If we can give Hoiberg time why not Rhule?

We know we can’t get rid of Rhule next season (and with the schedule we have we will be lucky to win 7 games imo) but we should all just sit back and relax and let Rhule give this a try to turn this program around.

I’ve been negative of Rhule for a season plus (I always said if you college football coaches can’t figure it out in 2 years they won’t make it work 90% of the time) but we can’t look at Indiana and expect the same results.

Rhule builds his programs in different ways and that’s who we currently have. We can’t force him to be Cigs and be a guru over talent evaluation and film study, that’s not Rhule’s way. We need to support our coach in the process he is going through and trust in faith we can get it figured out by 2030.

Rhule is a slow smoke brisket and Cig is a fat cheddar delicious bratwurst, we gotta let that brisket smoke and hope it doesn’t over cook and trust in the process of the 28 hour cook and not depend on the 30 minute grill of the brat.

It’s the long game we are playing at Nebraska…this is a special place. No place like Nebraska….we build things the right way, not the cheap asshole way a cheddar brat can treat ya when it explodes its cheddar goodness all over the grill, but we are methodical in the way we cook…and we need to let the preacher cook. This might be Nebraska’s last supper if we don’t.

Even when we sucked under Hoiberg you could tell we were a well coached team. The sets and offense we run has always been A++. A lot of Hoiberg’s issues first couple years was letting Matt A. have control over the roster.

For me, Rhule has yet to show he is a competent coach in the product he puts out on the field, development and recruiting.

With that said, give him a couple more years.

Hire a coach, let them know they are expected to make the best possible staff hires at all times, give them money to make those hires, let them know they are expected to make the best possible portal moves at all times, give them money for that. ignore them for months on end. Fire them only if they don't listen to said rules, get too angry, get too drunk, or get too horny. It's really pretty simple.

Quite frankly no one cares about basketball like football, and the basketball standards are always low, so the last Ls and recycling of coaches/players in basketball don’t legitimately bother people. It’s just something to watch and talk about that’s apart of Husker Athletics

I still think Rhule can do this, but he’s not making it easy on himself or the fanbase.

I’m encouraged he has the stones to admit he’s made a mistake with a coaching hire, but I’m equally disturbed by the fact that he keeps making them. I like Aurich, but he’s working with a limited group on the DL. How does that play out? We struggle in year one (as most of Aurich’s first year teams have) and he gets canned? I can defend Rhule's slow walking the hiring of a DL coach, but then we hire a guy we likely could have hired the day after the season ended or the DC is hired. It doesn’t make any sense.

On offense, let Holgorsen be Holgorsen or get someone else. If you want to run the football and your OC isn’t great at running the football, what the hell are you doing? Wade is a big upgrade as OL coach, so let’s do something with the talent at hand. I like what we’ve done in the QB room, like the WR room, think I’ll grow to like the RB room if they progress like I think they will, but I’m looking at the ’26 schedule and trying to figure out how the roster gets to a third year at 7-5. I honestly don’t see it.

I have no choice but to ride it out for 2026 and barring a 4 wins or less record, we’ll at least start 2027 with Rhule in the Head Coaches office. ’26 doesn’t set up well for a big leap, but at minimum NU needs to try to hold serve. Can we do that? Man. I honestly haven’t seen anything that makes me think we’re ready to take that step.

Are we a better football program than when Frost was wandering through the building? Yes. Problem is I don’t know how close to our ‘Rhule Ceiling’ we are.

We say this every time and it never happens

This 100%. Fred took a while to get the roster adjusted to the Big Ten and whatnot but you could absolutely see that we were incredibly well coached and were a PITA for other team’s to deal with despite our lack of talent

2021-22 team ended 10-21 but finished the year winning 3 straight games including two straight road wins against top 25 teams @ 23 Ohio State and @ 10 Wisconsin. That Wisconsin team needed to win that game to win the Big Ten regular season title on senior day for them and they lost at home to a 9 win NU team lmao

2022-23 team ended 16-16 but finished the year 5-2 in their last 7 games including a win @ Cockeye, won at Pickle Smoochers

2023-24 team made the NCAA tournament

2024-25 team had the mid/late-season swoon but Fred again exceeded expectations. We won @ 14 Pickle Smoochers again and had 3 top 25 wins in Big Ten play to make it 4 total for the season

Multiple top 25 wins every year even in down years, have won 3 of 4 against our biggest rival, and the team was obviously well coached. Now that the roster has the level of talent and depth needed, the team has popped. But it was always very apparent Fred and his staff were doing well. I don’t have the standings numbers in front of me but I’m pretty sure we’ve exceeded our pre-season Big Ten standings projections every year since 2022.

IMO, the situations aren’t really comparable. If Rhule was going 6-6 or 7-5 but we were beating Cockeye and pulling off a top 25 upset win as part of that I feel like this message would resonate more. But we’re coming off a year where we lost the biggest games on our schedule (again), we’ve lost something like 29 straight to ranked opponents and just lost to Cockeye by 24 at home as part of losing 3 straight games to end the year by 21+ points. We haven’t gone over our pre-season Vegas win total in something like 10 years and I don’t believe we’ve finished above the pre-season projected standings since Rhule has arrived.

Whereas Fred’s teams were always playing their best at the end of the regular season, Rhule’s teams are always playing their worst. Rhule is 2-10 in November games at NU and we’ve yet to beat someone we “shouldn’t” beat. Fred had 9 win teams winning road games against top 10 opponents. They’re not really comparable situations IMO.

Also, covid.

It slowed Fred's start.

People forget he left that Big Ten tournament game against IU in his first year and people thought he had covid/might be dying. Guy couldn’t go on the road to recruit for basically 2 years to a place that at the time was borderline impossible to recruit to with our history and inability to travel.

By the end of the 2021 season you could see it. People may have gotten a bit impatient towards the middle part of 2021-22 season but the end to the year I think showed that Fred was figuring it out. Combine that with the jump the next two years and things were off to the races.

Pulling off an upset in basketball is like a 100x easier
