Florida Atlantic has a new quarterback to add to the position group. On Saturday, former Central Michigan quarterback Daniel Richardson announced his intentions to transfer to FAU.
Richardson, a product of Miami (Fla.) Carol City High School, finished his time at Central Michigan with 32 games played and over 700 passes thrown.
Over his career, Richardson has thrown for 5,391 yards and 43 touchdowns with just 13 interceptions. His best season to date comes in 2021 when he threw for 2,633 yards and 24 touchdowns in 9 starts

During the spring game, the three quarterbacks shared the snaps and threw a similar amount of passes. All three quarterbacks finished the day with a passing touchdown, and according to Herman, all were impressive.
On the box score, Richardson was the clear leader of the group, completing 18 of his 22 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns, all game-highs. On the field, Richardson showcased the qualities of a starting quarterback. Some of his highlight throws included a deep pass to tight end Jackson Sumlin for a touchdown and an impressive throw between two defenders to Je'Quan Burton for a 28-yard touchdown.
FAU has just three scholarship quarterbacks, which is a severe numbers issue for the most valuable position on the field. It’s even more of a numbers problem when you look at their FBS experience.
Daniel Richardson is the only quarterback on FAU’s roster who has played in an FBS game. Michael Johnson Jr. has been in camps, but he’s mostly been a scout team player. Johnson also missed the entirety of spring camp rehabbing an injury.
Walk-on quarterback Ben Ballard has some skills, but relying on him to be a starter would be DEFCON 2 level concern.
True freshman Luke Rucker is joining the fold in the fall, but trusting a freshman is a major risk. Think about how many true freshman quarterbacks were high-level starters last season.
FAU has placed lofty expectations on their offense, and they must deliver. That’ll have to start with adding another scholarship quarterback with experience.
