***Official don’t buy any bullshit they try selling you, offseason thread***

August used to be the time of year where I really started getting excited for football. This year I’m dreading it more and more as each day passes by. Watching them makes me so angry. The offseason has been a nice reprieve from the misery, but soon they will drag us back to football hell.

Used to be the same. I just let that shit go. I watch and I get excited about the positive things, but the entire time I watch I know they will find a way to fuck it up and let me down.

I have found it freeing to accept the mediocrity of something I have absolutely no ability whatsoever to influence change.

The last 7+ years have been torture. The last 4, the worst. Starting from lightning-gate cancelled game 1 of Frosts tenure, it has been an utter disaster.

I want to be able to talk myself into thinking this season has a chance of being decent (hah - decent would be a non-losing season at this point - how sad). The schedule is our easiest in 15 years. We brought in some transfers that look like some may have talent. We jettisoned dead weight assistants, and replaced them with hopeful upgrades. We lost an anti-clutch QB.

But our O Line looks like it may be ass yet again. So far, I have seen nothing to think they will even be better than last year, which was an ass O Line. We have a new QB, not quite as fleet of foot as our old QB, but we are banking on him being able to make quicker reads and get the ball where it should be going at a higher percentage. But who the hell knows what to expect once actual games start from our QB's - it's a crap shoot.

We likely have more overall talent at WR. But still lost by far our best receiver from last year, and none of these guys are really proven to be studs that we brought in. We also lost a really good TE to the NFL, and while we have one good one left, the rest is iffy. Fidone will be very good.... if he can get healthy.

RB looks to have added talent even though we lost some guys. But until a few guys from this group have shown they can bring it on gameday, we are just hoping/guessing.

Defense lost some good players. D Line got hit, JoJo obviously, and the secondary. We have seemed to bring in some talent at all those positions, but again, we are just hoping/guessing most of those guys pan out.

And then the biggest issue - head coaching and overall coaching. Frost has proven over 4 seasons he is in over his head, and I am not sold he has "it" to be a good head coach. Special teams has been beyond atrocious (that is being nice). Will Busch truly be able to turn that ship around to even be average? We hope.

So many questions and unknowns. On paper, we have a lot of talent. But paper means squat. We have had paper talent for years. In 4 seasons that has won us 15 games and lost us 29. Until they prove it on the field, I will be a skeptic. Just is what it is. Yet still hopeful, which means I should probably order an extra TV remote or two just in case.

The fact that he hasn’t realized a dominant offensive line is what won him an NC and still controls college football is mind blowing. Year 5, what’s the biggest doubt….O line. Transfers at QB, WR, RB or even on defense won’t cover the inability to fix your greatest weakness. He was given a blank check twice and never looked for the best OL coach available.

Hell, by mid August (in the 80s/90s) we were already planning which couple (out of our friends-group) would be hosting the first game-watching party.

Everybody showed up early, brought our food contribution to the kitchen, found a spot for each cooler (not too far from the main tv) and then determined which chair, couch or loveseat would be the best spot to watch the game from. Some even stood.

We had/(have) a group of about eight couples who were mainstays each and every Saturday for these get-togethers. The ONLY reason you weren’t at these parties was because you actually drove the 430 miles east to attend the game in person.

Approximately 3 of the 8 wives actually gave a shit about the game AND actually understood what was going on. (“Honey, why is that outside receiver a yard off the LOS?”).

The other five wives could be found in another room in the house where they were sharing stories about kids, grandkids, their gardens or who was screwing who, wherever they worked.

The men overlooked the wives who didn’t care about the game because these gatherings (for those wives) were as much about the social aspect of the day as it was about football.

The game started, Huskers scored the first 17-24 points, the other team maybe got a field goal (or, god forbid, a TD) and it was 38-3 at halftime. “Over at halftime” was our motto.

We ate, we drank, we high-fived, we had fun. Life was good. The Huskers win another one, going away. The food was great, the beer (or mixed drinks later in the day) was cold and it was simply a fun day.

One of the side stories from those days (especially the 90s) was how many of the 3rd and 4th team kids got in the game in the 4th quarter. They got in the game, they played and they got experience. How long has it been for that dynamic to be a part of our season?

Mrs Bomber and I have five kids (blended family) who were all in their teens back in the 90s. Many of the kids were at these game-watching parties too. They are now in their 30s/early 40s and their memories of those game-days have faded.

So very sad. What used to be……

Therein lies the problem. He is such an arrogant prick, he probably thinks he won that NC and those linemen just rode his coattails.

It is incredible that Frost doesn't seem to realize winning the LOS is the key to winning games. His offensive philosophy (go fast) just doesn't work in the B1G or in most P5 conferences.

Yet, here we are. Looking like a shitty O Line again, which hampers everything you can do on offense. It's braindead.

Then throw in his lack of care about things like.... field position and special teams, and you see why we are in clusterfuckville continually. Can't/won't establish a running game with a poor O Line, don't care to win or even break even in areas of games that matter like field position and special teams. Clock management at the ends of halves and games has also been putrid. Just poor coaching with a lack of emphasis in almost all of the key areas where games are actually won against similarly talented opponents. And heck, most of the time we actually have a talent advantage - probably at least in 80% of the games we play - and still fuck up enough in key areas of the game to lose 2/3rds of the games we play. Going into year 5 - will we truly see any improvement in special teams, O Line play, field position and turnovers? I am skeptical we improve much or enough in these areas to at least break even on those parts of the game. Hope I am wrong.

I'd disagree with this. And they haven't really gone fast. Almost every team in the country has some form of tempo plays, going fast, but it's not this Oregon warp speed stuff anymore. Many teams don't huddle anymore. The best team in the B1G is tempo no huddle.

Watched that shit live from the stands in east Lansing...twas awful and left a mark
I haven't been that pissed off about a loss in years. Usually I'm just like, meh and drink heavily. That one I was very bitter and drank VERY heavily.

Go fast can work if you have a ton of great WR/RB talent, a good O Line and the QB who can see the game and make decisions quickly - in other words, an already potent offense that would be very good to great no matter what tempo they ran. I actually think Frost can be or has been a good play caller at times, but the execution on the field has been poor often. His play calling in the red zone has not been good though.

I am not saying we should be milking the clock in long huddles, I am saying Go Fast/forced up tempo was a bad plan for Nebraska most of the time. We didn't have the QB who could process quickly (just the opposite). We simply were not proficient enough at anything to push tempo, and it puts extra stress on our defense for mulitple reasons. More possessions for the opposition, usually better field position for our opposition, more mistakes made by our offense including turnovers. And yes, the B1G is more physical than other leagues, and since we have not been physically dominating at the LOS much, it puts us in a bind.

Gotcha, and you're right. It was a bad plan for Nebraska from the start.

But as far as a college football landscape, it's prevalent and works...

Isn’t more of the benefit to no huddle being able to control personnel groups on D and less the tempo side?

I’d think by now tempo is prevalent enough in high school that you’re not going to catch anyone off guard in the college space but if I can get a bad matchup in my favor and hold that personnel and limit the time the D coaches have to adjust, that’s a game changer.

I think that would be the intelligent way to use tempo, but offensive genius Scott Fraudst uses it as a tool to get the Fraudfense off the the field as quickly as possible.

Just bumping this back to the top so we can all take a deep breath and temper those expectations after a few huffs of glue and kool-aid drops waffling in the air from the local scribes.
Good bump. Definitely much needed with the recent injection on optimism around here. How we will lose is anyones guess, but the losses will be plentiful and painful.

I don't know about you guys but I'm to the point I feel like I'm sucking Kool-aid from a fire hose. I'm ready to be hurt again!
