But when you think about it their career paths are crazy similar. From fast rise, to professional bad/mediocrity (Hoiberg did have a playoff appearance) and then to Nebraska.

I don't know why it's different to me, but it's different to me. With what we've seen from Nebraska football do you think Rhule can get Nebraska to top 10 status in a regular season by 2029? That's essentially what Hoiberg has done right?

We have a nice recruiting class for 2027 so far. If we actually have a top 10 class at the end of the season then I think that warrants keeping Rhule around.

If we're comparing the two, then comparing their results during the first few seasons seems like the only relevant way to put those apples & oranges on the same scale.

I think it's unlikely Rhule gets us to top 10 status in a regular season by 2029.

I also would've bet all my assets that Hoiberg wouldn't have been able to get us where we're at.

Okay - Rhule is 0-9 against ranked teams in 3 years. Fred is 6-3 against ranked teams the last two years. Are those two things equal considering the level of financial support provided to each?

You completely made up words and tried to spin it as if I was saying NU’s 2021 season was better than last year’s NU season. All I said was that there were signs early in Fred’s tenure despite them losing games that the team was well coached and that even translated into beating a few teams they clearly were not better than. If you watched the team you could see that.

Name a single game Nebraska has played under Rhule where we’ve gotten a result equivalent to Fred winning at a top 10 team as a 12.5 point underdog? NU has won 3 games as an underdog under Rhule - @ Illinois in 2023 (+3), Purdue at home in 2023 (+1.5), and @ UCLA in 2025 (+2). Name any time you’ve watched NU play this past year and been like “wow even though they are losing that game I see us coming together and see the vision”. You simply can’t.

As others have said, it's a lot easier to pull off upsets in basketball than in football.

But overall, we are BOTH disappointed by the performance in big games by Matthew despite much greater resources than Fred.

We know we can’t get rid of Rhule next season (and with the schedule we have we will be lucky to win 7 games imo) but we should all just sit back and relax and let Rhule give this a try to turn this program around.

I’ve been negative of Rhule for a season plus (I always said if you college football coaches can’t figure it out in 2 years they won’t make it work 90% of the time) but we can’t look at Indiana and expect the same results.

Rhule builds his programs in different ways and that’s who we currently have. We can’t force him to be Cigs and be a guru over talent evaluation and film study, that’s not Rhule’s way. We need to support our coach in the process he is going through and trust in faith we can get it figured out by 2030.

Rhule is a slow smoke brisket and Cig is a fat cheddar delicious bratwurst, we gotta let that brisket smoke and hope it doesn’t over cook and trust in the process of the 28 hour cook and not depend on the 30 minute grill of the brat.

It’s the long game we are playing at Nebraska…this is a special place. No place like Nebraska….we build things the right way, not the cheap asshole way a cheddar brat can treat ya when it explodes its cheddar goodness all over the grill, but we are methodical in the way we cook…and we need to let the preacher cook. This might be Nebraska’s last supper if we don’t.

But since this has sparked a legitimate discussion, the problem with the "just needs more time" argument is how you determine how much time is enough time. It's unrealistic to think that any coach given enough years will get the results you want, so when is enough, enough? Fred's a great story this season but in a way it's almost as improbable as Cignetti making the playoffs his first year. There's always an outside chance some dude will completely turn it around in year 7 or something but IMO you've gotta play the probabilities, see what you have after 3-4 years and if it's not good enough you iterate. We shouldn't be scared to iterate. You can't get lucky if you never take risk to begin with.

I'd say at this point he hasn't given a reason to be given more than 4 years but I bet he gets 5 years.

Unless they show a huge jump in 2026 what can Rhule point to? Doesn't help that he'll be doing that while installing a new defense, with a less talented QB and a tougher schedule.

He was 2-22 in the first three years, the two wins are the two I call out @ Ohio State and @ Wisconsin. While I hate “qualifying things - 9 of those games were in the Covid season which is pretty much ignored if you know anything about NU basketball (they played 11 games in the month of February alone FFS).

Replacing that 2020-21 season with 2022-23 for his first three “normal” seasons is 3-16 against ranked teams.

Nebraska played 11 games in 27 days in February and was decimated by COVID cases. NU was one of the most impacted teams, playing multiple games on 1 day rest in a row including road games in the middle of the day on week days. It wasn’t even remotely a normal season.
