So Betts went from not liking football anymore to being all-in on the coach that has them there 16 hours a day?

I don’t know what the story is but there’s a good one in there somewhere.
Seems he likes structure. And he likes it coming from someone he trusts to treat him well and have his best interest in mind while caring about him.

I hope so. But if so he’d be the first kid I’ve ever seen that needed structure that responded this well to structure.

It’d make more sense to me that Betts and Mickey just didn’t vibe for whatever reason. Or Palmers BDE put Betts off.

Maybe he ate 20 pounds of muscles

I'm sure the structure definitely helps, but I also really think that this has more to do with Betts growing up more than anything else. I just texted a close family member of Zavier's and his words were, "Well, surprisingly he grew up... amazing when you actually try and go to class." He again emphasized that he believes that's Zavier hit rock bottom.

DB has always been close to the kid and he'll tell you that Mickey's tough love approach just wasn't going to work with Zavier. He needed an environment where the coaches actually care about him and not just about how well he plays on the field.

That’s awesome news.

Did he grow up and ask to come back, or was he asked to come back and the environment caused him to grow up?

If it’s the latter I’d say it’s a good sign for what’s to come for Nebraska football.

Also, if there’s increased accountability like we keep hearing about, it’s really not that crazy for a freak athlete with a big frame to put on a good chunk of muscle pretty quickly if he’s taking the weight room really seriously for the first time.

That’s what I wondered, it’s not necessarily a negative on Mickey or Zavier - just seemed like it could have been a bad fit.

If Frost would have actually gotten to know his players, Zavier might not have felt like no one there cared about him. I will never understand how Frost was ever coached by Osborne. He didn't take anything from what made him a good coach.

Zavier approached my contact on Christmas day, owning his mistakes and wanting to try to get back in football. My contact was very skeptical, but hopefully. At that time they assumed their bridges were burned and that's why he entered the transfer portal. They were hours away from boarding a flight to visit Pitt when Rhule reached out and asked them to visit Nebraska and meet the new staff instead.

I read more than one post (when he quit) that referred to his close circle of friends. Apparently, none of them were athletes or involved in sports in any way, shape or form. Maybe he’s rethought who he should be hanging out with when away from football.

.

might have been Rhules first press conferences where he mentioned that he reached out to both Betts and Jimari Butler when they put their names in the portal. In a round about way he said ICG asked to return and he granted the return, didn’t mention if he would be kept on scholarship.

So true. Frost is almost the polar opposite of T.O.. Not sure how or why T.O. supported Frost through all of this BS. What a clusterfuck of a mess Frost was as a coach, a person, and what he did to this program. Just was an entitled ass almost the entire time.

Seems we have almost the opposite of Frost with Rhule now. A true professional who is more than a sound byte, seems to be a real good guy with a real strong vision and ability to lead young men. Feels good, man.
