How did you get around? Train?

We are going to Europe and while I’ve been before, my wife is overloading me wanting to visit a million places. I’m more of a spend as much time in one place as possible and soak it all in, she’s more of a gotta visit everywhere.
We were there a couple weeks so felt like we spent a reasonable amount of time in most spots.

Flew into..Milan— train to Venice—train to Florence— rented a car and drove over to see Pisa and then on to a resort in Tuscany and then drove down to Rome where we worked it out to return the car at our hotel for ease. Then car service to Amalfi and back to Pompeii for a quick 1/2 day and on to the airport to fly home Out of…Naples.

The train situations in Europe are awesome in my opinion. At least the ones I’ve experienced. Super chill and smooth.

The trains I took in Spain were fantastic. How was the driving in Italy?

We are also going to England and I want no part in opposite lane opposite side of car driving

It was totally fine, the majority of it was rural or non-city. Rome is obviously a big city and a bit chaotic, but it was no big deal since we returned the car at the Hertz spot at the hotel. If going from major city to major city, trains are the way to go.

I’ve driven a bunch in England and Ireland, definitely different. Not as challenging as you’d think though.

This is totally understandable, but I’ve rented a car in Ireland and drove around for three days and it really wasn’t that big of an adjustment. Haveing the steering wheel on the other side of the car helps, so you feel natural by always having the driver toward the middle of the road.

I only screwed up once, and that was while making a left turn I automatically headed for the right lane but course corrected before causing any problems.

The best way is train if you are in a flat area or staying basically in a somewhat close proximity. I've travelled through Europe a ton and I use trains if it is going to be under 4 hours just because I like looking at the towns as we go along. After that, I'll just get on a flight as usually they are all pretty quick.

You've got the right approach on this one.

Taking the train is very easy in Italy. Probably the easiest out of the European countries I’ve been to. Multiple apps you can buy tickets on, although tbh I was there in 2023 and took the train a ton, and the only time they checked tickets was when I took an express first class trip.

You might be different but in my experience 3 days is the most you can really spend in any city, even like Rome that has a lot of stuff to see. For me the sweet spot is a 10-12 day trip with 3 days each in 3-4 cities. And in italy each city is unique enough that you’ll want to see a few.

To add my follow up, we went through Costco travel to book our Italy trip and for any tours or ticket purchases, we went through getyourguide.com.

Highly recommend any food tours for any place like Italy.
