Talked to a booster…

Stoops is a good coach, but it doesn't look like he has the fire any more. It looked that way his last few years at OU, too. Combine that with his dad dying on the sidelines and there's no way he comes out of retirement.

The time to hire Stoops was 1998 and TO fucked that up
In reality if change happens Mark Stoops is who realistically could be the guy
Does that excite me? Not really

I have a bad feeling that this next hire will shatter a lot of peoples' illusions about NU's place in the college football world. Doesn't mean we can't get an upgrade, but I'll be absolutely shocked if we end up with anybody in the current top-tier.
It’s not going to take much to be an upgrade over what’s going on right now. Even the much maligned Mike Riley never had more than two losing seasons in a row at Oregon St.

Yet no matter what Frost does he is still a better coach than Riley. Both are shit. Riley is better.

no chance he leaves Kentucky. They pay him, and he has essentially zero pressure there. H is level of expectations are basically that he be better than Vandy, and he has a pretty good thing going.

Stoops was going to coach again in the XFL before it collapsed due to COVID. He still wants to coach, just not sure at the college level. He was going to have complete control in XFL and not sure he would get that in college?

Hard to know right now who would be a lateral move for 4 losing seasons. Frost is unlikely to even get a dead cat bounce at the end of the year to make people think he might not be total shit
Not to exaggerate too much but my worst fear in this whole thing is hiring another hot name, failing, and being right back where we are 3 years from now. I'm not saying keep Frost right now, I just don't care either way anymore.

Who really knows at this point. FWIW, the boosters that I know that would probably be shelling out a decent portion of his buyout thought his job was safe as of Saturday afternoon. Also heard the name Bill O'Brien being thrown around. Not a huge fan of the guy but he's coaching under Saban right now and it seems like everyone who goes to coach for Saban as a 'rehab' stint have pretty fucking good track records post-Bama.

O'Brien is one of the only coaches I'd take

Taggart would be the lateral move haha - I know no one is bringing him up - just answering the "who"

O'Brien makes a lot of sense to me. I could get behind that. Proven winner in the big ten and I think at a minimum we would really see a uptick in recruiting imo. Being with the Texans previously would help on the recruiting trail obviously.

I think Nebraska looks pretty appealing to the up and coming coordinator, G5 or lower P5 HC.

I mean worst case scenario you are looking at making a fuck ton of money. The roster is a lot better than what it was 4 years ago with roughly 70 some guys having 3+ years of eligibility next year. You are going to be leading the pack in terms of facilities. You are at a blue blood school.

I also think the drawback that everybody has about this job is becoming less and less of a drawback. Proximity to talent. I think kids are becoming more and more likely to get on a plane and go to school.

Yep, not only would recruits want to play for him, but I think he'd also be able to attract a really talented coaching staff.

That's interesting, I'd be interested in seeing some kind of stats about that. It makes sense to think with everyone being on tv/social media/etc that it would be more "globalized" but it FEELS like people are staying closer and closer to home, especially in the south, or at least less willing to go to what many see as a rural location. Maybe that's just in my imagination though haha.
