Drink that fucking Kool-aid. Let the evil inside of you.

If we are bad you can be extra mad.
But if we are good you can be like “fuck y’all man, we the best. I told you all. “
Fuck…don’t drink it, don’t drink it, don’t drink it…

Huskers head coach Scott Frost met the media on Friday, a week into camp and 22 days from his team's opener at Illinois.

"Effort and attitude have been really good, and that's been the best part," said the hoarse-voiced coach. "It's fun coaching this team right now."

Some Quick Hits:

– Frost doesn't know that there's been a surprise defensively, but he's really happy with the communication and effort.

– With the young QBs Logan Smothers and Heinrich Haarberg, "We want to throw everything at them quick. I want to get that first unit available to run anything that we need to run this year early on, and then we'll start scaling it back ... So we're throwing a lot at those guys, particularly Haarberg, but they've picked up right where they've left off in spring and both of them are doing good things."

– Frost has no idea how the backup QB race will shake out right now. "Whatever decision we make for game one might not be the same decision for game two."

– Markese Stepp's progress physically has been a pleasant surprise to Frost. "I still don't think he's quite 100 percent, but he's stacked some pretty good practices together (and) is farther along in knowing the scheme and everything than I expected him to be. I've been really happy with his performance in the first few practices."

– As far as who is where on the depth chart, "We're splitting up groups a lot more, getting young guys a lot more reps. That's the way it's operated at Nebraska a long time. I want a lot of reps to go around. Repetition matters. Repetition matters. So when we split up, the top guys are going together almost the entire time. Most positions I think are pretty solidified as far as who we think it's going to be. There are some others that are up for grabs and we'll keep giving guys chances."

– There will be a scrimmage in two days, probably a shorter one, and probably one longer one next week before turning full attention to Illinois.

– The punter and kickoff specialist competition is not settled yet, according to Frost. But the coach loves the intensity and attention to it so far. A couple days ago, Mike Dawson told him that the Huskers had gotten 138 reps of individual technique during a 10-minute period on special teams. "Man, they're working hard at it in those drills. We can't find any LOAFs at all, people taking a play off in those drills. The guys know how important that is and that be a little difference for us in several games."

There are three guys still competing for the kickoff job, Frost said.

– Frost said the Huskers did a lot of stats analysis from last year and they were second in rushing, second in league in efficiency per play, and near the bottom of the league in points per drive. He credited opposing defense, "but I think that discrepancy is largely is just mistakes that we made ourselves: negative plays, turnovers, bad snaps, penalties. That's where our focus is entirely as an organization, as a team. I want a team that never beats itself and plays tough."

– Frost imagines six receivers will play for the most part, with a couple others sprinkled in. "Still trying to figure out who those guys are exactly, but there are a lot of guys I think we could rely on to go in the game right now and make plays."

– Tom Osborne, George Darlington and Tony Samuel are all former Husker coaches who have been around this fall. "We're a Husker family, and certainly Coach Osbotne has been a leader of that for a long time, and we love it when he's out there. But it's also good to see the other guys. Adam Trieu was at practice today. It's great to see a lot of guys that coached and wore Nebraska uniforms back at practice being around our guys."

– Frost said the Huskers are pushing the young guys hard and coaches are tough on them. "So there's a little bit of separation between the guys who have been there, done that, and the guys that are learning it for the first time." But the reps are going to keep rolling along. "We're throwing them in the deep end, but we need to know really fast which ones will sink and which ones will swim."

– Randolph Kpai is going to be out a little longer than some other guys. He had a sling on his arm when media was around practice Wednesday. "He's doing some really good things in camp too so we're really excited about his future. Hate when those things happen, but we'll be without him for a little bit." Ben Stille mentioned Kpai in Indianapolis as a young guy who really caught his eye

– Is Gabe Ervin ready to contribute in three weeks? "Yeah, I think Gabe's ready. The one thing I would say about him is he came in as an adult. He was very mature in his approach to everything when he came in. That's usually the telltale mark of if they're going to be ready to play early on. He's done a good job learning it, he competes, and he'll definitely be in the mix at that spot."

– Running backs in general have done a good job in pass pro, Frost said. "And that's a tough assignment, first thing, knowing who your guys are, making sure you're disciplined with your eyes. But part of it too is just being willing to stick your nose in and get the job done. We've got some bigger backs now who are more capable of that..."

– Frost said his chief of staff Gerrod Lambrecht is moving on to pursue another business opportunity. Andrew Sims, who was director of football operations, will step into that opening. Sims was a guy Frost said had other opportunities himself, so he's glad to keep him.
