Targeting Rules

You can't just be out there and just do targeting like that.

1a. Targeting is when you

1b. Okay well listen. Targeting is when you target the

1c. Let me start over

1c-a. The defender is not allowed to do a hit to the, uh, runner, that prohibits the runner from doing, you know, just trying to not get concussed. You can't do that.

1c-b. Once the defender is making the tackle, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna lead with the crown of my helmet! You better watch your head or neck area!" and then just be like he actually did that.

1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to tackle and then lower your head, you have to still not. You cannot not tackle right. Does that make any sense?

1c-b(2). You gotta be, making a tackle right, and then, until you just tackle.

1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have your head up here, like this, but then there's the head or neck area you gotta think about.

1c-b(2)-b. Simon Target hasn't directed any movies in forever. I hope he wasn't typecast as someone who only makes documentaries for the ABC.

1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, he wrote books about jam too! That would be even worse.

1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. Targeting is when the defender makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the head and neck area and crown of

2) Do not target please.

There were a couple games I recall where I don’t think they ever punted.
Makes you realize how much we've actually improved overall the last couple years. And yes, I realize Frost played some close games - Michigan being one of those.

defenseless player, contact in the head or neck area, what am I missing here?

Get rid of the rule if that wasn’t targeting.

Picture perfect targeting

Would love to see the refs explanation to KD

I don't believe it was targeting. Helmet to helmet isn't always targeting.

There needs to be an indicator on for targeting of either lowering of the crown, crouch and launch, launch, etc. There wasn't any of those.

The real play of the game was selling out on the blitz when they should have played coverage or maybe just brought one extra guy.
I was talking to my brother on the phone during the play and I told him when they were showing blitz pre-play that they weren't going to get home and they would get burnt. It seemed very obvious from the couch. Then they made the lone safety decide and he hesitated on the crosser. He who hesitates....

It was a bad call with much more downside than upside.

God OSU must have been completely sleepwalking when they played us. We may never get an opportunity like that to steal a win from them again.
They were clearly looking past us to Penn State. Even the announcers pregame were talking about the game the following week.

The irony is that we should have given them the second of possibly three losses and then they would be pleading the SEC argument. They would have had a better case than Bama/SC/Ole Miss, but no team outside of a conference champ with 3 losses should be in the playoff imo... particularly 3 conference losses.

Texas has a good defense but I don't see them moving the ball on OSU.

OSU is confident and TX won't come out wearing Michigan uniforms. OSU wins this easily.

I don't even think it was targeting so I'll go with adding time.
Some Texass fan posted this pic at the end of the hit making it all look fine and dandy. I knew the comments would attack the man, so I clicked in, and the most liked reply was this angle from behind the play I hadn't seen. Clear drop of the head and crown leading. Super slowed down, I know, but damn they had replay to check it out.

Based on that angle and what we were taught, that is NOT the crown of the helmet. The crown is very top portion of the helmet. The biggest visual indicator of leading with the crown of the helmet, is if the player's facemask is pointing down at the ground.

This red area in this picture is the crown.

Which one do you see the crown leading?

Crown leading doesn't matter either way if it's defenseless receiver. Think that's only applicable if the receiver is not defenseless.
Correct. There's still metrics on the contact to the head like launching, etc. Don't think this fits the bill. Still do agree if this was Nebraska on defense they would have called it.

Incorrect, rule Targeting rule 9-1-4 is a 2-part rule.

Part 2 is satisfied because it's a defenseless player.

Part 1 also needs to be true in order for targeting and needs to be 'that goes beyond making a legal tackle'. Part 1 needs an indicator which includes a launch, crouch and thrust, or lowering of the head initiating contact with the crown of the helmet. None of these are true in this case.

The crown of the helmet is defined this in the rule book:
The crown of the helmet is the top segment of the helmet; namely, the circular area defined by a 6-inch radius from the apex (top) of the helmet.

Rule 9-1-4:
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player
ARTICLE 4
No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below) When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6) (A R 9-1-4-I-VI)

Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball

Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:
• Launch A player leaving their feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area
• A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground • Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area
• Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14) When in question, a player is defenseless Examples of defenseless players include but are not limited to:
• A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass This includes an offensive player in a passing posture with focus downfield
• A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect themselves or has not clearly become a ball carrier
• A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return • A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect themselves or has not clearly become a ball carrier
• A player on the ground
• A player obviously out of the play • A player who receives a blind-side block
• A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped
• A quarterback any time after a change of possession
• A ball carrier who has obviously given themselves up and is sliding feetfirst

I'd agree with this in prior seasons, but the BIG has really changed their approach to targeting this year and have really loosened up their threshold for the foul.

Note: This was a BIG crew on this game.

It did seem like they backed off a little now that you mention it. Seemed like any contact to the head of a defenseless player was targeting regardless of the details.
