Hard Knocks - DONU Style

This is awesome. Something that stands out right away is how seriously and authentically Rhule and his staff take the camaraderie and "brotherhood" aspects. Just in that video we see things like:
  • Moving the team into the dorms for two weeks
  • Having each meeting start with a bunch of high fives and hugs all around
  • Having different members of the team get in front of the group during the meeting and introduce themselves and do a bit (the player in the video rapped and the team loved it)
  • Ambushing the team with water balloons at the end of a practice
Every single coach uses "culture" and "brotherhood" and "the guy on your right and left" as a cliched talking point, but it seems like NU is now doing sooo much to actually create it and have it feel real to everyone on the team. I know it's impossible to have every player on the same page, but Rhule and the gang are showing that it takes actual work and passion to CREATE team bonding and culture.

I remember hearing about how defensive players didn't even know the names of offensive players in recent years, and vice versa, I just can't imagine a disconnected atmosphere like that anymore under Rhule.

A little different from giving the coach a standing ovation when he walks in, isn't it?

Anyone know what song he was doing? I couldn't make out a single word. (That was a problem at various times throughout the video. Sometimes the music overwhelmed the speaking. You can tell they didn't have people mic'ed up.)

I noticed it even with the room assignments, they really tried to mix it up so that players would be with other players they might not ordinarily be around - offense with defense, scholarship with walk-ons, older players with younger ones, and so on.

It's helping to foster a mentality that you play for your brother on the right and left of you. The game is bigger than any individual.

Another impeccably produced video. I wish they were releasing more than just the 3 episodes. The film team really loves this Ethan Nation kid - he seems like a character.

Nice little segment on IGC, I think he'll make an impact this season. Also, a Marcus Washington sighting.
