As an avid Kansas fan, I wish that Bill Self could fail in the portal the way that Fred has. I would give anything to find a Brice Williams, Juwan Gary, or Reink Mast type of player in the portal for KU. Instead, we've brought in guys like Hunter Dickinson, who was supposed to be all-world, but in reality is lazy, soft, and a huge liability on defense. I've had this conversation about Self with many of my KU fans. One year rental players don't really work well with his system. He's a demanding coach that ideally forces you to play defense in order to get playing time. When one and dones were all the rage, we tried dipping our toe in the pool there with guys like Wiggens and Embid and it didn't work out for us. When we went back to relying on players that were in the system for 2-3 years at least, we got back to having better success. Self is going through the same process again with the transfer portal.

Ideally, you want to find transfers like Brice and Juwan that can be in your system for multiple years and continue to grow. I think Fred has done a great job of that. Those are two good examples, but Tominaga was also a multi year guy and Mast will be too. One and done type of guys should be the exception, to fill immediate holes, not to build your team off of. Fred, like Self, has a very specific system, and guys need to be in it for multiple years in order to be successful.

Mast, Berke, Sam and Essegian back. Hopefully one of the redshirts (Frager and Janowski) can play off the bench. Will need to get some scorers from the portal
We need some athletes. I know Fred favors basketball skill over athleticism, but maybe with revenue-sharing + NIL we can land some dudes.

Hunter Dickinson is a two time All-American and will garner more accolades this season. His defense is marginal, but he more than makes up for it on offense. Only KU fans complain about All-Americans.

As for AJ Storr, you have every right to bitch about that dude. He's earning a 7 figure NIL deal to be the most inconsistent player in major college basketball. His attitude and effort level is just pathetic.

I have a feeling Storr is going to be one of those dudes who transfers to 5 different programs during his career.

@Southendzonehusker will you at least own up to being completely wrong about this one? Your narrative a whole is pretty poor, but these are stats/facts that fly right in the face of what you are arguing.

To me, it sounds like you have connections to some of the local/Omaha kids that have ended up elsewhere and are choosing "their side", which means you need to be anti-Fred. I feel like your argument would be much more understood if you just said that you are biased and are not a fan of Hoiberg, rather than throwing out blatantly wrong arguments...
Yeah I didn’t realize their stats were so close but I also don’t think it’s comparing apples to apples.

As for my feelings on Hoiberg, I wouldn’t say that I have chosen a side. I do know a decent amount of local basketball people to know what has happened before but it’s not just that. It drives me nuts watching how sloppy Fred’s teams can be or how we come out absolutely flat at times. That’s 1000% coaching and has nothing to do with recruiting local kids. No team will ever be good when you do that but people just accept it since our programs sucked and we made the tourney last night

Only Mayo worked out well for KU this year as Storr and the rest of the transfers are disappointing. Not living up to the hype. I think it just shows that players need to make sure they are going to the right playing style or system for them over taking the biggest NIL check. Storr barely sees the floor on a team searching for scoring and outside shooting. Brice Williams on the KU team would be the 3 level scorer they are missing.

I can't wait for KJ Adams to graduate. Not sure why Bill loves him so much but he is such an offensive liability and lazy. Almost always the last person down the floor and clogs up the lane because he can't shoot from more than 6 feet out. When your starting PF who can't score or block shots and is averaging less than 5 reb/game it's not a good sign.
