Official TPB Red Dirt Country Thread

Need help figuring out a song I heard last night. About 2 brothers that went to Vietnam, 1 died and he is the narrator of the song. Mom is in a nursing home and the brother that died is staying in purgatory until his brother and mom die so he can meet them at the gates. CANNOT find it even with snippets of lyrics I remember.

Can you post a sound clip of you singing it?

Oh that’s “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line

Really? I just figured he fit in the genre, I guess I’m not super familiar with what specifically makes something “Red Dirt”

Red dirt is Oklahoma/Texas Country based. I don't hate Childers by no means, but he's way too folk/blue grass to fall under the red dirt category for me. I think he's actually a kentucky/tennessee native

Childers wouldn't be considered red dirt in the traditional sense being that he's from Kentucky and not OK/TX, however to say he's the opposite of what red dirt was founded on is not correct imo. That would be Nashville pop radio shit. Appalachia overall is probably producing superior music to the red dirt scene at the moment as well, Kentucky and West Virginia are loaded with great artists.

I think over the last decade there has been a significant amount of overlap between not only the sounds but also the fanbases of the Appalachia and TX/OK artists. Zach Bryan was influenced pretty heavily by both Turnpike and Childers. I like it all, personally.

How’d you find it?

I’m still obsessed with the Zach Bryan album. Constantly on repeat
another EP coming next week IIRC. guy has a lot of songs.

Who's everyone been listening to or seeing lately?

I've had a busy summer. Highlight was catching Turnpike, great show. Pining for some new stuff from those dudes.

Also saw Shane Smith & the Saints. These guys are big but they should be huge, they are so good. Rumblings of new music coming soon, they've already released a new single called Hummingbird. See them live if you can...also their fiddle player doesn't take a backseat to anyone.

Tomorrow I'm seeing Zach Bryan, Charles Wesley Godwin, and Morgan Wade. Zach is well known at this point, kinda looking forward to seeing Godwin just as much. his last album was sweet (he's from Kentucky but we don't get mad about that ITT). Morgan Wade flies under the radar a bit but she's this badass tattooed chick whose lived hard and has a great unique voice, love her.

I also recently discovered this young lady named Catie Offerman from New Braunfels whos an up and comer (has been opening shows for Parker McCollum). She only has a couple singles out so far BUT yall gotta at least check her Instagram, she is a dime. She's also classically trained on the fiddle and plays like 4 instruments, pretty talented.

some other names I'm feeling but need to dig into more from the Texas scene include Joshua Hedley, Matt Daniel, and Casey Chestnutt. American Aquarium also put out new music, haven't had time to listen thoroughly.

Zach just dropped that EP today. Guess I’m not going to do anything today but listen to that

I need to find my next new Red Dirt band. Parker is getting big, Koe is turning unlistenable, Flatland hasn’t dropped a new album in a while, Josh Abbott’s lyrics are awful now, etc.

I did get to see Turnpike is Council Bluffs this year. Going to see Parker and Randy Rogers at the end of July

Check out Kay Hasty. Different voice than Morgan Wade but similar in some ways.
