know Satterfield sucks, but I also think people are prematurely putting their eggs all into one basket thinking Raiola is the savior. Coaching does definitely matter though. A guy like Jared Goff who I’m watching right now is a good example of that.

I hate the idea of trying to be multiple like the 49ers. We don't have personnel like that. Nor will we. Why not actually having a system. Maybe have an identity run or two, that actually is consistent. I'd much rather be an 11/12 personnel gun team. That's just my preference.

We pretty much run about 1 run scheme right now. Then in short yardage, we line up and run power and do pretty well. We've ran counter a few times this year with success. Hell, we even ran a couple pin and pulls vs Illinois that popped for 8+ each time. But we never see it again. We just beat our brains in to death running duo...over and over...and over and over again. I'd love to see our YPC running the ball for each scheme they run.
