Latest on several of Nebraska's remaining 2024 targets
Where are things sitting for Nebraska with some of its top remaining targets?

Nebraska already sits at 24 commitments for the 2024 class which in some years would mean the Huskers are largely done until December.
But
Matt Rhule and his staff are far from finished as it relates to trying to lock up future Nebraska players and the coaching staff continues to work on several targets, including some who have already made the official visit and others that are still looking to stop by Memorial Stadium.
Here’s a quick run through of where things stand for a few of the names to know:
Brandon Baker — The No. 1 tackle in the country per 247Sports has already been to Lincoln a couple fo times, but had told 247Sports in July that he’s looking to get back to Nebraska for an official visit. That trip looks like it will be for Rhule’s first home game in Lincoln, which promises to be a good atmosphere.
While things in recruiting are entirely different and Scott Frost’s time in Lincoln as a coach ended poorly, the first game he every coached featured a big crop of visitors, including several that ultimately ended up picking the Huskers. It’ll take more than a big atmosphere for Baker, but the Huskers at least have a foot in the door, and sometimes that can lead to surprises.
Caleb Benning — This in-state defensive back is the top uncommitted player in the state and seems, for now, to largely be down to Kansas State and Nebraska.
The Huskers have had Benning on campus several times this summer and he visited a few times in the spring as well. The two sides are very familiar and the defensive back from Omaha Westside has good relationships with Nebraska assistants
Evan Cooper and
Tony White.
But for whatever the reason, Nebraska hasn’t been able to get Benning to close down his recruitment and that’s because Kansas State has done a nice job staying on the defensive back as well. Expect a couple more visits this fall and wait to see if other teams enter the mix for the defensive back, who continues to be nonplussed about making a commitment.
Grant Brix — Out of everyone on the list Brix could be the closest to making a commitment, but no one can truly say that with any certainty because the big offensive lineman from Logan, Cockeye has played a masterful game of recruiting poker.
Even when Brix talks for interviews he rarely gives much away, but the lineman is clearly interested in Kansas State, Nebraska and Oklahoma, and for now has every intention of ending this recruitment before the start of his own football season. It’s still a muddled picture, but Nebraska got the last official visit and the last unofficial visit. The Huskers’ commits have made Brix a priority throughout July since his visit and the staff has always viewed the lineman as an important piece to what they want to build. Will that be enough? Looks like we’re going to find out shortly.
Nuku Mafi — Checking with area sources here, but Mafi still seems to be a go for a September official visit. Perhaps that changes if the Huskers land Brix, but for now the Utah offensive lineman is set to visit and if the door remains open in Lincoln, he might just walk through it.
Keep an eye out for Oregon though as network sources say the Ducks, who missed out on
Preston Taumua to Nebraska, are keeping Mafi warm and could pivot in that direction pending on how other offensive line dominos tumble.
Jayshawn Ross — Quietly becoming one of Nebraska’s fans newest members of the 2024 wish list, this edge rusher from the same school as Huskers commit
Keelan Smith seems to be trending toward NU.
Ross is a fascinating defender with a great frame, good athleticism and at times he looked like the best defensive lineman at an Under Armour camp in Kansas City that featured some high-end talent.
The recruitment has been unique. Ross told Husker247 at the camp that he’s less involved in the day-to-day recruiting stuff than most recruits and that’s largely proven true as he hasn’t used an official visit and seems to have really narrowed his options.
Regardless of the circumstances a Nebraska team that has always coveted pass rush help would be a tremendous fit for a talented kid out of Kansas City. Keep an eye on this one this month.
Amare Sanders — A June official visitor, Sanders has been relatively quiet ever since visiting Lincoln, but the Huskers haven’t been quiet with the defender. Sanders said he’s hearing regularly from the Huskers and he’s got a grouping that includes Nebraska with Oregon State and Virginia. Sanders said he's likely going to make a decision this month while potentially still taking visits after.
Could Nebraska take another defensive back? Absolutely. Numbers aren’t a concern and the Huskers seem to be particularly high on Sanders’ upside as a recent football convert from basketball. His long arms and athleticism allowed for a quick transition last season with plenty of potential left for the defender.
Devoux Tuataga — This intriguing edge rusher from Utah came to to Lincoln at the end of July for an unofficial visit and then also made a trip over to Oregon as well.
Early reports have BYU as the team to watch for Tuataga with Oregon as the dark horse waiting in the wings. It’s fair to wonder if the Huskers wrap up Ross, if its interest in this edge rusher would dip a little bit as well.
