It's funny how everyone is like how can you be annoyed or under whelmed by this. It's because we consistently make the wrong hires in key places and we've done it for the better part of 2 decades for fuck sake.

It seems We're the only Blue blood that can't go out and hire proven anything. Fuck I think we're the only Blue blood program to ever be down this long as a program.

I'm guessing Snow is going to be more of an analyst, but I suppose Rhule will lay all that out in a press conference in the near future. If he's an on the field coach then it makes sense that he would be the safeties coach and Nebraska brings in either a corners coach or Butler takes the corners.

Yikes

You guys love to bitch man.

Why was Tony White some Godsend and Butler is chopped liver? It’s not like White was some super experienced DC. Rhule has had good defenses everywhere he has been. I don’t expect that to change.

I like that Snow will be there and I definitely like hiring someone from the Chiefs that has been coaching one of the better D-Lines in the NFL the last several years.

I think I like it more knowing how many of you are freaking out.
The LBs and DBs weren’t communicating…that’s in the DC.

I

I took that more as him saying he doesn’t want to hire someone who is going to run an entirely new system that doesn’t fit the current personnel on the team or recruiting profile of guys we’ve scouted.

I’m sure there will be scheme differences next year.
Yeah when Rhule said that I kinda wondered if it would be Butler. I don’t think Rhule is wanting to be a hands off CEO on both sides of the ball yet. He knows what he’s doing and he wants to coach D. I like the Snow hire. That is the one element that Rhule was missing in this rebuild that he had at all prior stops. Now it’s time to get as many difference makers as we can from the portal and sign up a DB coach.

Butler was definitely not in my top tier of candidates. However, that does not make this a bad hire. Gaetz St promoted him to DC back in 2013 and he was a finalist for the Bills' DC job.
  • Midwestern State (1999–2000)
    Defensive coordinator/linebackers coach/safeties coach
  • Southwest Texas State (2001–2002)
    Special teams coach/safeties coach
  • Harvard (2003–2006)
    Special teams coach/linebackers coach
  • Minnesota (2007–2010)
    Special teams coach/linebackers coach
  • South Carolina (2011)
    Special teams coach/linebackers coach
  • Gaetz State (2012)
    Defensive backs coach
  • Gaetz State (2013)
    Defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach
  • Houston Texans (2014–2017)
    Secondary coach
  • Buffalo Bills (2018–2021)
    Defensive backs coach
  • Buffalo Bills (2022–2023)
    Defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers (2024-present)
    Secondary/Defensive pass game coordinator
He has a legit resume to sell to D recruits and the D staff (pending stud DB hire) now has NFL coaches who can get them ready for the next level.

He’s who we have now. We have no choice but to go with it.

My ultimate, pie in the sky, hope is that Rhule will convince Dave Merritt to come from the Chiefs to coach his son’s team and be DB/PGC for defense.

Exactly. I don't "love" the hire and am definitely let down that it is not Leonhard/Arnett/Symons. But he isn't a bad hire either.

Not big name hires but I don't see anything to really freak out about.

Would prefer a proven DC but I don't think Butler is a bad coach all of a sudden.

The first two years under Rhule are going to be an unenforced error by not reading the tea leaves correctly. Being a "developmental program" isn't going to work out in this new landscape of CFB. The Nebraska vs. Colorado culture comparison is decided imo and Colorado won, at least for now and in the early tenure of any head coach wins are paramount.

Now this could be temporary if contracts become the norm moving forward but in the interim we left wins on the table in the hope that our development would generate wins on the backend. It's obvious you can't bank on your talented recruits sticking around but I'm pretty confident in Rhule's ability to pivot.

I don't think it's hyperbole to say this offseason is going to make or break him (shocker heading into year 3, I know).

Yeah you're right.

Venables is on his 3rd OC right?
USC completely revamped their defensive staff last year.
Florida St just completely revamped both of their offensive and defensive staff.
Miami revamped both of their offensive and defensive staff last year.
LSU just had to hire another offensive coordinator and had to hire a defensive coordinator last year.
Michigan just got their offensive coordinator hire wrong and had to re-start.

Maybe in this era of college football it's just really hard to hire coordinators?

I’m not going to sit here and say this is all bad.

We’ve got a ton of wood to chop on defense and I’m not sure if this move lightens the load.
