First 5 games

Yeah dude. I had the same thought after watching some UCF. It's pretty telling that Frost was showing Fidone cut-ups of Oregon/UCF and telling him this is what they wanted to do at TE. Dude should be a monster at the position once he's healthy. Fucking sucks before that though.
He looks like rehab is going very well, but I doubt they rush it.

I wonder if they can get him ready for last 4 games....

Shit, I don't even know if 2018 is where to look. I'd still say UCF 2017. UCF used empty sets+4 WRs constantly and were super aggressive in the vertical passing game. We haven't really had the depth at WR to do that all since Frost has been here. Look at the receiving stats for UCF 2017 (Otis Anderson played Wandale's position) v. NU 2018. Shit. Warner started 7 games in 2018. That's not the way it's supposed to look.

Trequan Smith, Akins and Gabe Davis are 3 legit NFL dudes. Frost really caught lightening in a bottle being able to have this talent on his roster for 2017. People underestimate how badly you need good receivers in the type of offense Frost runs, you need to be able to have guys that can stretch the field and get open so the defense doesn’t load the box. I’d say the 2019 and 2020 receiving corp was probably the worst Nebraska has had since Solich. Even in 2018 there was no one below Stanley and JD. Thats the one thing that makes me optimistic about 2021 is if Boobie and Montana guy are as advertised, that will completely change this offense, also guys like Martin, Betts, Nixon, Brown, etc are way better than Mike Williams and Kade Warner who were in the same spot on the depth chart in 2018.

My recollection of UCF 2017 was third and long was a lot of YOLO to big dudes who'd go fucking get it

when you have decent talent and you are playing Group of 5 schools every week play calling isn't that hard

look at how well Tim Beck's high school offense worked vs. the Sun belt and Mountain West schools

Yeah, to be fair I don't know how many times you would actually see a true 4 WR look from UCF. Akins was one of their best offensive weapons and they got 850 yards from the TE position. Ideally you're seeing that as a hybrid position in this offense and I think that's what we'll see out of Allen this year. I just don't know that we have ever really done something like run saints / 4 verts out of empty outside of a hand full of times here.
I watched every UCF game in the two year Frost era there, including one in person. They did a ton of 1 back formations, running WRs and RBs in and out of the backfield. The fact that they had four or five great choices on many plays made them very hard to defend. Frost really aggressively playcalled and took 'risks' with play calling. The UCF fans were at first kind of shaking their heads at the play calling but it kept working.

He has been much more predictable without the extra speed and multiple weapons. The WR room this year may not quite be prime time, but it should be much better than last year. That one fact gives me hope. Almost as much as concerns in the RB room give me angst.

McKenzie Milton had incredible touch on his passes - Tommy Armstrong would have thrown a YOLO, Milton would nail the play. His ball placement was spectacular, his decision making speed was going to make him an NFL player. That one player was the catalyst for everything they did under Frost. When Frost got AM, it looked like deja vu all over again. Has not quite panned out that way.

They'll beat Illinois, Fordham, and Buffalo. I know people are all cucky about the Illinois game last season, but the odds of a new staff with new players and a new system coming out and winning game 1 are not good. Could also be a pretty favorable Nebraska crowd after a year of no Skers in person
Guess I should have been all cucky about it. There is no low bar that Frost can't limbo under at this point.
