So was Pickett until this year. Hoping for some Whipple magic.
Whipple had 3 years with Pickett - Not a 1 and done like Brock Purdy. Pickett may have blown up this year - but that's the product of work over time.

So wait…a guy coaching up a QB over time to develop them into a high quality player? Yes please.
100% the Whipple hire has grown on me quickly. I am actually jacked about it - but I don't want to see us go after someone who has been what some describe as "meh" that has 1 year to play. Probably not going to be a "Pickett" type situation.

Which is why I want Thompson even more - an athlete that was on a team with a trash defense that has 2 years left to play? That's what I'm talking about.

Like I said earlier, if any of Nebraska's rivals would have hired an OC whose team had just won a power 5 conference, that just developed a QB into a heisman finalist and first round pick, there would be all kinds of bitching and moaning on the message boards about how that rival is hiring like a "big boy" program and Nebraska is getting left behind.

I don't love Whipple, but he coached at Miami and I tend to hate all coaches who coached at Miami. I totally understand the hire and I think we should be excited about it.

Agree across the board. Thompson would be great add.

I think you need a bridge because I think we have some very raw, but very talented QBs in the mix.

You pull Thompson, Purdy and Torres this year that would be a very nice haul. Get a bridge guy, a guy who is exposed to college life and talented that can compete for the #2 job and then a guy who has a very high ceiling, but needs some time.

I think it was the hire Frost needed to make.
  • Older/very experienced
  • Experienced as a HC and calls a game from those eyes.
    • He had a few quotes from his time at pitt that I heard and was very impressed. About calling the game to make sure his QB was comfortable.
    • Also, managing the game to play complimentary football. I never felt Frost/Lubick/Walters ever did a good job here unless they had the other team out gunned....
  • Detail oriented. This is from my source who claimed he basically had the offense run 4 plays over the entire team session till they got them right.
  • Elite at developing QBs. Probably one of the best QB coaches we had a shot at getting.
  • I think Whipple is a guy who can handle as much of the offense as Frost is willing to give up.
    • Which I hope Frost basically helps put together the game plan and then gets away.
  • Finally I think he is a strong personality who isn't a yes man.

I was really worried when I was told Harrell was the leader. I felt like he was basically Frost and we needed to hire somebody who helped Frost in areas he wasn't strong.

The guy I talk to had Whipple as his #1 and it is the reason I put him on my hot board the earliest of anybody. I am excited about this hire because I think the combo of Whipple and Frost could work very well.

Completely agree - love that our bridge guy could be a two year guy if we snag Thompson

DB posted that on RSS. So it’s factual. Charles got here yesterday. Casey should be in town now.

OU - Just got Gabriel and I don’t think they’ll press further for Thompson.

Auburn - Is hosting the kid from aTm now as we speak.

Mizzou - No idea. There is nothing out there about their situation.

Indiana - He has not been to.

Nebraska is the only school he has visited out of those listed plus Oklahoma.
