Breaking Dana Holgerson Joins NU Staff As Consultant - “Role Will Evolve As Season Goes On”

Please keep in mind Holgerson is not going to be the head coach. If he is going to have input on play calling - which I hope - he doesn’t necessarily have to change the playbook, just how and when things are called. That makes a big difference. The move is more than I expected Rhule to make. Good for him. He knows the commits we have and those we are in on, is at stake.
I think he's probably at least as if not more concerned with keeping Raiola and even Barney.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I don't like the idea of panic hiring an OC in waiting in general.

I do like the fire it lights under your coaches asses though and Holgerson is a great offensive mind. Not a bad idea to fill your roster of assistants with competent coaches and Holgerson is definitely over-qualified in that regard.

Feeling better about this if we can keep him sober on Saturdays. Reading a lot of the reaction and one thing that is intriguing is the idea of him using a lot more 4 WR sets and a lot fewer 2 WR sets than we do. The 2 WR sets cannot be helping us get guys open -- just no stress on the defensive backfield, especially given the guys we roll out there.

I'm not sure if we have the personnel to be dangerous with 4 WRs, but it would be an opportunity to see some younger speed on the field more often.

To your quote of personnel to be dangerous with 4 WRs....not sure we have the offensive line to block with 4 WR spread and/or the talent...either one.

Pass blocking has actually been a strength of the OL.

We’ve got to be more creative with the run game. I’m all for trying to formation the defense into mismatches and numbers disadvantages.

Yep. I think we really telegraph the runs with our formations. We aren’t surprising anyone and we aren’t putting defenses into difficult situations.

Maybe...but as of late those blitzes sure do get home on a regular basis.

We’ve got an insider working on a project that should help put this into context.

I don’t disagree with either of you. But hopefully you’ll be able to see there are schematic reasons

They are getting home because either our WRs can’t get open, our plays take too long to develop, or Raiola is holding on to the ball too long when he knows a blitz is coming. Or a combination of all of those. I have personally thought the OL has held up well and constantly find myself yelling at Raiola to get the ball out. And again, it may not be his fault if he has no where to go with the ball. Point being that I haven’t felt like the OL was the issue.

I agree…and they are running 2 WR routes, with and RB to chip block and a TE.

Remove the TE and be left we 5 OL…and those blitzes that don’t get picked up only make his situation, slow blinking, and yips worse.

Better be some quick release points in those routes.

I do understand that. Scheme is huge. And if we spread out 4 WR, that may very well be what he needs and changes all that…and it could exacerbate it.

It will be a huge upgrade if we can just stop tipping plays by our personnel, formations and alignments. This shit is elementary and should get the entire offensive staff fired.

Gman is 100% correct. Weve got some very easy and elementary tips by alignment. Opposing defenses know what we are running before we snap the ball with dramatic accuracy and ease.

Our OC has been completely figured out. Defenses and opposing DC's know pretty much everything we are going to do pre-snap. We need a completely new OC mind who can call plays and scheme well enough to not be the most predictable offense in CFB. Square peg, round hole, does not work. Being so simple and easy to read, does not work. 2 or 3 well designed plays to counter what a defense is loading up on a game, is not nearly enough. We need better OC coaching.

That doesn't mean we don't need better talent, or execution. But our players are constantly put into situations that are lose/lose - it is a disgrace how badly our OC has done. Even at .4 mil that would still be 400K more than he is worth.

Let's hope Holgerson can push for adjustments these last 3 games, because as is, our offense is near the worst in CFB. And we have way more talent than that. Should be a top 50 offense at least, even given some talent holes.

We've got a maximum of 4 games left, so guys who are redshirting should be an option.

Part of me wonders if this all just window dressing. I like that we are bringing in someone new to possibly jump start a stagnant offense, but I'm starting to be skeptical.

Did they do this just as a way to prevent the 1890 donations from drying up? We had some momentum and 5 wins but now we are on a 3 game skid and people are starting to hide their checkbook, so let's slap a fresh coat of paint on our jalopy and see if we can keep the money flow from totally stopping. The idea is we will bring in some names people know and make it look like we are doing something then against USC we will trot out the same predictable nonsense.

I don't like being this negative, but it is on my mind.
