End of Game Play Calling

I think all the things you say are warranted and make sense. This isn't directed at you, but I truly think a lot of people that are mad about the screens think that Satt is up in the box calling it over and over and that's just not what is happening. I played roughly 2 decades ago and I caught dozens of those and never was one called in the huddle. Similar to the conversations about the "screens" to Fidone first game of the year.

But we need to have something other than those screens as a counter when the box is packed is where i'm at. The fact we brought in these big bodies WRs in the portal and they are getting rag-dolled by corners when blocking is crazy to me. Have some pride.

We gotta take care of UCLAbia at home. They scare me a bit, their record is a tad deceiving. After that figure out a way to get your 7th win.
My criticism isn't so much of the "called" screens. It's the nature of, well, if you get pressure, this is you check. We're checking to calls that we quite frankly don't execute at any sort of serviceable level. If we ran shallow screens, tunnels, jailbreaks, etc. and have had a lot of success with it, regardless of pressure or not. Then yeah. Just feels like we're pigeon holing ourselves into getting into bad plays.

Plus, the whole, insert HH after we just ripped off successive plays, annoys me.

We play for the same team? We also ran 10-12 bubble and hash screens a game and 0% were called in the huddle the call in the huddle was always 30(inside or outside zone)/50(bubble and hash screens) /60. (3step drop) check with me. We also had an experienced qb as well as the ability to execute those screens at a high level. We were not running the 30/50/60 check with me all the time when we couldn’t block it or when we had a qb the coaches didn’t trust to call the right one.

Honestly feel like no matter who the OC is, we've been trying to heavily implement the screen pass for like the past 20 years with very little success. If I had a nickel for every time I've said stop calling that damn play over the last 20 years, well, I'd have a shitload of nickels

I think the "experienced" QB thing is another variable people seem to forget. We have a five star, but an experienced QB gets more freedom within an offense to maybe not do those screens and possibly check out altogether after he builds rapport and trust with the OC.

That's where i'm at, it's basically offensive football nowadays. Satterfield isn't calling the fades to the guys, the defense is dictating it. He's not calling the screens to Fidone or the WRs, the defense is dictating it. Satt runs it, Frost ran it, Langsdorf ran it, Beck ran it, Callahan ran it, it's just what offenses do.

I still can't understand why our WRs aren't good at blocking out there, it's really easy. You just have to cut off 90 degrees of the field and the defense can go the other 270.

Agree completely. If these screens/bubble screens are the default check down options given to DR, that is on the OC and coaching. Adjustments need to be made - put in some easier to execute check downs that make sense to take advantage of how defenses are lined up. We have ample evidence the screens will not be blocked well at all and often end up in a loss, or no gain at best. It just isn't working.

We do need to beat UCLAbia, and I agree their record is not necessarily a reflection of what they may be on the field when we play them this saturday. I have not really watched them much, so my pool of info is not there to have a good feel on how this game will go. I do think we should win, and even could win by a comfortable margin if we play with the same intensity and want-to as we did against OSU. But we still have to adjust things offensively to running more stuff that works vs stuff thas has been proven it doesn't work. Defensively, I just hope we don't play bend don't break - be aggressive and put UCLAbia on their heels.

It's a win we really, really need to get.

I think part of it is that opposing defenses know what we are going to check to, so it is sniffed out most of the time. Which makes the blocks harder to execute. Still, the blocking on these has been abysmal - just awful all year and truly like you said, for a decade or longer this stuff has not been working for us. Over several different coaching staffs, also. Mind boggling.

I remember in the preseason when certain posters were indignant at the mere suggestion that inserting HH situationally to run a set package would be a negative.

I didn’t think it would be a bad idea if they just ran Q power with him. But when he assholed his blocker in the read game on the keep. I’m just like. What the hell. Get vertical.
