Our rifle hunting trip in the Pine Ridge area was ruined by a moutain lion. We know they're in the area we always see tracks and ranchers mention their spooked cows.

I was up 3 weeks ago while dad was cow elk hunting and I bow hunted deer. During that trip I saw on average of 20-30 deer feeding in a 300 yard radius. Scouting last Thursday night and Friday morning/evening we stopped counting at 50 deer and saw 8 bucks on the 915 acre property. Weekend was pretty much a ghost town. One nice 4x4 buck wouldn't come into an opening and all the does were extremely skittish constantly alert and checking behind them. Only a handful came out to feed and most just ran across the fields south into the bluffs/hills, not their pattern. 5 of us hunting this area and only I came away with 2 does. Other group of 8 staying at the same ranch had 1 small 4x4 buck. Eerie how quiet it was Sat and Sun with not birds, no morning or evening coyote howls, turkeys off the area and nearly a mile away. We knew something was up.

As we left yesterday, we heard the hunters on adjacent property north of us had spotted fresh cat tracks Saturday morning in their footprints on the dirt road from their Friday scout. We saw 2 groups of 12-15 does on their land Thursday and Friday, over the weekend we didn't see a single deer over there.

Deer numbers and activity were the worst I’ve seen in southeast Nebraska. Wasn’t just this weekend though, has been that way this whole year.

2023 was down 28% vs 2022. Those who hunted in SE Nebraska this year said the this year was worse yet.

The land I hunt between Lincoln and Seward had one doe and one 1 1/2 old buck on camera in the last 30 days. Usually get a lot of activity.

I saw enough bucks to fill the back of my truck in SE nebraska. Got one 6 minutes into legal time that walked right up to me.

Must have got lucky

It is absolutely worse. I hunt or monitor/manage 740 acres across 3 different, very very good properties in southeast Nebraska and it’s been complete shit. Our G&P and the “biologists” are inept.

I don’t think it’s specific to NE this year. In IL we’ve been hearing reports that several areas got hit hard this year.
I actually saw deer consistently, but what was missing was a lot of higher age-class deer, and that has been the word in many areas…
