Made an effort this morning, but bailed after 3 hours. It took a looooong hot shower when I got home to get the chill out of the bones, and I was wearing some good warm weather gear. Something about sitting still for that length of time in 20 degree temps, then the sun (and the dadburned wind) came up. I'll try it again after the weekend.

What crossbow do you have? We sell them at the sporting goods store I work part time at.

A piece of shit (CenterPoint Tormentor Whisper Compound Crossbow 380) that I bought on Woot! several years ago for $220. It spits bolts where I want them to go, tho, but that trigger sucks BIGLY. I may - or may not - be spoiled as I'm used to the trigger on a 1911 pistol, and I think this crossbow kicks worse than a .45 ACP.

Your string looks a little rough there on the left side.

A redneck blind, heater, comfy chair and coffee/beer helps with the problems that you mentioned.

I noticed that when I got home. May have to drop it off at Scheels and buy a spear instead. Honest to Pete I about fell out of my chair when I was reviewing the legal ways to kill a deer in Nebraska and saw "Spear" on the list. That's savage AF.

Also, public hunting land problems. I've got a Heater Buddy, but didn't want to haul the ground blind along today. Just a chair and a spot where I THOUGHT they'd be crossing ... because they usually cross right there.

Are those things good for about 30 yards?

In my hands, yes. I think someone who's more experienced with them and/or had a higher-velocity model could stretch it out a bit further. As I'm not an archer, my "sense" of it is it should be good for the same range as a bow & arrow should.

I'll say this about the crossbow vs. a compound bow: the crossbow delivers a bolt seemingly much faster than a compound bow delivers an arrow. That's my anecdotal, side-by-side comparison at an outdoor range this summer. My son and his buddy - both compound bow hunters - responded with "holy shit - that thing's FAST" when I fired my first bolt at the target. Sumbitch blew threw the target and shredded a couple of fletchings right off the bolt, too.

And I realize this is a one-size-fits-all observation and there are undoubtedly compound bows that fling an arrow faster than my piece of shit crossbow spits a bolt, but its the only comparison I have so ... there it is.

If I had as much money as @Jim14510 or @God is a Husker, what crossbow should I be putting on my (self-purchased) Christmas list?

Knew a guy once who would shoot deer with FMJ bullets during archery season then shoot them with a crossbow close range that would blow a bigger hole through the body so if he ever got asked by game and parks he would show them the bloody bolt usually with some hair/etc on it too.

Not sure how many of you follow professional bass fishing, but looks like HCMR sent a signed football to Ben Milliken who’s originally from Omaha and wears a 402 fishing jersey and a Cornhusker ball cap.

Damn, professional bait Fisher gets a MFHCMR signed ball.

Maybe I should invite MFHCMR out for a Hali trip?

cliffs version: thread of somone using a .556 w/ green polymer tip, misses and hits back right shoulder/femur of elk. Elk walks around for a few months wasting away with essentially no back right leg.

Federal politicians and the media told me that a 5.56 is like shooting a bazooka and a weapon of war that people don't even use to hunt deer because it would "blow them away" so obviously this Elk was shot with something else because I trust the media and federal officials from blue states.
