Your confidence level in Rhule after season 1?

Yes I have been an avid fan since the 90’s, was at the NC game in the 95, parents have been fans + going to games since the 70’s.

If 7-5 and 8-4 is good, count me out because to me that’s a disgrace and a 💩 record IMO.

The ceiling for this program is immediately beneath the first tier of the big ten, which includes Biff's Butthole Surfers, Ohio State, and Oregon. These are the only three programs in the conference that are built to win a playoff game in the four team format.

Cockeye, Washington, USC, UCLA, and Penn State are in the tier below. If the schedule breaks right and you have a great QB you can sneak into the playoff, but you won’t win. If we hadn’t mismanaged literally everything since 2013 I think we’re here.

Didn’t Rhule go with all young guys at his prior stops? If I remember correctly he said Nebraska was a lot different with their experience and talent level.

There were barely any seniors/non-returnees on the 2-deep at the end of the year.

Bo’s biggest issue is was recruiting, but his game management was solid because he coached the game as a defensive coach. Any points were a premium to him.

We didn’t do the following to be AVERAGE:

- Best facilities in all of CFB (according to reports).

- $450 million stadium renovations (more than likely $600 million or so according to reports), which will be some of the nicest in all the land.

- Top 10-15 paid HC coach.

- Top 10 paid OC.

- Soon to be top 10 paid DC.

Correct, program-wise. Flip the one score losses and it’s probably not a difficult thing to argue. If we had hired Whittingham instead of Mike Riley we’d probably be in Indy next weekend. I wouldn’t say the program would be in much better shape now if that were the case, which is a good thing

One-score losses aren’t an indictment of institutional commitment or potential so I don’t think they lower your ceiling if that makes sense. It became a statistical outlier like two years ago

Hey you won’t see me telling you you’re wrong, we’ve been 🐶 💩 for years now. But as a program we have MUCH more financial support for FB, tons more history, better recruiting. Where we’ve lacked is coaching, player development, and player retention IMO.

What do you mean “good enough”? Rhule shouldn’t be fired if that’s the floor/baseline. At some point we have to stop making the same mistake over and over.

Football is a sport where shit can go wrong and lose you a game completely outside of your control. If the most unlucky season you’ve ever seen results in 8-4 then your program is in fantastic shape.

2024-and-on is completely different. 9-3 will be very hard to get to for most programs.

Okay but the money has nothing to do with it. He is just taking up a seat where a good OC should be sitting right now. Doesn’t really matter if he’s making $250k or $2m.

I’m not sure I agree with that. He had quite a bit of talent on the roster and his teams got pounded by anyone remotely similar in talent. He also inherited a roster with incredible talent on it and never had to build anything.

When you’re rebuilding a team, the margin for error is so small. All of that is relevant with how you make decisions and manage a game. Then factor in a ton of injuries.

I don’t want to derail the thread talking about Bo Pelini but I think he would’ve been awful if put in the same situation.

To circle back around, I DO think there’s a lot of room for improvement on Rhule’s clock management. I just don’t think Pelini could do better.
