Put more time and effort into Nebraska this year than probably any time in the last decade. I went from knowing we would be perpetually 5-7 to joining the HES this year. I spent my fall saturdays doing other things many times over the last 9-10 years, but made a point to watch every game this season.

I’ve been duped. I bought into Matt Rhule and this staff. I was fooled. Same old same old. Shame on me. Big shame on me.

Football had gotten not fun anymore, so I took a step back. I hoped it’d be fun again this year. By and large, in the games that mattered, it wasn’t.

Definitely need to re-evaluate my give a damn again for next year. This is sad.

I was thinking earlier, is this program even capable of reaching a level that could make all the pain it has caused us worth it? Maybe we luck into one playoff in the next 50 years. Is that worth all the misery they cause us?

For me it’s about expectations. I’ve long since come to grips with the fact the 90s are gone.

I’ve come to grips with our overall university leadership and the old guard donors will always screw the pooch for us. Too many cooks in the kitchen who all want different things.

I’ve long since come to grips that whenever we will be successful it will come from a reasonably long culture change. I believe our program rot went to the core and foundation. It won’t ever be a quick turn…and there is absolutely zero patience in Husker nation. Don’t get me started on the PTSD, insecure, and self entitled who only make it worse.

I passionately believe until T.O. Passes along with the self entitled olds money people who want their fingers in everything, we won’t return to glory.

Yes, I do expect us to return. I have just re-aligned my expectations to whenever that return is, it will be a grind.

At the beginning of the season I figured we’d achieve 8-4 and if we did, I’d be wildly happy. If we finished 7-5, disappointed, but not surprised.

We go to back to back bowls, we are the youngest team in the B1G, ideally Rhule continues to make the changes required as he’s shown the propensity to do, we keep adjusting to NIL, and we see incremental change/improvement.

We’re so far off with NIL spending. It’s sickening but Ole Miss is paying their starting DL $1mm+ per year. How much do you think we have funded in NIL into our DL as an example? I doubt $1mm for the whole DL. If we don’t fix this then it doesn’t matter what staff we have here.

But Cockeye doesn’t spend that. And they eat our lunch every year. We can’t even get to Cockeye levels, let alone competing for the CFP.

Cockeye has competent coaching, an established system, and player buy in.

They recruit low level players, coach them up and plug and play with them.

You won’t see much of anything like them again in the current CFB landscape. When Kirk retires the system falls apart.
