I think culturally - which is obviously secondary to monetary concerns - we are much closer to the B1G than the SEC.

Not saying one is better than the other from a long term fit perspective but holy shit people need to go to Louisiana or Mississippi and see for themselves.

Don't forget all of the other b1g teams didnt want to play football a few years ago

The challenge with that statement is the disparity in culture across the B1G brand given the geographic dispersion of the conference. Whose culture are we fitting in with here? USC's? Michigan's?

Much like yourself, I've lived in the South (Atlanta area) for a period of time. I personally found that there were many similar attributes (respect for elders, pulling your car over for passing funeral processions, love of country, fear of God, etc.) between Nebraskans and Georgians, and there were several that we didn't have in common. I really grew to dislike being called a "Yankee" and had to remind my Southern friends that Nebraska became a State in 1867 ... two years AFTER the "war between the states", so no - we weren't Yankees. Sodbusters, settlers, pioneers? Sure. But not Yankees.

Go back and read OP’s post. Nowhere did he say the SEC is wooing Nebraska or even that they want us. What they did say is Nebraska and PSU are unhappy in the B1G and have been having behind the scenes discussions with the SEC. What he didn’t say is what the SEC’s position on this is.
Nebraska has been given indications by the big10 that their membership is in jeopardy. The AAU membership is an issue. Being a premier brand in football helped overlook that but now with the Pac12 brands entering the conference & us sucking at football have made us expendable if we don’t get things rectified on the academic side. (Which is highly political & we don’t exactly match up there either). It was just a couple years ago we publicly were saying “fuck you” to the conference. Does anyone believe that doesn’t affect the future relationship when we are a bottom feeder athletically & at the bottom academically (& the only member without AAU accreditation)?
So contingency plans are being back channeled just in case. But in reality, the SEC isn’t happening bc we are terrible at football
So it needs to get fixed fast.

What are you basing this opinion off of?

You are posting in a “Nebraska to SEC” thread correct?

Which is true
1) sEC is after us (knowing we have sucked for 20 years & are at an all time low right now. We are the 2nd worst P5 program, only behind Vanderbilt)
2) we are the odd duck in the Big10 & haven’t delivered on our football prestige. And have been a disruptive partner in the conference.

Which is a fact & which is which is wild speculation.
Then ask “if there is talk between the SEC & Nebraska, who is most likely to have initiated it & why”

Yeah I'm never exactly sure what people mean by "cultural fit" but I don't get the sense that we're somehow more similar to the SEC at all. Maybe it's more of a perceived rural vs. urban thing? I dunno. I admittedly haven't spent much time in the south, but places like Chicago and Minneapolis and Columbus feel like a prettyyyy close "cultural fit" to me.

Again, no one in here has said the SEC is “after us.” They’ve said Nebraska is unhappy in the B1G and has been talking to the SEC behind closed doors. For all we know, it could be Nebraska initiating these conversations and the SEC said “no thanks.”

Literally your entire premise is wild speculation on your part. People have asked you where you’re getting your info and so far you haven’t produced one source other than your own musings.

Oh I think I know what you're referring to.

There was a thing about a year ago where the AAU magically started being written about by local reporters here. IIRC some in the know person (Benning maybe) was saying that that was likely the B1G putting political pressure on Nebraska's holdouts to consolidate the campuses for research funding purposes, for AAU readmittance.

But that was done FOR Nebraska's benefit. There's no actual way that the B1G would actually do it. Nebraska is in the top 5-6 money generating ADs in the 18 team B1G. No conference is letting go of that. Absolutely no way & if you believe they would just because of a few 4-8 seasons, I'm sorry but you're not very bright.

We were the #6 athletic department for revenue last year (#26 the year before).

We're a top 20 staple in most athletic department money measurements, and from what I recall, we're unique in that sports makes a donation to academics each year, so our numbers are actually a little better than they appear.

We've sucked in football for the past several years? True, but irrelevant. We're a money machine & generate TV/media eyeballs at elite levels. If we leave, the B1G media contract average value per team drops. That's what matters 1000x more than whether we've been to a bowl recently.

eyeballs get less & less the if we continue to be how we’ve been
Keep in mind only Vanderbilt has a longer Bowl-less streak than us & last yr we had an offense that was as boring as Cockeye’s
This is not a trajectory that translates to TV value.
The AAU stuff means something to big10 presidents. Right now we bring zero to the league.
Do you really think the SEC is reaching out to Nebraska when our current state is Far behind the former Big10 west schools
Turd left bc we weren’t making progress to hire a president to work on rectifying the AAU issue (which there is no guarantee we’ll ever be readmitted)
When relegation starts to occur, we don’t want to be continually below .500 or barely above .500. The Big12 may not even want us at that point.
Our peer right now is Vanderbilt that has zero value in a renegotiated TV deal, we have no value academically & bring nothing in other revenue sports
We have to win now & win more than just being bowl eligible. We have to return to being a top25 program
I just don't buy this. Yes, Nebraska has had a poor record for a decade and not been bowl eligible for some time now.

That has not appeared to affect TV ratings at all. Nebraska's inventory is still far more valuable than Vanderbilt's despite the superficial similarities. Nebraska has been in the top-15 to 20 in TV ratings over the past three years, at least. Arguably some of the worst seasons in school history. That isn't going to change despite your downplaying of Nebraska's historical significance.

Nebraska's brand still has weight.

For now but for how long?
Everyone poo poos the sellout streak being “fake” & we all know it’s on life support even with “help from friends”
Continued bad football & that officially ends & those “great TV #s” also will disappear
We have to start winning now. If we don’t combined with our continued administrative bungling we could be told to kick rocks & be begging the Big12 to take us back.
this whole thread is ridiculous
The SEC has no interest in us nor should they. Unless you believe they want a doormat to replace Vanderbilt
We bring nothing but dusty trophies & a volleyball team. You have to be over 40 to even remember Nebraska as a “football school”.
When was the last time we finished in the Top25? 2012
Top 15? 2009
Top 10? 2001

To actually believe Nebraska has any value to conference realignment takes a special kind of delusional thinking
We are closer to relegation than being desired by another p4 league.
Be ecstatic we are in the Big10 bc if we were asked to leave, we’d have zero leverage to find a new home. We’d be forced to take a “bad deal” of partial share membership

Everyone knows we can't be terrible forever, that's a strawman.

By money, we are in the top half of either the B1G or the SEC strictly from an athletics perspective. We are an elite driver of the media contract value, which is the #1 revenue source for conference athletics. Even during our historically bad period. Every AD & chancellor knows if we get going even a little bit, we're going to be a top 5 valuable asset to any conference.

The things you're citing are for fans, sportswriters, and message boards. They have almost no bearing on any realignment.

We’re going to finish top 15 this year. You’re getting your panties is a wad for nothing.
