Offensive Staff

it is for nebraska
Our non-freshman skill position talent is almost certainly in the lower third of the league. Our OL is probably the same.

That makes offense hard.

We only averaged 19.6 points per conference game last year, and that as with one of the better skill position players in the conference, Trey Palmer (who averaged 4.5 ppg by himself).

There is ample evidence Rhule will demand results. He has a pretty good record of identifying guys who turn out to be able to coach after he works with then a couple of years. Why would we believe we could manage this better than he will? He shows at every turn he isn't an idiot. Everything you see, he sees, too. And much more you don't see.
Yep and all of that is why I didn't b&m when guys like doogie and Satt were hired, and both of those were head shakers. Satt has done nothing but prove the critics right this far, so hopefully Rhule recognizes that as an area of opportunity to improve.

I mean you are likely losing both Sims and Purdy...

You only add Danny Dimes who isn't aging the best right now.

I would be fine with adding 2 transfers.. If you had an instant impact guy and a guy who needs a year (Zane Flores for example)
I’m not as biased as Jimbo is on Kaelin, but although his record isn’t all shiny this season… he still makes high level throws. I even had a mom (she roots for Gretna) that I went to their game with on Friday even made the observation that was he throwing “bullets.”

He was running for his life on Friday and still threw for 300+. He’s a gamer.

Sometimes when I see these types of threads, along with @Ducksker (aka Kitty) 's I wonder what certain people do for a living.

Nobody knows for sure whether Rhule and his staff will work in the longer term. But to have a linear thought process that 5 games in we hired the wrong guy in charge is naive and a linear thought process - usually reserved for those that don't completely understand the bigger picture.

We're all pissed and frustrated, but there are times in life where at least a little patience is wise. The sooner we run off coaches, the harder it'll be to attract others. Perhaps what Rhule might be learning is the runway isn't quite as long as he thought - and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Ultimately, we may need to replace a few pieces like you mention. It's a bit too early to make that declaration, but it seemed you were voicing your frustrations more than anything.

I only say this because there have been MANY head coaches over the years that didn't get it right until they were deeper into their tenure. A coach that can bring a couple of his son's with him doesn't happen all that often.
Nebraska has gone 4-8, 4-8, 5-7, 3-5, 3-9, 4-8 the last 6 years. It’s not exactly like we’ve regressed under Rhule thus far. Nebraska fans are delusional.

Rhule strikes me as a dude who's going to unfailingly have his AC's backs during the season from any outside/media/message board pressure regardless of how things are going, then ruthlessly evaluate them after the season & hold them accountable to the expectations he's set.
I can tell you for certain he is exactly like this.

Thats from people who currently work for/around him. That "Grinder"mentality is not a display but truly a work policy

Considering Rhule has stated they think they can compete with what they have. Is that coach speak, probably...I'm not saying they regressed, I'm saying the O has been been woefully underwhelming in penalties, turnovers, points, yardage, etc.

It's frustrating that we can't get a guy like Coleman on the field...do they really need to know all 3 positions before they can get on? Couldn't a guy like that get on the field, run some vertical routes to at least threaten the defense?

It's frustrating to watch 3 different tackles get beat, the exact same way....over and over again...probably the most concerning.

Id argue its the worst in the league

I think we would be fine if there was talent or youth hiccups, but the majority of our complaints are systemic problems

Im more preferential to spread option. Coastal Carolina style. What Leipolds OC at KU is similar to that regard. Basically any style spread offense where you’re running triple, double, RPO most of the time. Read people. Don’t block them.
Agreed. Make the defenders be wrong

What’s he supposed to say? “We’re fucked”?

I didn't like the Satterfield hire. Especially at 1.4 mil, we could have gotten a top 5 level OC. I don't think Satterfield has necessarily been terrible, but I also don't see a guy who is going to be scheming a really good offense.

That being said, we are so devoid of offensive talent across the board. O Line still mostly sucks. Our Tackles are just bad, really bad. We are playing a QB who is just getting his feet wet, and obviously is not likely to ever be a really good actual QB. He is big, strong and fast, but the other components of being a QB I don't think he will ever be that. Sims is kind of in the same boat - big, strong and fast, but a slow blinker and turnover machine to boot.

RB's weren't very good before 2 of our top 3 RB's went down for the season. Losing Ajay Allen hurts, he was likely the most talented kid of the bunch.

Receivers at wideout is just poor. Washington is OK, not great. The midget is decent for what he can do, but not gonna break a game open. Bullock is not going to scare anyone. We should be getting the young speed/talent on the field and let them get experience. It's not like this season is going anywhere anyway - use it to get what young talent we have some experience.

TE has been decent, really. Fidone is a big target and has done well. Both our TE's seem to be real good blockers.

There isn't much for an OC to work with on offense as far as talent. I still don't like the Satterfield hire, but any OC would struggle with our entire offense being weak at pretty much every position save maybe Center and TE.

I hope Rhule is the hard-ass he is purported to be, and will jettison subpar assistants in offseasons if it needs to be done. I think Rhule did well with defensive assistant hires, but offensively I think he could have done a lot better. We will see how it shakes out over this season and the offseason.

How can you honestly say what are “systemic” problems? I’m not saying they are or aren’t, you just can’t really know 5 games in either way.
Just a few off the top of my head

Play calling late in the game vs Minnesota and in general

Schemes that are too complex to get freshmen in the game

Turnovers (something Satterfield's offenses have a history of)

I also look at the offense and how clunky they look… then I look at the defense and how organized they look. Just shit like that

It's the controllable dumb shit that bothers me... 2nd & 6, in the red-zone is an almost automatic false-start or procedural penalty.

What the fuck is that? 3rd and 9, pass hits Washington in the hands and he drops it.

Come the fuck on.

I thought my wife hated football but after watching the ND/Duke game Saturday night with her I had an epiphany: my wife doesn't hate football, she hates Nebraska football because it's like watching dogshit hit a wall and then somebody trying to clean it up by pissing on it. She actually said "(watching ND/Duke) This is fun to watch compared to Nebraska. Nebraska just looks bad."

My football-retarded wife can tell the difference between good football and bad football.

These people don’t have an inner voice. It’s not a surprise.
I have an inner voice just not on an online message board. I’m here to complain about my favorite team sucking, not fraternize.

I get this, but I don't get why we picked Sims... Why we picked Fleeks instead of a more proven WR.... Why we didn't go to the portal when Ajay left....

At some point there are choices. Wisconsin took 3 portal QBs and 4 portal WRs. Meanwhile we took a 4x100 team at WR.
Thats why i left QB and WR out of it. Swap lines and RB's with us and we have a lot better offense.

Wisconsin passing game isn't very good until the get the running game going and play action.

Great get by Frost and Mickey to get Palmer out of the portal….wish we got something like that this last offseason. All the momentum of having a new staff and we absolutely shit the bed in the portal. Cmon grinders…. Go get a difference maker!
