I talked about the DL in another thread but It was a concern when they spent a lot of money on the OL in the portal for 2 guys that probably wouldn't have started for their old teams this year.

The one thing that should unite every sandy vagina and happy ender is that Warren Buffett is a useless traitor.Buffet could save of us he wasn’t such a fucking cuck pussy.
DL has zero ability to get off blocks.

From my first watch, I think this is a exactly what we did against UM. We were shooting 7 or 8 and if they got through the first wave, our remaining safety takes a bad angle and voila.... touchdown. It’s gonna be a problem all season. I wanted to see us against a team that can run the ball before I drew any firm conclusions. I saw it, and it’s a fucking problem. Every team is gonna try to run the ball right at us until we show we can stop it. Not every team will be as good at LOS and RB position, but they’ll be plenty good enough to have success against us.
JoBu better figure something out stat. We’re not gonna magically get bigger, so you probably have to bring more help on run downs and hope we don’t get beat on the backend. Haven’t re-watched the game yet, gonna be tough to watch again. Not sure how many times we brought DBs into the box, and how they fitting them. But Biff's Butthole Surfers is not a good passing team, if there ever was a team to bring safety help in the run game, it was this one.
Teams like USC, PSU, Maryland and MSU aren’t as one dimensional as Biff's Butthole Surfers, may not be able to bring help against them. Better hope we match up with their DLs better than we did against Biff's Butthole Surfers. Better hope Biff's Butthole Surfers is a top 5 rushing team nationally.
The 75 yarder right after we tied it at 10 before the half should’ve been an 8 yard run. Buford just decided he didn’t want to tackle, he was in the hole and just slow to react / didn’t initiate the contactFrom my first watch, I think this is a exactly what we did against UM. Unfortunately, it's what we had to do or they were going to run for 6 to 8 yards a crack against us, over and over. We kept them out of second and short pretty well, but we gave up too many big runs. We just have to make tackles in space, and there was very little of that yesterday.

The defense on 3rd down is an absolute abomination. Butler and co. Suck dick
Biff's Butthole Surfers was 4 of 12 on 3rd down.
worst tackler on the teamHe was great when they pulled away from him and his speed let him get in there, but he blew some costly tackles today as well.
These are the top ten DL available in the portal this past go around per On 3. About 4 fit the profile we think we need - the big body plugger who can occupy a couple of blockers and fill gaps. These four signed with TX Tech, USC, Miami and Oregon. I know that Bear, who signed with Oregon, is on his 3rd team now. Blay comes from La Tech but he is likely pretty mature - a senior, who went to Miami. Watson played at Syracuse, but last year he was a freshman. Silver looks like someone who could have helped immediately; he signed with USC.I talked about the DL in another thread but It was a concern when they spent a lot of money on the OL in the portal for 2 guys that probably wouldn't have started for their old teams this year.
The “why didn’t we get a top tier DL out of portal” crowd is hilarious. Yeah, if it was that easy….These are the top ten DL available in the portal this past go around per On 3. My point is: it isn't that we chose OL at the expense of DL. It is probably more likely we couldn't find anyone who fit the need and our culture who wanted to come. We needed OT just as badly or worse and we tried. We had several visit. Pritchett was regarded to be one of the better ones available.

Hopefully they learn how to tamper better because it looks like they will be back in the market for OTs, DTs, and RBs again this off season. These are the top ten DL available in the portal this past go around per On 3. Unless we are hoping to overpay for backups at OT or DT I believe they would have the same lack of portal success this year. That being said, let's wait and see where we are in November before deciding on what we even need. Two-thirds of the season is left, and we have a young team. Hell, Gottula is only a sophomore.Hopefully they learn how to tamper better because it looks like they will be back in the market for OTs, DTs, and RBs again this off season.
What P2 level OT or DT is on the roster right now for next year?Unless we are hoping to overpay for backups at OT or DT I believe they would have the same lack of portal success this year. For DL there might be a better chance we could flip a 2026 early enrollee who is good enough to contribute as a freshman than get anyone able to be a difference maker from the portal.
I am not sure I can answer that with specifics (no evidence due to the developmental time), but I am sure they believe they have the candidates or they would have built the room differently (taken more older guys). What P2 level OT or DT is on the roster right now for next year?
Yes there are a few promising players but what I'm saying is they are still going to have to go back to the portal and find a few players to bridge the gap or fill in for misses on the recruiting trail.I am not sure I can answer that with specifics (no evidence due to the developmental time), but I am sure they believe they have the candidates or they would have built the room differently (taken more older guys).
On the OL we have a lot of guys who have little playing experience but who will be entering their second, third or 4th years in the program, so it's hard to know from my spot who it is that emerges. But this is how it is in the P2 - very few OL guys get much PT until they are in the program 2-3 years. We'll have guys like Sledge, Maciejczak, Hammerbeck, Pyle, Taumau, Brix.
On the DL, that is less clear, I admit. At NT Tyson Terry is the only guy we seem to have currently who could be a starter. At DT/DE, I would guess they expect Simpson, Pietrzak, Nwaneri (all freshman this year in eligibility) and Davis and VanPoppel (both sophs this year) to be mainstays.
The scarcity of game changing NTs is likely one of the reasons they have gone the NFL route of "stop the pass first".
In short, though, I think we have some good young players who are likely to develop on the OL and DL. We clearly need to get 1-2 high level OT and 1 high-level NT recruits by the 2027 class
Next year at OT there is still Gottula, Pritchett and Knaak .
