How would you fix college football?

It'll never happen, but CFB needs a relegation system. Split current FBS into two tiers. Best teams in the second-tier league get promoted to the top league, worst teams in the top league get demoted.

1) Get rid of NIL, schools pay players directly and contracts are signed. Salary cap and floor.

2) Two premier conferences w/ 16 teams each. Teams can be promoted to the premier conferences or relegated to lower divisions/conferences.

3) playoffs determined only by w/l. No more stupid fucking committees.

I think that’s way too simplistic. My point is mostly that there seems to be a past version of the sport and an inevitable future of the sport, and right now we’re stuck in a middle ground where nothing quite fits right.

Conference realignment is here to stay, but it’s absurd to pretend they’re still “conferences” the way they used to be. Paying players has been a looong time coming, but it’s absurd to do this phony NIL system where everyone pretends it’s not pay for play and there’s no transparency or regulation. People wanted a playoff because polls relied on a group of voters, well now we have a playoff and it’s…also decided by an even smaller group of voters!

That’s the kind of stuff that people roll their eyes at. The sport has become a weird choose-your-own-adventure book where there is no clear plot haha.

So let me be clear…

I wasn’t talking about you or anyone in this thread. What I meant as I typed is that the average person I hear from off the board that says it’s in shambles generally sites NIL and conference realignment as reasons.

There are more people watching now than ever before. So something is certainly going right.

In regards to NIL; I’m not sure what anyone wants to do in terms of regulations. This isn’t anywhere close to being something that you can put a salary cap on as this is more like an athlete’s endorsement deals than it is the franchise paying him. Even if you reimagine paying players, NIL is still going to be there and it’s essentially something you can’t regulate.

A twelve team playoff makes a ton of sense to me as you certainly will still get voters deciding it, but you’ll be able to look at the teams that missed that likely have 3-4 losses and see exactly why they missed.

See I’m not sure you’re going to get rid of NIL. Even if you make them paid by the school you’ll still have opportunities for them to make endorsement deals off the field. Which is essentially what NIL is. Or at least what it’s meant to be.

Okay, you want to opt out of a bowl game? Cool, here’s what we need from you…

1. We need your tuition for this academic year paid back to us in full. You’re on scholarship to play football and you’ll need to finish that commitment for us to honor that scholarship. Scholarships are on a year-by-year basis so we aren’t looking for anything prior to this season.

2. We need you to pay back room and board, books, and your meal plan for being a football player. Once again, we paid these things with the agreement that you’d play college football for us. That includes all scheduled practices and games.

3. We’d like for you to refund a portion of your NIL payments to the sponsors who supported you. We don’t require you to pay the whole thing back as Name, Image, and Likeness are outside the athletic department and this can be negotiated with each sponsor. However, for us to continue to have a good relationship with our collective they need to be made whole if you’re not going to honor your full commitment as others that follow you may be impacted by your decision to opt out.

4. You’ll be billed a percentage of the bowl tickets purchased by our fans. We’re not asking for anything near the full amount and we won’t hold you accountable for their travel expenses and other details, but we feel they do deserve some compensation for their purchase of tickets to see you play.

5. And finally, we won’t be paying for your travel to our bowl game, you won’t be allowed on the sidelines even if you pay your own way and you won’t be getting any of the gifts/perks from our bowl sponsor. This is all for bowl participants only.

6. All tutoring, strength and conditioning, nutritional advice, and physical and mental health services are on us. Thanks.

I’m talking about the structure of the sport, how the postseason works, how crowning a champion works, how paying players works, how conferences work, how to honor traditions and quirks that made CFB unique for all those years, player movement, coach movement, gimme your best shot at how YOU would structure the sport.

And be real about it! It seems like tons of people agree that CFB is kind of in shambles right now, and yet the money/tv ratings/etc. give the powers-that-be no reason to change anything…

To me it seems like some kind of grand pause button is needed to get everything straightened out for the future of the sport, so if YOU were in charge, how would it all work?
The only way forward is back. No one has ever been able to give a real problem with the Pre-BCS set up. Coaches decide it. The ONLY comment against that is that the powers that be didn't always have what felt like their "Super Bowl" singular game deciding your champion.

But outside of maybe 3 years, the champion named by the coaches wasn't even DEBATED let alone questioned.

But I don't think there's any fixing. It is what it is and it's going where it's going. You can go "back" and still add teams to the playoff. Shorten the regular season schedule, crossover earlier, play 2 home hosted, then use the bowl season to play out your quarters-finals.

Yeah, but I think a lot of what happened in the Orange Bowl was premeditated. There was a lot of talk about FSU just boycotting the bowl game all together. Plus this article has hawt takes that could alleviate the max exodus after the regular season to the portal. Maybe there needs to be straight up contracts similar to the NFL when you commit, you are there for a set number of years to get your NIl and etc and have clauses to transfer such as a coach gets fired. These kids want to be treated like adults, but there needs to a stop to the number of times a player can transfer or when they can transfer.

The TV studios will more than likely be the biggest push to get anything done with bowl games and players opting out.

Fox and ESPN? If they feel like players opting out are hurting their ratings for the bowl games, then I guarantee they will get in the ears of the NFL.

How to fix College Football? I'm not sure. But I do believe there are some big governing bodies trying to figure out how to maximize the potential of money brought in and how they can turn this into a minor league of football.

My co-worker has a wild idea that he would love to see.

B1G collects as many teams as possible. They press on the Rose Bowl to reinvigorate their exclusivity. Play their conference championship at the Rose Bowl January 1 and recognize them as the newly formed entity's National Champion. Say "F" the SEC - let them have their own title and say good luck with their TV Markets.

His point was, we will see who the majority of the country cares about most, and he'd gamble every day of the week that it was the B1G. Which would basically be everyone but the SEC. It would start by us getting FSU, Clemson, UNC, and any other worthy ACC programs in the fold as they (hopefully and likely) crumble. Get a deal in place of Football only combining with the Big12. Boom. It's done.

Practicality of that happening - very low. Awesomeness if that did happen - VERY high.
