End of Hoiberg era mirroring end of Miles era

I 100% agree with the idea @HerbRedman does not. I apologize if my post led anyone to believe that as I believe Herb is a very good poster

I agree he’s a great poster, but maybe he does have it out for Hoiberg 😂. Here's another fun thread started just last March—it was right in the middle of the late-season collapse, so I get the frustration. Still, you can see there is still a lot of angst against Hoiberg less than a year after their first NCAA tournament appearance in a decade and after Fred was named Big Ten Co-Coach of the Year the previous year.

If you were NU AD would you move on from Hoiberg?

If NU goes through a rough patch at any point this season, I’m sure a lot of this will come bubbling back up—most teams have one of those stretches every year, so it’ll be interesting to watch.

My official take on Hoiberg has been that he’s NEVER been a bad basketball coach. I can’t say that enough, he’s never been bad at coaching basketball.

But it was extremely clear those first years that he was most certainly a terrible program builder and culture builder; and it led him to a spot where he most certainly could have found himself out of a job.

The reason he wasn’t, in my opinion, is because 1) A guy with his resume you’re going to allow him a chance to retool 2) Turd had other priorities and 3) He was willing to admit his mistakes and do what needed to be done.

During the 22-23 season it was clear in January that things were still in jeopardy. But the calendar turned to February and that group started to play some really good basketball. I’ve said multiple times if you give me the basketball this program has played from 2/1/2023 to now sign me up for eternity.

We should have seen this type of basketball earlier in Fred’s tenure. No excuse. But we are getting it now and I couldn’t be happier. Fred has out-dueled some really good coaches the last 3 years. Honestly, he appears to have guys like Brad Underwood’s number. He’s coached circles around him the last two times we’ve played them.

We do have to acknowledge one last problem with Fred and that is that his teams really struggle in the month of January. He’s something like 10-16 the last 3 years in this month. This is the time of year we have to really lock in. If you can find a way to finish 4-3 or even 5-2 your tournament status is locked in and you’re playing for a solid seed.

…and that ‘smarter than everyone’ group most likely hasn’t dedicated any investment or assistance in any way to improve outcomes.

They are just entitled to it.

Fred is a very high level basketball coach. The early years were largely personnel mistakes both in who he put on the staff and who they put on the team. But even when the teams weren't good, he ran good shit for them.

Not really much to say about the current assistants because prep and adjustments in game are both real high level even on nights they start slow.

But they've obviously sat down and thought a lot about roster construction, the conference, and the type of players they need to get to win. A real great season here would give them all the momentum they need to sell the program as a place to go if you truly just want to ball

This is exactly where I’m at as well. By my count, NU is 64–28 since 2/1/2023, which works out to roughly a 70% winning percentage. Expand the window to the entire 2022–23 season through today, and NU is still 74–41, a 64% winning percentage. There isn’t a Nebraska basketball fan alive who could look at those results and seriously argue the coach should be fired.

The system truly is an NBA system. Look at the shot charts. We take threes or we shoot in the paint.

What this year has shown me is we’ve found a formula that we can replicate that should allow us to scale. We need to leverage this year to get us more high level players while also not overlooking guys like Sam and Jacobson.

Hitting the role players piece is huge. A lot of those guys do a stellar job every night of hitting defensive rotations. This team has mid shot blockers at best, other than maybe Berke, and has basically erased the rim for the opposing team and that's because they always have someone in the way

I agree with the shot blocking piece. Which is odd because I think we blocked shots more and better against MSU than I’ve seen in a while.

The weird thing is that Friday I don’t know that we played well. Had Frager not gotten T-Ed up we may have rallied and started to put the clamps on. But honestly, not one of our better games.

We missed quite a few wide open threes that game. MSU lucky it wasn’t a 20 point beat down. Crowd noise was insane and msu couldn’t handle it

Tbf though, the creator of this thread doesn’t fit all this shit bashing persona. @HerbRedman almost always comes with level headed, well thought out, and well articulated takes and comments.
I’m sure he’s the first to put his hand up and gladly say he was wrong on this one.
I actually never called for Hoiberg to be fired in this thread. Or any thread. I said it was looking like the team was playing toward Hoiberg's dismissal. Saying it's looking like a coach is heading toward dismissal is different than saying "if I were AD I would fire him now" - which I have never said about Hoiberg.

Saying Hoiberg has been close to getting dismissed is not a hot take. That's a fact. He was close.

This thread was 1/2 about venting and 1/2 about putting a reverse jinx on the team. Which I said right here:

My reverse jinx worked! You're all welcome. 😎🏆

I'll take that all day
