Would love to know why he decommitted from the hometown team

Texas is full of shitty towns and Lubbock is close to the top.

He’ll still be able to spend his bag of cash on cars and Amazon crap though.
Side bar story: the parents of my best friend in junior high both went to school at Texas Tech (its where they met). Her family had settled the area a ways back, and her family was - at the time - considered "well to do" in those parts. But her Grandaddy had a drinking and gambling problem.

The story Beth told us was he got involved in one of those high stakes poker games and kept tossing deeds to properties on the table to stay in the game. Legend has it he lost 1/4 of downtown Lubbock that night at the poker table. They only thing he didn't gamble away was a parking lot, which they later sold when her Dad passed away. She was so disgusted by the history that they donated the entire proceeds to Rockbrook Methodist Church just to wash their hands of it.

That's my only Texas Tech story, but it's a dandy (IMO).

I can’t wait until the boosters start throwing the deeds to 5-star recruits on the table.

Would love to know why he decommitted from the hometown team
Not really the hometown team. He is from Utah and only moved to Oregon after flipping his commit from USC to the Ducks. And now he's announced he will be playing his senior HS season in Alabama.

A few months after flipping his commitment from USC to Oregon, Viliami Moala moved from South Jordan (Utah) Bingham to Eugene (Ore.) Willamette, a good sign for the Ducks that Moala was locked in.

He was not the only Oregon defensive line commit to do so since Tony Cumberland made the move from Goodyear (Ariz.) Desert Edge to Willamette following his commitment to the Ducks as well.

Cumberland remains committed to Oregon. On Monday, Moala backed off his pledge to the Ducks and also announced that he would be playing his senior season at Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson of all places.

After his de-commitment, Moala said Thompson was always a school he wanted to play for and now it could open up a lot more possibilities in his recruitment.

So far, North Carolina and Miami have been the two schools that have reached out the most to Moala but there could be a significant Southeast focus to his recruitment moving forward. On Monday night, Nebraska, Cal, Utah and Florida had also communicated with Moala as things ramp up even more.

There has been a significant amount of movement for Moala throughout the first three years of his prep career with multiple stops in Utah and Arizona before going to Bingham and then Willamette this spring.

The Tar Heels and the Hurricanes have been reaching out – and Moala is hopeful more interest starts coming his way once he’s settled at Thompson – but he’s also not limiting his possibilities or looking for a particular offer.

More than anything, it seems Moala is going to take his time before making a third commitment and shutting down his recruitment.

Some kind of dream offer is not necessarily what Moala is looking for now at this stage.

“As of right now, I don’t have one to be honest,” Moala said. “Just trying to find the best school that fits me.”

The three-star defensive tackle is the third defensive line de-commit for Oregon so far this recruiting cycle along with Tomuhini Topui, who flipped to USC, and Bott Mulitalo, who flipped to BYU to pursue playing on the offensive line.
