MacDonald was an LB coach when Harbaugh made him DC. Don Martindale was bad with the Giants, but I guess he did have experience!
Not sure MacDonald applies...the Harbaugh's passed hot commodities back and forth to give them experience for the other brother. John would send Jim his "next DC" and let him learn in college. He literally was hand picked by John Harbaugh when he was like 26 years old to become a Head Coach in the NFL...

Not to mention MacDonald was what, 34 at the time hired and was correctly identified by a sitting long-tenured NFL Head Coach as a soon to be NFL Head Coach. John Butler is 51 and has been turned down as a DC for the last Decade+. They are not the same.

Martindale had been an ST Coordinator or DC since 1996 with brief stops as a position coach in between. DC'd NFL defenses in Denver, Baltimore, New York, and then Michigan. Again - not the fucking same.

For those saying DBs took a step back, In 2023 Nebraska allowed 2,527 passing yards, 210 ypg
in 2024 with Butler Nebraska allowed 2,516 passing yards, 209 ypg

Stats have always been deceiving...

2023 Nebraska allowed 59.5% completions and 1.2 passing TD's per game. In a brand new system, with no offense to help out.

2024 Nebraska allowed 63.9% completions and 1.9 passing TD's per game. In year 2, with one position coach change.

I'm not a fan of the Butler hire, but he has my support. All eyes are on him.

OTOH, how the fuck Foley hasn't been let go of his duties is of more concern for me. IDGAF that his contract ends in 21 days. He's absolute dog shit and we have 2 seasons proof.

Let’s just give it a shot guys, not like we can be much worse than we’ve been the last decade. I think Butler will do a good job.

If we’re not Top 20 total defense next season I’ll post my wife’s nudes.
I would expect a regression on D next year having nothing to do with Butler. Unless of course we can attract some stud DLmen out of the portal.

I'm willing to role with it. The only major downside to me is we don't get to raid someone else's roster for players.

About half of his jimmies and joes entered the portal, so he’s going to get a chance to show what he can put together right away.
Yep. The one shitty downside of hiring within. Doesn't help to hire a nfl guy dl either.....no dudes to bring.
