I agree but keep in mind that not all of our wealthy boosters live in or around Nebraska. We have rich fans all over the country that would probably put in money if we started looking like a Top 10 team again. I know a couple big Husker Fans down here at the lake that could scratch out $100,000 checks to the athletic department without flinching. Granted it is not a huge check by some standards but our sheer volume of fans could really add up. NIL opportunities are there for the players and businesses. Most people in Denver or Chicago could really care less about a Northwestern or Buff player advertising their business. But do that in Nebraska and it could make a big difference. Does a KU player in KC mean much for advertising? The city is split between KU/MU and in reality some MU fans might not support a KU based business as they really hate KU. Also add in KSU to that equation. We still just don't have the money. Oklahoma there's really Oklahoma and Oklahoma St and there's twice as many people. I'd probably put Oklahoma in that tier 2 group as well. If they're ahead of us it isn't much.
I agree with your overall point that our fanbase is rabid and pound for pound I'd put us up against anybody including Ohio St. There's just so much more money backing Ohio St that we literally can't compete.
We have some wealthy people but we don't have any/much old money like schools in the south/southeast/northeast. Old stupid money. Our oldest money which isn't very old is Buffett and he has very little to do with football.
I wish we could get Warren Buffet to be a big benefactor to the athletic department but it is not going to happen. It is my understanding he is quiet with most of his donations and gives to academic ventures not sports stuff. As he has said before he's great at making people money but not good at donating it. Wish he was a bigger Husker sports fan as he could be a game changer. Our version of Phil Knight or T Boone Pickens.
