Breaking No Martinez vs Cockeyes

Well, burning Smothers redshirt last week for 2 snaps to runout the clock in the 1st half becomes a complete non-issue now.
So the question becomes... Can we stay close enough to the Cockeyes without AMs early game heroics to give Smothers a chance to win it in the end? Probably not.
I wonder how much the line moves with this info?

It's a shame if Martinez's career ends like this, but pretty much the only thing that could get me excited going into the offseason is if Smothers somehow looks solid in pulling off the upset.
I don't get why so many people have already buried Smothers, by the way. He's a RS Freshman who was a 4-star recruit in Alabama, yeah he sucked in a spring game but he's shown flashes of competence in the tiny amount we've seen him in real games. I certainly don't think it's out of the question that he can be a legit QB, even if he's not a superstar.
Joe Ganz wasn't a superstar, he probably couldn't throw a ball 30 yards in the air, but he was a great point guard of a QB who ran the 07 and 08 offenses by spreading the ball around quickly and making tough runs when needed. That's all I want out of a Nebraska QB any time soon.

It's all a well planned ruse. Bring in Smothers to blow his redshirt last week...announce that he starts this week...the Cockeyes suck every bit of the ruse down...and we trot Martinez out on the field Friday...play our balls off and lose by 1 with a chance to win on the last drive.

Honest guess knowing how Frost views Martinez - He didn't even think about the fact that it would give Cockeye a head start on game planning against a ridiculously inexperienced RS Freshman, and he thinks Martinez deserves a week of media and fans fawning over the sacrifices he's made during his career. I think he's consumed with Martinez having "the kind of experience he deserves at Nebraska" and it legitimately drives a lot of his decisions.

I could see Smothers coming out and having some success early. Given that Cockeye will have to adjust to how fast he is at QB. But once they adjust...I dunno. Gotta find a way to not get him killed.
Move the pocket a lot. Chip DE's. I dunno something because Adrian has gotten used to DE's being on him in 2 seconds. Smothers....not so much.

I watched that on Youtube earlier. The ball is a bit of wobbler. If you watch the game we played against the FCS team he throw a deep ball to Betts I think, and that was a wobbler too if I remember.
Maybe his arm will get stronger if he's in the program for another year or two. He does seem to be decisive at least, but I said the same thing about McCaffrey last year and we all know how that turned out.

Agree. His size, height, and arm will be needed at sometime. I know people hate to hear it but Haarberg while not perfect passed the eyeball test in person way more then Smothers during the scrimmage months ago.

Considering the line moved from -3.5 NE at about 11 am to -2 Cockeye now I'd say it's a bad thing.

What's more insane is that a 3-8 team was favored vs the #17 team in the nation and now they are playing with a backup QB and the line is only at -2 for the #17 team in the nation. I assume that line will keep moving. Probably would be good to bet Cockeye at -2 right now. If you had Cockeye moneyline yesterday you're probably feeling really good.

I'm going to root for Logan and hope he lights up the score board and right this sinking ship and whips Cockeye's ass. If he can beat Cockeye, he should get his own VIP room at G25.
