Yard Care

I mean, you can see early renaissance paintings of lawns. It's been the norm here on the plains and prairie as long as there have been recorded people setting up permanent dwellings.

Local grasses and trees are what grows naturally pretty much everywhere- gardens you have to create and cultivate. History of grassy lawns probably goes back to close to the first humans.
I am not sure what WNC's native grass is. I spend less time with gardening, and less money than friends of mine that want good looking grass yards. My "grass" is clover, crabgrass, and some other sedges. I'll need to overseed this fall to try to get it filled with grass and since I don't want to use any chemicals in yard I'm not sure how to combat the weeds. Anyone with organic weed or pre emergent tips please let me know. I don't have much grass, but would rather it be grass in those spots than weeds.

Anyone else overseed this weekend? Did a good low mow, dethatch and then overseed with a Kentucky Bluegrass/fescue mix yesterday. Making sure to get water on it 3-4 times a day for the next couple weeks.
Going to aerate in next weekend and then doing it.

Overseeding with estate mix from the grass pad

Took over a rough yard almost 3 years ago and this was the first year it started looking good..... my front yard was a salad bar, my backyard was bare, etc...... Now we are getting stripes and dark green.

I've used Heat Wave the last two years with pretty good results. The month of August just took its toll though. You think yours would be a better option than Heat Wave? I think we both live in the same general areas? Was planning on aerating and overseeding about a month from now.

Rented a dethatcher & did that for the first time ever. Holy hay bales.

Yard has been inconsistent over the last year with some contractor work & moving stuff in our back yard, and a few patches where the crabgrass went crazy. Did the lower mow & dethatched to prep things, gonna get some seed down tonight - we have some very shady areas & some very sun-baked areas, so gonna use different seed mixtures in different spots.

Key will be trying to keep the kids from running roughshod over it for long enough that things can get established & convincing my wife that being a little bit of a psycho about it up front will mean we can go back to regular use, instead of repeating this song & dance patch by patch.

Mine will struggle without enough water....They recommended heat wave, but I wanted KBG so they said Estate Mix was the next best.

That Turf-Type Tall Fescue should be better in the summer.

I will say I watered mine with my Rachio system and absolutely love that thing (@alt f4).

I also use a moisture control and I think this helped....supposedly it helps the grass maintain water better. It claims you can reduce watering by 50% or somehting but I watered the same and figured it would help the plant keep up.

How critical is watering it more than daily? Considering doing the same thing but don't have a sprinkler system so not going to be able to water it more than once a day in the evenings

The way I look at it...... grass was here before sprinkler systems.

Now best practices is more is better, but still.

I gotcha. Heat Wave might just be a better option for mine. The way yard sits, when it gets real hot in late July and August, it just gets too dry regardless of my watering pattern. Don't want to drive up the bill so I don't get too wild if I need to increase it, but the sun just does what it does. I have trees on the border of my front and back yard by the sidwalks as well that I can't get anything to grow under, and it seems like the acid from the trees combined with the dryness from last month did a little extra this year. I was lazy with the weed spraying along the sidewalks this year so just looking forward to getting another shot at it next year at this point I suppose.

I use Macho Mix from GrassPad...results are good for my lawn. I have both shade and full sun areas. Zoysia is spreading like wildfire in the full sun areas and I'm okay with it.

Typically, I will aerate and seed as late in the year as possible, overseed, water and wait for the snow to cover the seed for the winter. Spring comes and baby grasses pop up like crazy.

Ground has to remain wet for grass seeds to germinate.

My backyard is finally looking decent after a 5 year battle. New build with sod in May 2020 that was over a foot tall before I moved in and could mow the first time. First year it was 50% grass 50% crab grass and other weeds. Dethatched it and overseededblast year had it on a comeback.

Put in a patio which caused me to get my sprinkler system reconfigured. The system before was designed by total retards, Millard sprinkler. Quality irrigation did it the 2nd time and it’s so much better. Original system was heads all around the permitter either going 180 or 90 degrees with two heads in the middle going 360 degrees. My yard was either under watered where the heads were going 360 or over watered by the heads going 180 or 90. Only a complete moron would think that was a good idea. The builder did it on a spec home so had no say.

Any idea how to get rid of bindweed? My lawn is only about a year old. New development next to a field. Everyone in the neighborhood has it. It's pretty bad.

I spend a lot of time pulling it and trying different types of sprays without destroying my lawn. Nothing works. I know the root system is significant and it's a huge pain. Hoping for a hack.

I'm planning to overseed parts of my yard later this month. A few areas that I seeded a couple years ago didn't take too well and are now mostly weeds. Gonna spray mesotrione + triclopyr in the next few days (should've done it a week or two ago), then put down a tall fescue + kentucky bluegrass blend.
